TLC30 - please join us!
This week's challenge is Cut Out cards. Jami suggested this challenge to me a while back, and I thought they were really neat! Thanks so much to Jami for suggesting this, and to HappyHeart for sharing the technique!
Here are a few to show you what a Cut Out card is...
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
HappyHeart originally posted directions a while back, and here are her directions.....
I cut a piece of CS 5" x 3 1/2" and stamp my image on it, kind of visualizing where the rectangle will be. I've also used a light table. I
lightly traced a rectangle on the back side of the CS, then stamped my image on the right side. The light table makes it easy to put the image where you want it. The next step is to cut along the lines of the rectangle with an Xacto knife, making sure not to cut where your image is. (Don't do this on your light table unless it has a glass diffuser!) Then use scissors to finish cutting around the image. I sometimes use a second layer, cut just slightly larger and with a slightly smaller rectangle cut out of the middle. (This is only neccessary if your image has a lot of delicate cut-outs, like the arms on my snowman card.) I then stamp the background that will show through the opening (either on the card itself or on a piece of CS a bit larger than the opening), put strips of excess rubber (you could also use mounting tape) along the edges and wherever a piece is needed for stability. Carefully remove the thin rubber backing and line up the front over the background. I use thin ribbon and glue it around the foam mounts so they don't show from the sides, but it's not really neccessary.
HappyHeart's original post is here.....You can find more examples in this thread.
Forums at Splitcoaststampers
Another way to do this (without a light box) would be to LIGHTLY draw with a pencil the rectangle ON THE FRONT of the card. Stamp as desired, overlapping the stamped images over the edges of the inner rectangle. Then use an x-acto knife and a ruler to cut the inner rectangle and scissors for the stamped images. Be sure to cut just a hair outside the pencil line so that no pencil marks remains on your stamped layer. Then continue as above to finish the card.
I have also found that a metal ruler works far better for me with an x-acto blade than a plastic one. With the plastic ruler, I am always slicing off part of the ruler! LOL.
When you upload, please put TLC30 in the keyword section when you upload, and then post a link to your card here in this thread.
If you need help uploading or posting a link to this thread, check out this link:

If you are new to the challenges, please feel free to do this one or ANY of the challenges at any time. There is no time limit. They are not races to see who can do one first, nor are they contests of any sort. All the challenges are simply to provide inspiration and to get us STAMPIN' !!

Just checking in on the challenge before I'm off to work. Guess I pretty much have to participate in this one since I suggested it, huh? LOL! I'm also way behind on challenges. Better get my stamp room cleaned up so I can stamp later this week. Thanks Beth!

I didn't have the directions in front of me when I made this so I am not sure I did it correctly, but I tried...

Beth, This is a great challenge. I had never tried this technique before and I really enjoyed it. I now have lots of ideas rolling around in my head to try. Thanks for the great challenges each week and for the encouragement to try new things.
The site has had uploading issues tonight but I finally got this on. It is not approved at this time...10:34 EST

I spotted a couple cutaways in today's gallery and got so excited! Silly! but I have loved HappyHeart's stuff for so long. I tracked down the challenge and have found so many other beautiful cards and even HappyHeart's directions! kind of an 'Aha' moment reading about the light table... anyways, I'm away from my normal computer, so I'm not able to post right now, but I made this for a sketch challenge months ago and thought I'd share it... not deep cutaways but another look...ironically inspired by HappyHeart because I saw her name below the challenge and something melded in my brain LOL... I also put TL30 in my keywords for another I did~ now I'm off to cutaway something with butterflies and another with leaves for fall~ thanks for the inspiration!

Ok, everyone seems to think this is fun except me. I had a hard time on this one. I hadn't done one of these before and my Xacto knife drove me crazy.

This is my first ever 'Cut Out' card. The cloud background is a 'hot card' made for a Technique challenge many weeks back - I knew it would come in handy sometime!
This card took me 2 evenings! A long time even for me. I was quite pleased with the end result. It was fun and Beth does get me trying things I'd never normally do. Thanks Beth.

Well.... I was able to sqeeze in some stamping time yesterday and this morning, and this challenge looked fun. I made this for dh's b-day next week. (He'll look at it, smile... say "cute".... and I'll get it back for my 'recycle stash'!
(image pending approval as of Thurs. 9:30pm EST)

Now I will 'allow' myself to look at everyone else's cards for this challenge. I usually wait.... although, I did see some REALLy cute ones in the gallery Wed. morning before I realized they were for one of the weekly challenges.
