Default Saturday 8/10/13 2PM EST TECH TALK 04 Washi What????

Title: Washi What????
Hostess: Wendy (wendella247)
Keyword: TechVSBN04
Day/Date: Saturday, August 10, 2013
Time: 2pm EST

Although I mostly digiscrap these days, my challenge for you uses a traditional technique! (Digiscrappers can play too!)

Scrapbook trends keep things fresh and fun for us, but can be hard on the pocketbook! Washi tape has been a hot item for a while now and you see it all overon cards, journals, frames, and, of course, scrapbook pages!

As described on the webpage of Crafttestdummies, real Washi Tape comes from Japan, [and] is a paper tape that comes in pretty colors and patterns. It comes on a roll like regular sticky tape, and is often translucent. You can find it in 1/4″ widths up to 2 1/2 inches, and it feels more like masking tape than true paper. Since hitting the crafting world by storm, many major scrapbooking companies have come out with their own versions but they arent all that cheap and the temptation to have a variety of colors and designs can make owning very many rolls cost-prohibitive.

So, why not make our own?!?!! Ive included links to a few sites showing you how to make your own washi-type tapes. Although there are many pages/videos on this subject, I chose these because theyre pretty straightforward. I made my washi-style tape using tissue paper, because it comes closer to being thin and translucent-like real washi tape.

YOUR CHALLENGE is to make 2 or more washi-style tapes and use them on a page. Use whatever you want on your tapeI used white tissue paper, but you could use other colors, or color your white tissue with colored markers. Either way, also add stamps, words, misters or background stamps, etc. The skys the limit! [Digi-scrappers you can use "tape" elements on your page!) Here are the tutorials I chose. Youre welcome to search online for others:

Important: Youll want to use a cleanable, non-stick mat for making these tapes.

Tutorials:
-Using Scor-tape [Note, most 2-sided tapes will work.]:
Make It Monday #35: Custom Stamped Washi Tape - YouTube

-Using Xyron:
Make Your Own Washi Tape with the Xyron | Craft Test Dummies

This last one is long, but has many great ideas that I found informative and interesting:

-Instructions for making washi tape start at 2:15 min. marker:

I remember seeing Washi Tape somewhere in my stash. Maybe with Designer Digital. I'll have to do a search and see what I can find. Right now I've got to go get supper started for when the boys get home right after 6. I'm sure they'll be starved and with only one good leg, it'll probably take me a while to get things done in the kitchen without someone else's help

Here's my page. Sleepover

I found 3 pieces of washi tape in my stash but only this one would have worked and I recolored it first.

TFL!

I have my page done with the washi tape!! It's pretty cool making the tape with some tissue paper from a birthday gift last month. I knew that paper would come in handy!
I will have to wait to post as I hate taking pictures indoors and at night. I just can't get good color or keep the flashback out of my pictures anymore.

What a fun challenge, I had thought of making Washi tape before but had not worked out the mechanics of it, like using tissue paper. And, I found another use for the Scor Tape left from my card making days. The orange border around the page was made with tissue paper (I love designer tissue papers and save as many as I can, now I have another reason to hoard!!) and tape with paper on one side (Score Tape) and sticky on the other. ATG tape might work too if applied by hand. Makes it easier to work with because you don't remove the paper side until you are ready to place the tape.

It's so fun to see how cool Sharon's version of the washi tape turned out! And I'm so glad that Terry found some digi versions of it!

I hope some other gals decide to try making some--it really is easy!

Thanks for playing, ladies!

Well...I can't say I made it but I did recolor it It wasn't a very nice shade to compliment the pictures. The other 2 consisted of a strip of music and a strip of a design that I can't remember what it's called now...didn't go well at all with scouting

There's often a LOT more to creating a cohesive digi page than people might think! Having the know-how to recolor, blend, add depth, etc., etc., etc...can make all the difference!

Omgeee. Just did the washi tape challenge. I loooove this technique. So easy.
I will probably never buy washi tape again. Love that I was able to use stamps and recycle tissue paper. super excited!

I absolutely loved doing this and can't wait to do it again. If my tape was wider, I think it would make a great way to do the title.
Here is Co. Family. Thanks Wendy! I don't know if I will get the 4th one done or not. It is laying out, but have to go to Mom's two more times today. Were there only 4 challenges?

Sharon, sorry I never answered your question, but as you probably know by now, there were only 4 challenges!

I finally got to do this challenge, and it was really fun but a little more challenging than I expected. I picked the Xyron technique, and my tissue paper tended to tear at the edges when I tried to cut it into strips, but I think I'll get better at it with time. Thanks for showing me this new, really cheap way to have all the Washi tape I want!
