Default TLC609 ~ Turkish Map Fold/Exploding Card ~ [10/24/2016]

Happy Monday to you all. Today I am focussing on the INSIDE of our cards with a fun fold for the insert. Earlier this year I was having a pm or email conversation with an SCS friend, and she asked me did I know the fold that was a full sheet of printer/copy paper that went inside a card, and opened out when you opened the card. She said it was something she used to do way back, but had none in her gallery to refer to. Well, I suggested several different pop-up insides but none of them were it...and maybe a month later she sent me a link to one that had popped up in her Pinterest feed. And then I started seeing a few trickle through the gallery, so here we are. Since it's obviously not new, it was a toss-up whether to feature it as an Everything Old is New Again challenge, LOL.

This is most easily done with a square piece of paper, as per the video I have embedded, which is really easy to follow. The second half of the video is decorating the card, you'll get all the technical know-how in the first half. I did find shorter videos but this one is clear and well-explained, so I thought it best to use this one. I have also seen regular sized cards with the square insert centred in them, if you prefer not to make a square card.

It can also be done with a rectangular sheet. I have done step-out photos for this and I am attaching them in a pdf and also linking to a Google doc. But unless you are familiar with origami folds, start with the square as it's much easier and doesn't require any measuring or calculating beyond cutting your square to your chosen size. . Essentially this is a traditional origami water-bomb or balloon base with a couple more folds.

So - watch at least the first half of the video, and try a practice fold with blank printer/copy paper - you don't need heavy paper for this.
Then take another piece of printer/copy paper in your chosen size, stamp and decorate it and fold away again with more confidence.

Google Doc with instructions for using a rectangular sheet of paper (any size)

Here's a link to our TLC609 Turkish Map Fold/Exploding Card gallery.

Remember to use the keyword TLC609 when you are uploading. It's helpful (to the hostesses for sure!) if you come back and leave a link on this thread .

If you're not sure how to link your card on the thread here, here's how:

1. Open 2 windows or tabs: one window for your card and one for this thread.
2. In this thread, click on reply and type anything you want to show before the link.
3. Go to your card window. Highlight the address for your card. (It says www. splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showphoto..... and so on)
4. Click EDIT. Click COPY
5. Go back to this thread. Click PASTE.

Thanks for the challenge Sabrina !
I love folded cards and know this type of fold with another name:"Wacky-Squash Fold"
I found a tutorial from 2012 by Debbie Henderson:
Debbie's Designs: Wednesday Wacky-Squash Fold Card!
Here are some cards I made:
one with a classic form:
CC565 Valentine bears by niki1 - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers
and one using a die cut on the outside:
CC516 Someone is carrying a little heart by niki1 - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers
Now I am off to see if I can make one for today's challenge...

This type of card is so much fun, my kids did this in art class when they were younger! They made smaller versions of it, 3 x 3!

Too much cleaning to do after having my grandchildren for the weekend! Will get to this later in the week!

Thank you Sabrina for a wonderful challenge!

Fun technique Sabrina. I followed the video and she gave a very clear presentation.
I don't usually do fancy folds, so I was concentrating more on the folding than how to decorate the interior, but I will try another one sometime soon and put more thought into that.

Well, I do do fancy folds and it still usually takes me at least two if not three runs before I have a good idea of how to make good use of the way the fold works! Glad you enjoyed it.
