For those that have done this, what brand of sticky-stuff (EZ mount, etc.) did you put on it to use with Acrylic blocks? And what size acrylic blocks do I need to buy for these? Thanks,
Darcy
I unmounted two of my wheels so far. Probably do more eventually when I'm sure that I will never want to sell them. Even though for most of my unmounteds I use EZmount, for these I decided that I would go with Aileen's tack-it-over-and-over. You apply it to the back of the rubber, allow it to dry, then you can put the rubber on your acrylic block and it sticks well enough to do your stamping. Take it off, store it and do it all over again (hence the product name). Kind of like a post-it note. If you go this method, you will need to use a thin sheet of craft foam or a magazine under your paper to give it some cushion to get a good impression.
I have a company that I buy acrylic blocks from that will custom make them to any size you want. And the prices of the blocks and shipping are really very reasonable. I told them that there was talk on this board about people unmounting their wheels and needing specialty blocks for those sizes. So maybe they will even start making them on a regular basis. If you are interested in the company info, pm me and I will be glad to forward it to you.
I looked at the block from the link below. Is the 2.5x8 a good fit for the entire stamp? Does anyone have the dimensions of a wheel image flattened out?

I left it as is. I would also go to a winshield or window place and ask if they have some spare pieces of plexiglass. This is what I did and DH cut the large piece in to TONS of blocks for me. I got the left over piece for about $3. If you are looking for a cheap alternative to an acrylic block. It's a bit thinner but stamps just the same.
I have unmounted all my SU wheels and I definitely trimmed them, just like I would trim the stamps in a stamp set. And now I use them WAY more than I used to!
ok...help me. why on earth would you want to unmount your wheels? don't you use them with the ink cartridges, and just wheel away? I'm kind of new to the unmounting idea. I've just unmounted my first set of stamps.

some unmount their wheels to save space...others, so they don't have to worry about buying-storing-replacing the ink cartridges and rollers..for me, all of the above!! I also get a better image than with a roller ;)
since mine are on EZ mount I just have them clinging to the glass in a picture frame that sits by my desk. I can see them, so I use them. So much nicer than when they were wheel.

Some store them in an empty clam shell box from SU...they fit nicely!
This is what I've been doing with all my unmounted sets too. I can get 3 or 4 in each box. For the wheels, I put them on a piece of acetate and I can get a few on each piece and a few layers in each box.

Oops, already told y'all that in this thread. I'm silly.
This is very interesting. What a great idea! Especially for the jumbo wheels, which I have banned - LOL! b/c I have so many of the regular wheels and inks and refuse to invest in all the big inks. I do love some of the jumbo wheels but then I would need ALL new inks. That add$ up! This way I wouldn't! so cool!
I've unmounted all my wheels, and , as has been said by many, I use them much more often now. I also found it easier to color the different elements in the design now that they are flat.
Someone on SCS mentioned that www.beeswaxstamps.com had the best price for cling foam. They charge $2.99 for an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet and charge actual shipping costs. I've ordered from them twice now and have been very happy!

I'm excited! Just ordered my cling cushion and acrylic block for my jumbo wheel stamps! I don't use my wheels AT ALL because I just haven't been able to get a good image. Now I am going to order some new wheels on my next SU order!
...the unmounting of wheels has begun! Gadzooks...you'd think I'd been locked in a closet for years the way I'm stamping now! Laura, if you're the one who came up with this fan-tab-u-lous idea; I thank you!!
I've ordered my EZ Mount and am waiting with baited breath (whatever that means) for it's arrival!
My thanks again for the directions...it's time to unmount and ink-up,
Lynn

i've unmounted a few of mine so far and put them on EZ mount. I store them in extra SU! boxes, and use a 9" (?) block to stamp them. I unmounted them because I rarely ever use them as a wheel (where I want a continuous design, like on wrapping paper) and I didn't want to have to buy cartridges in every color under the sun. Unmounted they're easier to ink, easier to custom color, easier to store, and they get used more often (always a benefit, especially if my DH is taking stock of what I own and use!) ;) HTH!
