Default Indonesia - Batik - by lacyquilter - Sat, Dec. 12 - 8 pm EST - DEC15VSNN

Challenge Title: Batik
Hostess: lacyquilter (Melody)
Keyword: DEC15VSNN
Date: Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015

For our next challenge, we are traveling to Indonesia, where batik is the traditional fabric. While I've never been to Indonesia, I've seen many beautiful batik fabrics, since they have become so popular in the quilting community.

"It would be impossible to visit or live in Indonesia and not be exposed to one of the country's most highly developed art forms, batik.

The word batik is thought to be derived from the word 'ambatik' which translated means 'a cloth with little dots'. The suffix 'tik' means little dot, drop, point or to make dots. Batik may also originate from the Javanese word 'tritik' which describes a resist process for dying where the patterns are reserved on the textiles by tying and sewing areas prior to dying, similar to tie dye techniques." (taken from: http://www.expat.or.id/info/batik.html)

A simplified definition of creating batik fabric would be many steps of applying wax and dye to form intricate patterns on tightly woven natural fabrics, such as silk or cotton.

For my challenge, I want you to use a batik technique on your card. Listed below are several tutorials on batik techniques for papercrafting. If you don't have one of the materials listed in a technique, don't be afraid of making a substitution. Or, as an alternative, instead of doing a batik technique, use some actual batik fabric on your card.

LOL My first attempt on this technique resulted in a mess, but may use the result anyway. Stay tuned.
