The journaling reads, "Unrequited Love Back in the late 1920's my grandma was seriously courted by one Clarence VanGuilder. In 1931 though, she instead married my grandpa, Harlen Gerrish. As Grandma was moving into supportive living facility in 2005, we were sorting out all her belongings. That is when I first ran across these letters from Clarence. I was amazed at the passion expressed in these letters! Also surprised that all these years, and two husbands later, she still had the letters and also his pictures! She wrote to him one time, but his letters kept coming. The last one that Grandma knew of came after she was married. She never opened it. Grandpa Harlen found it and Lawrence Young burned it in the fireplace. Grandma doesn't know what happened to him after the letters stopped, but thinks that he went to seminary in Chicago and eventually did marry someone else. All the pictures are of Clarence. The 'filmstrip' on the left page is from his junior year in high school, 1926. The one on the right page is from his senior year, 1927. It also says 'DHS' on the back of the pictures. This stands for Darlington (IN) High School. The back of the picture with the three children says, 'children of Loudella VanGuilder. Ole R, Clarence, Fred'."
The letters on the page are scans of the original letters which are attached to the journaling tab, "Stories of Old." The journaling is written behind this tab. The envelope is the actual one that one of the letters came in.
