NOV10VSNMINI3 ~ FRIDAY, OCT. 15TH ~ 8 PM EST ~ Calming Pastels

2 Attachment(s)
Title: Calming Pastels
Hostess: Greywolf (Val)
Keyword: NOV10VSNMINI3
Day/Date: Friday, October 15th
Time: 8:00pm EST

I am definitely not a sun worshiper - I love clouds! The soft fluffy texture, the cool, muted, pastel colors all make me feel calm and relaxed.

My challenge isMake a card with soft cloud colors (like pale blue, pink, lavender) using pastels or chalks. For an optional treat, (not a requirement) use flower soft (or shredded Styrofoam) somewhere on your card if you have it. VSN challenges are so exciting that I sometimes get tense trying to think of ideas and get cards done in 45 minutes. Make a card that is relaxing to look at but mostly just Have Fun!

Here's a tutorial to make your own faux fluff. (I don't think you should have to count time making this fluff as part of your 45 minutes, and hopefully you did it ahead of time anyway.)

VIEW THE GALLERY FOR THIS CHALLENGE HERE

UPLOADING INSTRUCTIONS:

1. ALL VSN CREATIONS MUST BE UPLOADED BY 10:00 PM EST ON Monday October 18th.
2. You have 45 minutes to complete the challenge.
3. Please remember to put in the correct keyword, NOV10VSNMINI3, when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos.

It is also highly recommended that you post a link to your creation in this chat thread to be sure you layout is seen.

Thank you Libby! I had never tried this technique before. It was fun.

pegmac71 10-15-2010 04:10 PM

Love this technique Val!! You did wonderfully!

texan947 10-15-2010 04:19 PM

I loved playing with the faux flower soft and it is so easy to make. Here is my card: Pastel Penguin

What a cool tutorial! I'll have to bookmark that one for later. Sorry to be so late to the challenge. We had a bit of a crisis! My four year old bonked her chin on the garden gate and bit her lip! She's all better now, but doesn't want to play outside with Daddy. She's going to watch a cartoon until she feels a bit calmer.

Ohhh, so sorry! I'm glad she's ok.

ravengirl 10-15-2010 04:31 PM

Val, your cards look great! I just noticed the sponged clouds on your first card. What a wonderful detail!

Clownmom 10-15-2010 04:34 PM

I'm keeping up! Here's my card -- Evergreens and Deer.

ETA: Oops, after I uploaded this, I realized I hadn't put any Flower Soft on it. I still had time left on my 45-minute timer, so I added the Flower Soft. I'll change the photo as soon as the glue dries. I hope that still counts!

I used at least 3 colors of chalk for those clouds. If I used any more they were going to turn "muddy!" It took me so long to get comfortable using chalks, but now I tend to get carried away.

smadson 10-15-2010 04:43 PM

Val, what a great challenge! I have my styrafoam all ready! Now I will go see what I can do with it!

I'm coming in at the end of the hour here, but here is what I came up with :)

A bit off our cloud theme, but I think I followed the challenge requirements.

Pastels are for Babies

Traci S. 10-15-2010 04:59 PM

That is SO cute, Toni!

I can't wait to find some styrofoam balls to destroy and color! My husband will never understand why I am buying something to de-construct it, and use it that way! LOL

Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing it!

Hi Val. Thanks for the challenge!

Greywolf 10-15-2010 05:01 PM

Hi Tracy. Good to see you here. I sure enjoy looking at all the cards that the VSN challenges generate.

Val-

Hi Val--

There are 2 pics under your signature. Do you know where you found that 1st bird? My mother is looking for a punch about that size, but a stamp would work also.

Thanks,
Traci S.

Oh so calm... first time watercoloring with pastels - think I'll stick to the crayons.

Hi Tygerpaws11~

What do you mean? Did you wet the brush and apply to pastels? Color with pastels, and then draw it out with a wet brush? I'm just curious, if you don't mind.

Thanks,
Traci S.

Crafty Math Chick 10-15-2010 05:09 PM

Way to go Val - look at you, hostessing your own challenge and all - WOO HOO! I haven't used my chalks in ages. Thanks for the incentive. :)

The chubby bird on the No.1 card is from the Stampin' Up set "Wings of Friendship." He is a cutie, isn't he?

Greywolf 10-15-2010 05:12 PM

Meredith! So good to see you here. Yeah, "I've come a long way, baby." But you should have seen me just as it was time to upload my challenge. I was in a panic.

Traci S. 10-15-2010 05:18 PM

????

Hi Everyone~

I have a question. If I were to use a tree stamp on an "emboss it" clear pad...could I use regular snow glitter on it? Will it stick, or do I melt it with a heat gun? (If it melts.) Or, do you have to use embossing powder?

If it is a stupid question...then I hope everyone had a good laugh...it's great to break the "time" stress!

I appreciate any help...thanks!
Traci S.

Always nice to see a CAS card that is still pretty. Something you can make in a hurry that doesn't look like you did. :-)

2manycookbooks 10-15-2010 05:41 PM

love your samples! Great challenge. I haven't used my chalks in 2 years! It will be good to get away from my copics for a change.

smadson 10-15-2010 05:44 PM

Val, I don't know if I was very successful! I hope it is what you had in mind! Thank you for hostessing! Here is my VSN Sunshine.

Thank you
Sharon

Greywolf 10-15-2010 05:44 PM

Dawn,
Yeah, but I love my Copics too! I used them on Libby's challenge #2.

TrishG 10-15-2010 07:54 PM

Val, thanks for this great challenge! It was fun to bring out the pastels, and also a stamp set I haven't used for a while.
I hope the black in my card doesn't take away from the pastel/calm look.

Hi Val,

It took me 20 minutes to find my chalks under a bunch of other stuff, but I did it! Thanks. They really give such a pretty soft look and I am going to use them again before they get buried. I forgot how much fun they were to use.

Here you go.

vikkijo 10-16-2010 03:36 PM

Nope

Went to town to meet my sister. It's 20 miles, I was trying to hurry! Boy she had bad timing! LOL

beautiful samples & fun challenge! i can't wait to check out the gallery & leave some love!

saffivort 10-17-2010 11:25 AM

I used the popping pastels technique on my background papers and pastels on the edges of the flowers, although you can't tell in the photos. My colours are kind of "pastel-y"

Fun challenge Val. I so rarely think to drag out the chalks, but I do love the muted look they provide. I used it on snowflakes.
