I don't recall mine smelling. I'm not sure right now, because I'm out. But my friend got the pink ATG for Hannukah, and hers definitely has an odor. And it is the Scotch Gold, because it has that black/gold plaid wrapper around the tape.
Yes, I posted about this in another thread. The tape that came with my pink ATG, and the other refills I have bought for it, have a very moldy smell. Only one or two other people said that theirs smelled, but mine definitely does. The off-brand I buy is fine.
I order mine from framing supplies also; have the gold and the regular and I've never noticed a smell with either. Also have some of the tape depot - no smell...

Just to clarify, I'm talking about the tape that comes in the refill boxes (the ones that come with the pink ATG). I bought a refill box too when I bought my ATG, and all of that tape smells moldy as well. I've never bought the other Scotch brand ATG refills, so I don't know about those.
I ordrer from there too, gold box, and it has a chemical smell. It goes away after a while. My ATG is 5years old and as lon as I can remember the refills have always had that aroma.
You know, maybe it's just our noses. My friend has asthma and allergies, and I have a constantly stuffy nose. It's not uncommon for me to not smell anything. And when I get my tape, it's usually a month before I need any of the tape, so maybe it's had a chance to air out enough then that I can't smell it? Anyway, I'm about to order more, because my son finished off my last roll on his science fair project!
I actually thought it was just me. I bought my Pink ATG and it put it the car while a ran a few other errands and when I got back in the car the strong chemical smell was unbearable! I ordered the replacement tape from Tape Depot and noticed a small odor, but nothing compared to the 3M gold. Oh well...I'm willing to risk a few fumes for the best tape I've ever used LOL
Hi all. I finally splurged w/a 50% off cpn from Mike's, yesterday. I was so excited to get my ATG as everyone seems to always rave about it. I didn't notice a smell at the store, but my DH loaded it up for me, and I went to use it today, and, YIKES!!!! It smells like someone dumped some REALLY BAD cologne on the thing. UGH! Now my L.O. smells bad. I read here that you guys thought it smelled mouldy. This is definitely not mold but it is terrible, nonetheless. PLEASE tell me that it will go away. I can't imagine my scrapbooks smelling like this. I am seriously debating about taking it back to the store. TIA!!
Cheers,
Stacy

I never use the gold since I don't care about acid free. The gold is stringy and wraps around wheel. I love the red and buy mine from framingsupplies.com. Now that the gold is stinky it's just one more reason for me not to buy the gold.

I find that, if I leave my tape out of the box for about a week, the smell almost disappears. It's definitely much better. Maybe if you leave your layout out of the page protectors, the smell will dissipate.
Thanks, ScrapJanny.
It is pretty BAD!
I seriously thought at first that someone w/ really bad taste in cologne  (not to mention wearing a gallon of it!!!), had messed w/the gun. Then my DH told me that the box was sealed when he opened it, so most likely, no one had messed with it. I hadn't noted a smell prior to his loading it with the tape. I'm glad I came here to poke about. I see that I am not alone. I thought, "If it is not someone's cologne, then why on Earth would 3M make a 'scented' tape?!??!"
UGH!
ANYWAY........I will let it all set out and keep my fingers crossed.
