I have one and I think it looks nice with the direct to paper technique. I find that it doesn't stamp as crisp as I would like it to, no matter how little or how much ink I put on the stamp. For me it works best for subtle things, not a main focal point or phrase. I usually use white embossing powder if I want it crisp.
I recomend the white craft pad...I often use it on dark paper...it does take a while to dry (unless you heat set) It's great with background stamps, and just to use with a sponge to highlight the edges of a card...but look in my gallery, I used it on a red pocket card I made.
Honestly, the trick is to use a MUCH lighter touch than with the dye ink pads. My white pad also came over-inked, which is a problem that has since been resolved as I understand. I LOVE it with itty bitty backgrounds or just for a softer look. I also love the vanilla, especially with the EE and RR colr families for fall and winter. It gives a little warmer feel, and looks SO nice. Don't let the longer drying time scare you, it IS worth it.
For those of you who would like a dye-based white ink pad, consider getting one from The Angel Company. I love theirs. I'd really like to see SU sell a white classic (dye) ink pad.
How opaque are the white TAC and CTMH dye pads? I'm frustrated by the "goopiness" of my SU! craft pad... honestly, I don't care that much for pigment inks in general...
The white dye ink pads will NOT be as vibrant on dark colors as the SU! pad. The reason the white is so goopy is because a very high level of pigment is needed to make it opaque on dark colors. So if you're using the white on pastel, then a dye pad will work fine. But on the RRs...you're gonna need the pigment ink.

Thanks!
My white and vanilla SU! pads are used so frequently!!! I adore them!
However, if yours is goopy, try blotting off excess ink with a paper towel. Mine was that way when I initially received it, but blotting worked and a new love was born! ;)

The white craft pad is one of my best friends. It is sooooo great and I have not found another white pad like it. White is such a volitile color. I bought so many different white pads before my SU one and NONE of them were white.
The above posters are right. Use a light touch. If you think it is too goopy, store it right-side up. It is really worth using a lighter touch to ink and stamp your stamp to have a pad that really stamps white and last forever! I have had mine for 4 years and still have not had to re-ink it. (and I use it like crazy, esp. for DTP).
The SU white pad looks awesome on dark colors. It is the only one that I have found that will show up on dark colors.
It really is worth it! Even with a little longer drying time. I learned to be patient for the great result you get!
It shows up fantastic, before I purchase dit I was using versacolor white and it was really craptastic. I am a huge fan of SU white craft pads... get the reinker too!

Huh, that's a new word! I'll have to use it in the future to describe other substandard products which just don't measure up to our beloved SU!
And I agree with most of the other gal--White craft pad is worth the minor headaches of dealing with it (slow drying, goopiness).

I can only emphasize what has already been said. The White Craft Pad was one of my 1st purchases and it took some time for me to get the right touch with it. You should stamp with half or less the pressure that you might use with dye ink to get a crisp image, but you can definately get one. It was very goopy at first, but the more I have used it, that problem has resolved itself. I haven't found a color that it doesn't look great on. While it is definately the most noticeable on the darker colors, it also looks beautiful on the lighter ones. Try embossing with clear or irredescent ep over it too - looks beautiful!
