Challenge Title: Sliding Into Your Staycation
Hostess: cnsteele (Nicole)
Keyword: JUL18VSNJ
Date: Saturday, July 14, 2018 4:00PM EST

My husband and I and our youngest daughter are having a staycation this summer while our two older daughters take an overseas trip with their grandparents. We told A to make a list of all she wanted to do, see, and experience during her time as an only child. Some of the things on her list are:
  • seeing a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game
  • having a milkshake at The Milkshake Factory
  • taking a Ducky Tour
  • going miniature golfing
  • visiting a new-to-us ice cream shop
  • spending a day at Sandcastle, Pittsburgh's water park
To commemorate our excitement over Sandcastle's 15 water slides (we've never been!), my challenge to you is to make a slider card. SCS has a tutorial here: Slider Card Tutorial - Splitcoaststampers

***BONUS (optional)! A few weeks after A made her list, I happened to win five tickets to Sandcastle from a local radio station. I was dying to share my excitement but everyone in my family was napping (it was a Sunday afternoon ;-)). So an extra challenge is to use bright, LOUD colors that would wake up my dozing family!***

Fancy cuts and folds are tricky for me, but I am going to Do This!!

cnsteele 07-14-2018 12:04 PM

You can do it, Kim! Watch the video, though. When I first made a slider card, there was no video and it took me awhile to figure it out. The video now available makes it crystal clear.

I used a thin grocery bag and it worked fine. I can't wait to send it to one of our sponsor kids. They love getting interactive cards and there is no shortage of ideas on this site.

Let me make a quick edit: I forgot that not everyone is on the same "plastic bag" standard. Here in California the State has outlawed the thin grocery bags that typically are not reusable (the kind that have holes poked in them by the time you get home just by the corners of cereal boxes) and get tossed after 1 use. We now have lots of sturdy "shopping bag" type plastics that have a thicker gauge.

So, anyway, good to know that any bag will work!

Oh, I hope you didn't think I was being testy! I wasn't and I did not take your statement as anything other than you had not tried a thinner one so you could not speak to how well it would work. I apologize. It is hard to convey tone with just the typing of words!

fl_beachbum 07-14-2018 03:01 PM

well, this was fun. I wasn’t sure I could do a new to me technique in an hour, but there is definitely something to be said for not having time to over think things!

Wow, I enjoy making different kinds of cards, and it's been ages since I made a slider. This time I made it a little differently, just with a pull tab. Thank you for the challenge.

This is a fun slider. I looked for a thick, sturdy plastic bag for the mechanism and it moves easily-like Teflon! I am not sure how it would work with a thin grocery type bag.

I made a slider box once, and the grocery bag strip I used broke! Thankfully, before I gave the recipient the gift! :P I found that using a strip from a bread bag works wonderfully, especially if there is going to be a lot of pulling. :)

After a little struggle, this card turned out better than I anticipated. Thanks for the challenge!

Me oh MY! What a challenge. I watched some tutorial videos and finally went with it. But it took me 50 minutes to make this card, so I was close to the limit.

I love a good challenge, though... so thank you for challenging me out of my comfort zone, Nicole!

WHEW! I studied many times before attempting. I was too fried to do it on the day. It was fun, however, and definitely has a WOW effect. Here's my Red White and Blue Celebration:

This was quite challenging to get the sliding panels to be visible when they pulled out since I was using prestamped images. Here is my card.
