Watercolor Pencils
Hi, I'm thinking about trying some watercolor pencils with my stamps and was wondering what everyone prefers. This will help me make an educated decision. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I really like the intensity of the Derwent Inktense Pencils and use them for water colouring! They are fairly new to me and I will be buying the largest set in the future The reason I prefer these is that I like bright colours and with some water colour pencils they fade too much or turn chalky and pastel like when you add water to blend them;)
Here is an example of one of the cards I did using the Inktense pencils

I have Faber Castell, Derwent, Michaelangelo and some Dutch ones I can't remember the name. I always want to get the Conte a Paris Aquaralles, but they never had the box of 48 when I could get a discount :-(.

After seeing your card this morning, there was nothing doing for me but to go hunt down the InkTense pencils. Can't wait to get to play with them.

I have the full set of Derwent pencils, and I love them. Inktense is a favorite of mine as well.
I didn't like the Prismacolor watercolor pencils, just for the record, though I love their regular colored pencils!

Kim, I love how vibrant your card is. My question is what paper works best? I am in India, and most of the branded paper (PTI, GinaK, neenah solar white,) isn't available here. I do have Fabriano Watercolor paper. Does it work better on smooth paper or on paper with some tooth?
Thanks so much in advance.

Personally, not a fan. They're generic colors (not necessarily SU colors), and I didn't feel they were worth the $$. But they're older, so maybe they've been improved since I purchased mine.
I love my Reeves Water Soluble Wax Pastels (like crayons)...but I might have to put those Derwent Inktense pencils on my Wish List! Lovely, vibrant color...

I like SU watercolor pencils. They aren't as vibrant as Derwent but they are easy to use. Sometimes you may want a more subtle color. Here is a card I did using SU watercolor pencils. I wish the SU pencils had more color choices.

The SU only has 8 colors and they are generic, as mentioned before. However, I think they work fine--not as intense as the Derwent, but watercolor is supposed to be rather muted IMHO. If I want intense and brilliant, I use my Prismas.

I have the Prismacolor watercolor pencils and the Inktense and my vote is for Inktense. They're great.

I have the Aquarelles and I love them! The colors are very true to what you expect and I find that they blend well. The ones I have are a woodless barrel too, so I feel like you get more pencil for what you pay (part of the reason they're so expensive).
I have always wanted to try the Inktense ones though!

I'm not sure what you mean by "8 colors" they have 24 colors in the set they sell.

I'm on the fence about ordering those myself. Going to a local art store today to see what they have in open stock to add to my collection. May take me longer to get them all, but I WILL HAVE THEM ALL!

the only ones I've used are prismacolored pencils. I think they're fabulous, but not having benefit of using others, I'm not certain I can answer your question.

SU Waterdolor Wonder Crayons are the best in my opinion. And they do match the SU colors. Easier to use than the SU Watercolor Pencils in my estimation. You can color right onto your paper and then pull the color around with your Aquapainter or a Blender Pen. Or you can pick some color up right off the crayon with either of the above and then color on your paper. Also, if you have a solid image stamp, color right onto it with the crayons, mist with water and stamp. All techniques work great!

The SU watercolor crayons come in every color. Each of the four papers collections of 10 colors is $16.95. Haven't tried them yet but plan to.

The poster was asking about watercolor pencils. My SU set has only 8 colors and they are basic generic colors. The crayons may be a different story--I don't have those, so can't speak to them.

If you're just starting out, the Derwent watercolor pencils are inexpensive and decent quality. The colors aren't as bright as their Inktense, but IMO I don't expect super-bright colors with the pencils.
You can get a basic set and add on other colors individually.

I love your card... very pretty. I am a new demo and would like to teach the black magic technique to my club. The set does have more than 8 colors. It actually has 24 for 19.95 which seems reasonable so hopefully the newer set has better options for colors. Thanks for the help

These are nice but it wasn't as easy as some of the posts state. I guess I need practice. They don't work very well for coloring. The aquapainter works better. Can the watercolor crayons be used for the black magic technique? Thanks!

Actually, if you use the pencils direct-to-paper and then blend, you can achieve really intense color with watercolor pencils. The difference with the Inktense line is that the pigment is ink. Once it's blended and it dries, it is permanent. With a watercolor pencil, you can usually do a little additional blending, even after your painted area dries.

Count me in as a fan of the Derwent Inktense pencils.. but I have an old set of Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer that I really like as well. For some reason, I struggle with getting the range of skin colour in the Derwents and will always resort to the Faber-Castell for images/drawings of people.
