Default Need help with lining up solid dies

My mom gave me her collection of Paper Trey Ink stamps and dies. They are all the older "solid" dies. I've tried stamping first, then die cutting the image. That didn't work very well, since I couldn't see the image under the die. I could not get it centered correctly.

Then I tried cutting the shape first and then stamping on it. That was somewhat better, but still not awesome. I'm thinking it would be really hard to stamp on a smaller die cut.

Does anyone have a tried and true method for using this type of die and getting it properly aligned? TIA

I have some of these as well and have seen a few tutorials on how to die cut stamped images with them. You can die cut the shape out of solid card stock, so that you have a template cut-out. Then you stamp the image and center the die cut template over the image where you want to cut. You then place the die inside the template, tape the template down with removable tape or washi, and run through your die cutting machine. Does this make sense?
Here is a link to a Catherine Pooler video that shows the technique.

Hope this works for you!

I never knew how to use those dies either until I saw the videos. It's one extra step, but beats trying to stamp on the die cut shape and making a mess!
