WCW010 - White Flowers - August 5, 2020
Date: August 5th, 2020Keyword: WCW010Title: White Flowers Hostess: Kia (kiagc) WCW010 GalleryHello to all. Kia here with you this week, and my challenge is about painting the White Flower. I am using a Daisy as my sample, and video , but of course you are free to use any flower you wish for this challenge. I liked the way Joanne used the colours, only three, for her painting. Often when painting white you will find blues, purples (washed out), pinks, yellows and sienna's. Pick colours that you will like together. I used the same colours as Joanne, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Alizarin Crimson and Cobalt Turquoise from Schmincke. The Cobalt Turquoise from Daniel Smith is quite a bit darker, which I will show below. For those wishing to do a Daisy, I have provided a few below. When I drew mine I made a point of doing just a top row of petals, you may wish to do the same. I don't know why the video will not display, but following is the link. How to Paint a Watercolour White Daisy and Butterfly with Joanne Boon Thomas - YouTube

An interesting video. I went with the way I like to do white flowers...back painting....leaving lots of clean white watercolor paper. Thanks for the challenge. PETUNIAS

I watched the video which actually scared me (sorry, but true) Then watched a few more that had varying techniques that I felt more comfortable utilizing. I'm also not comfortable sketching my own image (yet) give me a year to get used to this okay . . so a lightly stamped image jumpstarted me. Here's my card: A Softer Shade of White

Conundrum - This is what I have been using for the challenges - I'm not sure how much longer some of these pots will last - part of me thinks I should look for something that has a bit more "quality" part of me says stick with the kids stuff - it fits in your limited budget and it's not like I'm ever looking to do this for anything but a few cards - Suggestions?

I am using the Kuretake Gansai Tambi which I like. I think some of the girls are using Daniel Smith which are more expensive, I believe. But, I am sure they are really good. I am thinking of getting some of those...may wait for it to be a Christmas gift.....or may not. Ha Ranger Distress inks are good, too. I use those, also. |

There was some discussion in our first challenge, 6/3, on this subject. Read post 6, 9, and 12. My brushes are not expensive but I am SURE the more expensive ones are great. I use different brushes according to what I am doing and how comfortable they are. On this challenge I used a 6" mostly and did use a 1/2" flat brush for something, don't remember what now. Plus, look online as I am sure there will be great information on brushes.

Hello
I loved this challenge and video- thank you! I bought some Karin Watercolor brushes a few months ago, and decided to give them a go. I did not like the effect straight from the brush, so scribbled them on a glass mat and used a waterbrush. DaisyShelly

Hello
I wanted to add- I took a watercolor class with my mother when she lived with me (she was a fabulous artist), and when buying watercolor paints like Daniel Smith, Holbein, QOR or Windsor Newton- we were only told to buy about 7, and learn to mix to make other colors- they are not cheap and that said, we ended up with about 30 tubes- because my mother could not go into a store without buying something....LOL
I imagine if you chose to do that, you can google palates artists use on You Tube. They all have their favorites and all different depending on what colors they like and what they paint, eg... landscape, flowers, nautical pictures, animals etc......
There is a You Tuber who has videos of various colors and compares them by companies- so you can see visually which one YOU like the best and if you like your paint to granulate, etc..... That site is In Liquid Color. I do not know her personally, but like seeing the colors by different companies, as they are $$$$$

Thanks, Shelly for your information on In Liquid Color site. It has a vast amount of information. Just watched this one about brushes, https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?fr=yhs-arh-001&hsimp=yhs-001&hspart=arh&p=in+liquid+color#id=15&vid=4f1bfe2 1b7081914957ee35aae3eedc4&action=viewOne has to think about the size of images you are watercoloring. If you make A2 cards the images are small, and you probably would want a #4 or #6. Most videos on watercoloring, are using a larger format, so the brushes are larger. Through trial and error, you only need a few good brushes. I have two silver black velvet brushes that are used always. They are made of squirrel hair and hold a large amount of water in them. Many people use the waterbrushes and have great success. Check out the videos when you have time.

I am finally getting to this challenge. Watched Joanne's lovely video and peeked at the gallery. Fabulous work everyone. This is not easy. So now I will head to my table and give this a shot. Since I am on Pacific time, most of you are likely done for the day but I'm still going over here. BBL.

I'd love to say this was fun, but it wasn't. Very challenging, I took an easier way out, still wasn't easy.
