I'm so glad I tried my hand at this layering with masks. The trick for me was to think from the top down, or to work backwards from how I usually put a card together.
I stamped the orange greeting first, masked with a punch, and sponged around the edge. Then, I wheeled the gourds across the center of the card front, masked with a torn strip, and sponged. Finally, I stamped the flourish image and then sponged a bit around the edges of the card.
If I had thought of it, I would have masked the outer edges of the card base before stamping the "background" flourish. Oh, well, there is always another day! I think I will CASE myself for some Thanksgiving cards I'll be making soon.
