TLC173 - With a Shimmer and a Glimmer
Want to add a hint of a glimmer or a shimmer to your art? It’s easy to make your own “shimmer spray” or “glimmer spray”. Depending on the ink color you use for the base, it can either be used as an accent or as a coloring agent for your cardstock.

It is dastardly hard to capture the fabulous effects of this technique on film, so you will have to try it yourself!

My samples:

To make the spray, get a small spray bottle (such as a Mini Mister from Ranger or a sample size or travel size spray bottle). Add to it:
1/4 teaspoon Perfect Pearls
1 ounce water
reinker - depends on how dark you want it. About 10 drops is a good place to start.

Shake well and spray on your project. Of course, how close you are to the project when you spray will determine the amount of coverage and wetness. Experiment to get the idea and recognize that you will never get exactly the same effects twice. You do not have to measure the ingredients exactly...I used the tip of my scissors as a spoon. Whatever Perfect Pearls I could scoop up with tip of the scissors was the amount I used. A popsicle stick works well too as a spoon/scoop.

It is important to use Perfect Pearls and NOT Pearl-Ex. Perfect Pearls has a binding agent in it and it will “stick” to your project. Pearl-Ex will fall off your project after the water dries unless you use the alternate recipe…..

Alternate method:
Get a travel size bottle of Hair Spray and add Pearl-Ex and reinker to it. Shake well and you are good to go.

Some combinations to try:
A light yellow re-inker with gold or bronze Perfect Pearls
A green re-inker with gold PP
Burgandy re-inker with gold PP

Be sure to share your recipe when you upload! Keyword: TLC173

And check out the NEW LOOK FOR THE GALLERY! It is awesome!

Thanks Beth! Can you do this without perfect pearls? Hey!! I'm first. LOL

papermoon04 06-16-2008 05:53 AM

Oh! I do this all the time, thanks Beth!

papermoon04 06-16-2008 05:54 AM

You can also use rubbing alcohol w/ Pearl Ex in place of the hair spray.

BevMom 06-16-2008 05:56 AM

Thanks Shelly! :) Kinda sad I don't have Perfect Pearls or Pearl Ex so...no playing for me today.
Can't wait to see what you all come up with!

RTJmom 06-16-2008 05:58 AM

Darn! No perfect pearls. Will have to wait until next week!

bambi64 06-16-2008 05:58 AM

I've done this before with pearl ex and hairspray. Never thought to add reinker to it. Great challenge, Beth, hope to get to it shortly.

I"ll be viewing from the side lines! Or maybe I"ll dig out my twinlking H2Os....

naturecoastcrafter 06-16-2008 05:59 AM

icensheba 06-16-2008 06:00 AM

I'veBeenStamped! 06-16-2008 06:01 AM

Perfect! I was just thinking about buying some of this glitter spray at the store the other day! Looking forward to trying it! Thanks for the idea for the alcohol Shelly! TTFN!

auntynanny 06-16-2008 06:02 AM

Looks great. I have Pearl Ex but have not heard of Perfect Pearls....any idea where I find this.

bensarmom 06-16-2008 06:02 AM

no pearls here either....guess I'll catch up on last weeks challenges.

CAKath 06-16-2008 06:05 AM

I love this look and often use it with simple cards to add a little pizazz. I'm definitely in today. Thanks for the shimmery challenge!

MariLynn 06-16-2008 06:06 AM

I'm in the same boat as several of the other ladies. No supplies so I'll just have to view all the creations.

StampingQueenJAR 06-16-2008 06:09 AM

What a fun technique! I have Pearl Ex and alcohol!

chrisations.ink 06-16-2008 06:11 AM

No PP or PE in my supplies either, but I'll be commenting!!! Question: Once you mix up the recipe can you keep it in the spray bottle or do you need to discard the excess (ie does it gum up etc.?) thanks!

RobinRingtail 06-16-2008 06:13 AM

I don't have the perfect pearls or pearl ex product can we use an alternative method to create shimmer?

imastampin 06-16-2008 06:14 AM

I don't have any perfect pearls either. Hmmmm. I'll see if I can try the pearl ex hairspray combo. IF I can find it. lol Thanks Beth!

mrsparker 06-16-2008 06:14 AM

I don't have Pearl-Ex or perfect pearls, but I am going to sub in for glimmer mist- it's my first day of summer break, and darn it- I will play!!!!

Here is what I came up with, and you are right, it's hard to see the effect! Even the little prima has some shimmer IRL.

BadSherry 06-16-2008 06:18 AM

Dang Beth, great challenge and gorgeous samples! I CAN do this!!!!! Need to run some errands first though!

Tami Mayberry 06-16-2008 06:19 AM

I saw this technique at the stamp show earlier this month. Beautiful results! So beautiful I ended up buying the supplies for it...and now I have a gentle push to get it done ;) Thanks for the challenge!

star 06-16-2008 06:19 AM

oOOOO!!!! I actually bought some glimmer mist wanting to play with it.....no excuses now!! (but sadly, first comes the taxi driver who must take the child to piano lessons, then out for a donut (reward))

justcrazy 06-16-2008 06:24 AM

Awwww no supplies here either! I be checking out what everyone else does tho!!!!

Vicky Gould 06-16-2008 06:25 AM

How interesting - I do have Pearl-Ex and will have to give it a try - something new - thanks, Beth!

Stamps'nCoffee 06-16-2008 06:29 AM

I'll have to add Perfect Pearls to my must-have list...this will be fun to try...for today though...I'll be admiring everyone else's!!!

scrapperLinsey 06-16-2008 06:32 AM

I don't have any of that schtuff and I wanna play! *throwing fit* Maybe I can slide by with some shimmery metallic rub-ons, yes?

Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!! :)

TreasureOiler 06-16-2008 06:35 AM

OK so I can do this....i have an empty little bottle, rubbing alcohol, pearl ex and re-inkers!

Yah! sounds fun!

thanks Shelly for the tip on rubbing alcohol ;)

pammyrn 06-16-2008 06:35 AM

This looks like it could really be fun to try. Now off to find my Perfect Pearls, That will be my challenge for the day.

nvscrapmom 06-16-2008 06:39 AM

I only have 3 Perfect Pearls colors and 2 reinkers, but I think I have came up with the color mixture that will work. This is a great challenge, I found a card from the featured stamper challenge yesterday that I wanted to try and this will work perfect for it. Thanks for the great idea.

StampNScrapliss 06-16-2008 06:41 AM

Ok so I don't hjave perfect pearls...what are they and where can I find them...I want to play this one too

JoAnn's carries the Perfect Pearls as does Hobby Lobby.

jdmommy 06-16-2008 06:56 AM

Here is mine

Beth, this was fun!! I'll do this again (I may even buy some PP!)

papermoon04 06-16-2008 06:59 AM

Here's mine, racing out the door after a really quick card. I'll be back to comment later!

Damask Grape Shimmer

blessingsX3 06-16-2008 07:00 AM

I used glimmer mist which I have never used before so this pushed me to try it. I hope it is ok that I used my mist rather than making it. I figure I had it so I should use it rather than making more when I never used this one. Anyway, here is mine:

shimmery cat

stampininthesun 06-16-2008 07:01 AM

Hmm..I really wanted to play today (my first time) but I gave my PP and Pe's away!!!
I'll have to see what I can come up with!

tay0479 06-16-2008 07:11 AM

Since I don't know what perfect pearls are I don't think I have any and will have to pass on this challenge. Are they the same as Pearlx Powder?

I went back and saw the alternate recipe. Now I don't have hairspray.

SanJoseLady 06-16-2008 07:16 AM

I love this place....wow. Can't WAIT to get home from work and try this.
