Default DEC17VSNKIDS ~ Cootie Catchers by tessaduck ~ Saturday, Dec. 9, Noon ET

Challenge Title: Interactive Cootie Catchers
Hostess: tessaduck (Brenda)
Keyword: DEC17VSNKIDS
Date: Saturday, December 9, NOON ET

I remember making fortune telling cootie catchers as a kid! We'd write numbers on the outside, numbers in the middle, and the name of the boy we'd marry under the flaps!

For this challenge, kids and their folks make a cootie catcher, only taking it to another level. I'm encouraging you to use (hopefully stamped) images, that encourage interaction. Mine has holiday symbols inside. Other ideas: promises (doing dishes, walk the dog), treats (candy cane, penny), a relative's name (great grandfather, far away uncle)...

1. ALL VSN CREATIONS MUST BE UPLOADED BY 10 P. M. EST ON Sunday, December 17.
2. You have 1 hour to complete the challenge, unless otherwise noted.....you do not have to count prep time!
3. We have a special gallery for the Game Night VSN.
a) From the "Main Gallery" dropdown list on the first page of the uploader, choose Events and Special Collections.
b) From the Sub-gallery dropdown list, choose Virtual Stamping and Scrapbooking Nights ~ it's the last in the list.
c) From the new sub-gallery dropdown list choose Game Night - it's the very top of the list.
4. Please remember to put in the correct keyword when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos.
5. Please do not combine VSN challenges...but you may combine any other challenges with a VSN challenge!

It is also highly recommended that you post a link to your creation in this chat thread to be sure your layout is seen. THANKS SO MUCH FOR PLAYING ALONG!!!

I figure these are a childhood paper classic. Lots of the ten-year-olds I know have the folds mastered. With my second graders, I had to pre-fold the xeroxed Thanksgiving math squares, just because I had a very serious (25"!) time limit. Here's a photo of one of the kids stamping the surprise images on his second effort (non-holiday) cootie catcher. Judith stamps made it easier for them.

btw, if you don't have a handy grandchild, just make one yourself. There's a kid in each of us!

For the Christmas cootie catchers, my "subjects" ranged in age from preschool to second grade. I held the hand of the preschooler to help her place the stamped images.

Younger kids are sometimes challenged with manipulating the cootie catcher after it's folded. "Open like a mouth. Close. Open like a gate. Close."

They also like to turn it upside down to make treat holders.

Yes. As a kid, I knew them as fortune tellers. I don't know when or why the name changed. Maybe it's a regional thing?

My students called them cootie catchers, and could get in trouble if they were out during class, and/or if they started attacking each other with them. The catchers morphed into voracious monster puppet mouths! "Gotcha!"

I'm not sure what we called them at my school, but I don't think I heard them called Cootie Catchers. And, I never knew how to make them. Well, me and my boys had some fun this morning. They were so excited to do some stamping!
