Default JUN20VSNG ~Matchbook Notepad~ Friday, Jun 26, 2020 10:00 PM EST

Challenge Title: Smokin' Hot Jazz Matchbook Notepad

Hostess: Sonja (SCS: Dr Sonja)

Keyword: JUN20VSNG

Date: Friday, Jun 26, 2020 10 p.m. EST

I find that whenever I hear the sound of a lonesome saxophone, my mind conjures up the image of a sultry woman in a saucy flapper dress taking a long, slow draw on an ornate cigarette holder. Hot music, humid bar in New Orleans, languid movements, just soaking in the blues. Well, not so many women find smoking glamourous these days, but we can still find utility in the matchbook design.

My challenge is to make a simple, useful matchbook notepad. This nifty item is small enough to tuck into your purse for the times you need to jot a quick note. It is thin enough it can even be mailed in a standard envelope along with your card as a sweet "extra".

You can make up to 3 covers from 1 piece of 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock. One sheet of copy paper or scraps from your "too pretty to throw away" pile will make the inner pages.

Just follow these easy directions and open the thumbnails below for Pictures 1-7 and examples:

For the cover: cut cardstock to 3" x 8 1/2".
Picture 1:  Score at 1/2", 4 1/2", and 4 3/4"
Picture 2:  Mountain fold on each score line

Picture 3:  For the notepad pages, cut 9 pieces rectangles, size 2 3/4" x 3 3/4". I used 9 pieces because that was the maximum I could staple through the cover and sheets without messing up the staples. You might want to experiment with some scrap paper to see how many pages your stapler can handle.

Keep in mind, this can be one sheet of copy paper, light weight paper from your scrap bin, recycled junk mail, used paper bags, wrapping paper, recycled pages that are only printed on one side, just about anything you can write on works. Variety also makes for a fun surprise!

Picture 4:  Once I cut and bundled my pages, I ran them through the sewing machine to perforate the paper.

This is entirely optional, I just thought it would make tearing easier. I used an old, dull needle, no thread, at 8 stitches per inch. If you don't have a sewing machine you could use a paper perforator, a quilt marking tool, even a straight pin will make holes in a pinch. But again, this is optional, the pages are small enough they will tear easily without the perfs. As Ann's grand child said "I don't need the holes-I'm strong!"

Picture 5:  Insert the pages, fold over the bottom and secure with 2 staples

Picture 6:  Decorate the matchbook cover any way you like.
    Front cover: 2  7/8" x 3  1/2"
    Back cover:  2  7/8" x 3  7/8"
    Strip to cover staples:  3/8"  x 2  7/8"

Picture 7:  Completed sample.

Many thanks to the hostesses who made samples! Ann shared this project with her grandchildren and they had a ball. Sharon and Janet made lovely samples. Please leave them some love in the gallery!
