We had so much interest and so many folks reminiscing about great books from childhood or great books they're reading right now that we thought we'd gather ideas from 'both sides of the fence' -- hostesses and players.
No chatter in this thread, but what we would love to see is posts from our SCS sistahs telling us the names of some your favorite books and why you like them! We can always use a good book recommendation.
I was completely enchanted by "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See. I truly could not put it down, it was a great read.
It is set in 19th-century China and is the the story of two lifelong friends. I found it to very captivating, and at times even heart-breaking. It follows these 2 women from childhood through their lives, and it really is filled with history and the story of what women had to endure in China in the 19th century. Very easy to read too.
I have to second Vicki's suggestion, I love Snowflower! One of my favorite books of all time. I recently read another Lisa See book, Peony in Love, which was also very good. It tells the story of a young woman's journey through love and reconciliation, with an interesting twist! I love Lisa's books because you really feel like you are in China and experiencing the culture, landscape and history!
Then you would like the book "Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China" also nonfiction (I read fiction as well, really!). Another fascinating book that takes you through almost 70 years of history in China by telling the life stories of three generations of Chinese women, from the grandmother, who had her feet bound up when she was young, through the Cultural Revolution to modern day.

I have several. First the Harry Potter series...I'm not really into all of that 'magical' stuff normally, but those are so much fun to read! I read them every summer and love them more every year!
OH...and Gone With the Wind is my all-time favorite book EVER! My mother always told me that every southern girl should read it at least once...I think I've read it 6 times now! And to go along with that, I really enjoyed Rhett Butler's People. It was interesting to see the story from Rhett's point of view.
And I agree totally on Memoirs of a Geisha...GREAT read! It's not something I would have though I would enjoy, but I absolutely could not put it down. And the fact that it was written by a man (which I realized after reading it) was really neat to me. He seemed to really BE that woman in the book.

All three are great recommendations and favorites of mine. Read Rhett Butler's People this winter. It was sort of like reading GWTW again but in a different way. If you like to read something light and funny, read the Southern Sister Mysteries from the first one through by Anne George. Those even captivated DH! I also love Sandra Dallas--my all time "sisterhood" themed favorite being "The Persian Pickle Club." Got to read the Snowflower book!

I love the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. The author is a professor of Egyptology as well as a writer. The series is about an English woman who is married to an archaeologist who is digging in Egypt in the early 1900's and her family. This is the time period when all the famous tombs of the pharaohs were discovered, including King Tut's. Some of the characters in the books are real people. The books are mysteries, but I also find them to be very funny.

This has already been discussed in our other thread but some of my most favorite series are: The Outlanders by Diana Gabaldon, The Earth's Children series Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, and Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. I think Morelli and Ranger probably rank right up there with McDreamy.

My all-time favs are the Anne of Green Gables series and The Chronicles of Narnia. Follow those up with anything by Terry Brooks (Shannara, Magic Kingdom and Night of the Word series), Clive Cussler, and Ann McCaffrey's Pern series. Also, almost anything by John Grisham (though "A Time to Kill" was his absolute best.) For non-fiction, I love books that help me grow (currently Martha Peace's "Becoming a Titus 2 Woman" and "The Path of Celtic Prayer") or a great biography or autobiography. In case you haven't guessed, I read a LOT!
Anything by Jane Austen, but I really love Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Mansfield Park.
Anything by Sherrilyn Kenyon/Kinley MacGregor (same person). Vampires and historical romances (respectively) that are fantastic storylines and extremely well-written.
What do I read?
I used to read just about anything I could get my hands on
I have read the Harry Potter series, Outlanders, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, Anne of Green Gables, Wizard of Oz series. Many, many Historical Romance Novels and a few mysteries.

She has me currently hooked on 3 monthly series put out by Guide Posts and now she says there is a 4th one coming out. Each month a book comes out written by a different author but continuing the story line. They are really interesting and quick reads.
Mysteries of Sparrow Island
Tales From Grace Chapel Inn
Mystery & the Minister's Wife

Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George is a good read too!
I've read most of the other suggestions as well but look forward to starting Snowflower this summer! This is a wonderful idea! Another good author is Jodi Picoult...Just finished "Nineteen Minutes" WONDERFUL gets you really thinking. Her book "My sister's Keeper" was very good too!
Margaret George has a great book on Henry VIII, I think it is called the Autobiography of Henry VIII, makes a good read and its really long, you can really sink your teeth into it.
I am also reading all the Karen Kingsbury series. I finished the Redemption Series and the Firstborn Series and currently working my way through the Sunrise Series. I have seven more series to work through.
Robyn,
I read Karen KIngsbury several years ago - I think I read everyone I could find - but I have forgotten which ones I read and now she has a bunch more. I also read Beverly Lewis at that time - good reads as well.

wow...a lot of great suggestions! Thank you ladies! I'm fond of reading fiction suspense and mysteries. Some good authors that I enjoy are Tami Hoag, Iris Johansen, Kay Hooper, Lisa Gardner, Thomas Harris, and James Patterson. A big fave of mine also is Sidney Sheldon...great books!
Paula. I have read almost all of Beverly Lewis and then started on Karen Kingsbury. I read them, then my Mom reads them, then we send them to my sister who reads them and passes them on.

I highly recommend anything by Jodi Picoult. Her latest book is Change of Heart (which is excellent, by the way). She writes a lot of things about social issues and when you start the book, you think you know where you stand...but after meeting the characters, you might change your mind. She's phenomenal!

Sounds like you read them in the same order I did - of course, it has been several years, so I might just have to go by the library and pick them up again.

Paula M., I love reading Fern Michael's. I too, have read the Texas,Vegas, and Kentucky series and loved them. OMG, the Sisterhood series are so good. I just finished "Hokus Pokus" . I really like this series too. She can't write the quick enough for me.
I also read Harry Potter, etc. Nora Roberts/ JD Robb is another of my favs. Kay Hooper.
Can you tell I like to read? I keep a list at our Library of books to pick up every other week or so. Depends how much time I have to read in addition to my stamping and scrap-booking.
I love this thread. Making a list of books to read.
My all time favorite book is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. It is a little dark for some people, but I read it every couple of years and it always touches me.

I haven't seen anyone mention anything by Phillipa Gregory... The Other Boleyn Girl, The Virgin Queen, The Boleyn Inheritance, The Constant Princess. I absolutely LOVE these books. Very good reads. Also, someone mentioned some sci fi books early, but Robert Jordan wasn't mentioned. His Wheel of Time series is awesome!
Last, but not least, as I search for my spiritual beliefs, I'm currently reading the Bible. The stories in that are relative to today.
Lots of great books ladies. I'm off to check out a Lisa See book!:p

Jan Austen's - EMMA

If you like LM Montgomery, read The Blue Castle by her. She is so wonderful, but the Anne of Green Gables series gets all the talk--oh, and the Emily of New Moon series is wonderful as well. If you like fantasy, The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is absolutely wonderful, and grab anything by Juliette Marillier. Sunshine is a great read by Robin McKinley-- vampires and chocolate, wonderful!!

OMG! I just finished reading Stephenie Meyer's (sp?) book, Twilight. I LOVED it! I am not usually into that kind of book, but my friend, Michelle, loaned it to me and said I HAD to read it. So, I took a chance and was pleasantly surprised. Hmmmm...she has loaned out the next two books to another one of our friends...maybe I'll just have to go and buy my own copies. I'm not sure I can wait to see what happens next!

Me too! That was one of my fav books!!! Loved it.
I've been reading some of Peter Godwin's books.....Mukiwa and Crocodile in the Sun. Peter grew up in Zimbabwe Africa and Mukiwa is about his boyhood there. Croc in the Sun is about the current mess of a situation in Zimbabwe. I love books about other cultures and their histories and find his books wonderful. I lived in Zim for a year and a few summers here and there so have a special place in my heart for that country.
Anyone heard of James Alexander Thom?? He's a writer from Indiana (my state) and his books mostly center around the Native Americans.....Panther in the Sky, Follow the River are two of my favs by him.

I knew we were kindred spirits. I agree with every one of your suggetions! Also the Elizabeth Peters' series that was mentioned -- I even have a pyramid stamp!!!
Amish fiction by Beverly Lewis,
Amish fiction mystery by Karen Harper, just finished "down the bone"
like reading these, as I learn something about the real Amish lifestyle.
Other great reads, have been: A Random Act by Cindi Broaddus-Dr. Phils sister involved in an act of being seriously injured and The Glass Castle by
Janelle Walls

I LOVE Karen Kingsbury but does she have to make me cry in every single book? I think she is a very captivating author and love every book I have read of hers.
I also like anything by Lori Wick. I agree with the GWTW and Jane Austen too though. I sure wish that I had more time to read.
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls is my favorite book of all time! It is about an MSNBC reporter who tells the true story of her life from poverty. The story opens as she is going to a party, and looks out the window of her cab to see her mother picking out of a dumpster...and it takes off from there! Also like I Know this Much is True by Wally Lamb but it is LONG...and The Color Purple was the one book assignment from college that I actually read-all the way through! For lighter fare, my nieces recommend Something Borrowed which I still haven't started.
