Default What kind of camera do you use??

I am looking to buy a new camera, a digital SLR and was really thinking of going Nikon, and then yesterday I got to play with a Cannon, and now I am not sure. so what do you have and what do you like about it?

DH bought me an HP, and I love the giant preview screen thingy on the back. As you can see, I'm not too camera savvy, but you can check my recent gallery pics to see the quality. I think it's pretty good!

I have the older Nikon D70. I love how solid it feels and I really like the picture quality. I find that people in general have loyalties to their Canon/Nikon. I used to have only Canon cameras, but bought a Nikon when I went digital. I have several film cameras that are Canon and Nikon and appreciate different things about each one.

If you're into the specs of the camera, you'll be able to compare the two and decide what's best for your needs. If you are generally a point and shoot photographer I think you should go with what feels most comfortable in your hands....and what your budget allows. Both are quality cameras IMO.

Have fun making your decision!!

Digital Rebel, XTi. Incredible machine! I was also looking at several different high MP cameras, and the Xti sold me on the larger view screen (it's almost 2.5 inches) and the automatic cleaning sensor. Absolutely LOVE it. Here's a great website that might help you compare the different models you're looking at, with many owner reviews as well: Dpreview.com

Good luck deciding!

Since others have mentioned this, I felt I should comment that I have *not* taken any picutres of my cards in my gallery with my camera! Those were taken with my older camera - a Fuji FinePix 3.2 MP. So please don't use those as reference.

I recently got a Nikon 40x. They were having a nice special at Mother's Day. I didn't try the Canon. The man at the camera store preferred Nikons and that's what we had in film so I went with that. I have been very happy with the pictures and enjoy using the camera.

I have the Rebel XTi and love it. The battery lasts forever, the pictures are awesome, and we got a good deal. At Best Buy, the salesman said that Canon processors are far better than Nikon. Nikon lenses are good, but Canon is comparable.

We have taken some awesome photos, and I still don't know how to use most of the features. I love the zoom-in feature on the view-screen. My son has trouble keeping his eyes open during flash shots. Now I able to check that before I lose the opportunity to recreate the shot. I do know some professionals who keep the XTi as a back up. For the price, it is a great camera.

Canon Rebel XTI- I've ended up being team photographer for my daughter's sports teams. It's amazing and so easy to use w/ all the auto settings, yet semi pro if you want to set your own settings. You can peek at my website to see action photos. I have a 70/300 lens too, and if you get that, make sure you get the one with the stabilizer so you don't need a tripod! Amazing!

I just upgraded to a Canon 30D from a Canon Rebel XT. I love them both! I only upgraded because somebody offered to buy my XT from me which left me an option to upgrade for minimal costs.

I have photos in both my photos and blog links in my sig.

I have a Cannon Power shot SD300 digital elph. I love it - it has lots of functions which I seldom use b/c auto works great and I am a point and shoot kind of a girl. Mine is a couple of years old and only 4 megapixels but I have been happy with the quality. The best part though is it is very small. You can put it in your front pants pocket if you need to and even in the case it fits easily in my purse so I can always have it with me.

I have always been a Canon user. The best feature I like about it is that it has the Image Stabilization. But then again, if you are accustomed to Nikon, then get the Nikon. I'm pretty sure both products are good. If it was me though, I make sure to buy the high-end product, so I know it will last me a long long time. Good luck!

WE have the Canon XT and the 30D. Both are awesome in their own ways. Great pictures. We use the XT for more family pictures and the 30D is our professional camera we use for more of our jobs.

I have the Canon Digital Rebel...can't remember which exact model right now. It is 2 years old and I think 10 megapixels. I decided to go with the Canon over the Nikon simply because I had the film version of the Canon Rebel, so I had a couple of lenses that I was able to use on my new digital Rebel. I recently bought a huge lens and have had great results with it. I love my camera!

I have a Nikon D-70...do your research and then go to the store and hold one in your hand and play with it...the holding it in your hands is the important part if you are new to digital SLR's...they say it needs to feel good in your hand. I have monster hands and the Cannon was a little to small for my hands...the Nikon felt great to me...but it is all personal preference.
There are sites on the interent where you can compare features side by side on the screen of the different cameras.

OH!! you can also find the actual user manuals if you search on line as well. I did this and then went through each manual to see which one I thought I could understand and which camera I thought would be easiest for me to use.

Nikon D-70 here, love it and have been using it for 2 years. I bought it refurbished and have not had a problem with it.

Good luck, I remember agonizing over that very decision.

I have had the Kodak easy share. I know it's not as sophisticated as the canon & the nikon. But I have family with both cameras, they hardly use them regularly. They are too heavy & bulky to put around their neck, and aren't easy to use for trips. Mine isn't heavy & I think that is why I use it so much. My 5 year old can also easily use it too.
I also think it has good picture quality & we have blown pictures up too.

That was the first digital I bought, Kodak, I found I would have gone broke on the batteries. That is one reason that I like the SLR's they have the recharable battery pack thing not normal batteries. I am also looking for a good camera with very little or no shuuter delay, I lose so many shots
because my little camera doesn't actually take until the subject has moved, very important when taking pictures of kids!

I don't use my camera every single day, and I don't review a lot of my shots, as that's what drains your battery(ies) faster than anything - using the (p)review screen. However, I've had my XTi since late Feb, and STILL haven't had to recharge the battery!

This is the main reason why I wanted a new camera. We have four kids that NEVER stop, and it is important to me to get those candid shots before they're gone. And the old Fuji just wouldn't cut it. The kicker was our vacation to San Diego/Sea World last fall. I missed so many shots of the live animal shows with that Fuji's lousy shutter delay! The delay on the XTi is practically nonexistant. And even better in sports mode - 3-4 shots per second!

Best of luck deciding!

Thank you, thats my dog Johhnie. He's a goofball and loves to have his photo taken.
I think after reading everything and the fact that I have some Nikon lenses I'm going to have to go with the Nikon myself. But I will take the advise and go to the store and hold both in my hands and see which I feel more comfortable with.

I have read good reviews on both cameras.

I've had a bunch of cameras, different brands. I recently went back to Canon and purchased the XTI. Got a good deal at Best Buy and a warrenty. It really boils down to touching/holding each camera and what you like or don't like. This time I didn't check into any other camera...I went straight for the XTI...my reason though was b/c Canon lenes are interchangable w/cannon cameras...pretty much all of them. I read, heard, been told that other companies are not all like that. Love my XTI btw, takes wonderful pixs, although I'll admit, I'm still learning how to use it!

If you are leaning towards a Nikon go to www.stunningnikon.com/picturetown and check it out. THat is where I fell for the Nikon, and the price helps, it is a few hundred less than cannon.

I don't have an SLR but was a dedicated Olympus user but tried a Nikon a few years back because Consumer Reports loved it. But I didn't. I hated the pictures I took with it and finally asked my dh for one for mother's day. He brought home a Canon and I love it. My pictures have improved dramatically.

Thank you. I checked out the web site.
Im actually looking at the Nikon D80 and comparing that to the Canon Rebel XTi. The Nikon will set me back a few hundred more but I already have a few Nikon lenses so it would be about the same.

Its a good thing I have narrowed this down to 2. I torture myself about this stuff instead of just going with it and buying one.

Thanks for the imput. Its very much appreciated.

I'm curious what those who were deciding between the Nikon D40 and Canon xti decided on? I went into Best Buy today to purchase the Nikon D40 but came out liking the xti, although I don't think I need the 10 mp. Just wondering what you decided to get and what made you go that way.

If you look at camera ratings, the models of Nikon and Canon you are looking at are both top rated. You wouldn't go wrong with either. It really boils down to personal preference at that point.

I recently bought the Nikon D40x because of its smaller size. I have small hands and the next models up felt too heavy to me. And, since I didn't have any older Nikon lenses, that was not an issue. The D40x has the same imaging engine as the D80, so there is really no difference in picture quality.

I've been a Nikon user since 1973 and would never use anything else...we have 4 in the house...but for my cards I use the Nikon D-50...think we bought it last March .
