WT802 ~ What's Your Type ~ {07/23/20}
Hello, happy Thursday! It's me, Sabrina, here as your hostess this week. I had a quick look at what happened on this day in history, and when I saw that it was the anniversary of William Austin Burt patenting America's first typographer (typewriter) I knew I had my theme. Then I looked Burt up - my, he was quite some man. He only had 6 weeks formal classroom schooling, being mostly home-schooled by a neighbour. He started out building sawmills, but his main career was in surveying - and inventing. As well as the "typographer", he invented a solar compass which wouldn't be influenced by magnetic fields, as when he as surveying near what turned out to be the Marquette Iron Range in MI, he was having a lot of problems with a regular compass. Here's a picture of his typographer: (By clbinelli - originally posted to Flickr as W A Burt typographer, CC BY 2.0,)
One of his great grandsons built a working model of the typographer for the 1893 Chicago's World's Fair working from a parchment copy of the original patent.
It's well worth looking him up! But it's his typewriter we're focussing on today. Use a typewriter image on your cards. If you like downloading fonts, there are some great typewriter fonts available. The one I use is Travelling Typewriter.
If you don't have a typewriter image, do feel free to make a special font the stand-out feature on your card. Fonts too have a fascinating history, and I can highly recommend a book by Simon Garfield called "Just My Type"
Summary - feature a typewriter image and/or typewriter fonts on your card. Back-up plan - feature a special font or fonts as the main feature on your card.
After creating your card for the challenge, upload it with the keyword WT802 and then come back and share a link here - that makes it easy for people to find your card, especially if there are typos in your keyword or gallery sync issues.
Here's a link to our WT802 What's Your Type? gallery
Due to site issues, I'll add my sample in the next post, and just say a blanket thank you to my team members so that I don't have to try to edit this post again . If you're not sure how to add a link, here's how: 1. Open 2 windows or tabs: one for your card in the gallery, and one for this thread 2. In this thread, click on reply and type anything you want to show before the link. 3. Go to your card window. Highlight the address for your card. (It says www. splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showphoto..... and so on) 4. Click EDIT. Click COPY 5. Go back to this thread. Click PASTE.

Mr. Burt was quite the inventor! Thanks for sharing his story. I had a very successful stash shopping expedition. I had no idea I had so many typewriter items. Here's my card, WT802 Here's to William Austin Burt.

I'm not sure if I like it more on the black card base or the red one, so I'll put them both here: https://www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/photo/2996749?&cat=28651 Typing Class 101 by Webster8 - at Splitcoaststampers

I'm amazed at how many people actually had one or more typewriters in their stash! What a wonderful gallery. I'll be along to comment on the more recent uploads after work. I cycle to work these days and really miss the time on the bus commute which was always a great time for catching up in the galleries. I took a quick peek before breakfast and especially loved webster8’s charts and Joanne's mouse!

aztk: Sending a smile
Hello and THANKS for letting me play ( a little late) ! I saw this challenge and remembered i had this typewriter stamp, from years ago.... never used. I had good intentions that day to jump in and get going, but my going got up and left. : ) FINALLY yesterday i got encouraged again and made a few Typewriter version cards, some brighter/cheerier. but this was my favorite version. THANKS for the challenges, and the fun they bring!! Take good care, Sending a smile by aztk at Splitcoaststampers
