I have tried many over the years and my favorite is by Close to My Heart. It's called Versamat and is foamy on one side for stamping and reverses to a hard cuttable surface with a 12x12 grid. Mine is wearing out but it has put up with about three years of very hard use. Well worth the money.

I recently purchased a Dahle mat and really like it. It is a black self healing mat.

I like a thick mouse pad. I also have the scor-pal mat and that is nice too.

I have a very dense foam pad made by Darice specifically for this purpose. It is approx 12" X 18", so you have a lot of space to work on, and about 1/2" thick. Very inexpensive at around $4.00. Love mine and keep it on my desk all the time; that way, I always have a workable space on my desk no matter how cluttered the rest of my desk gets - lol.

Fun foam works great for me! It has the perfect amount of give, plus it's very inexpensive and easy to replace when it gets inky.

Quick hijack: Bonnie, every time I use my Genesis, I think of you! The more I use it, the more I love it. Can't imagine my studio without it now!

I use a mouse pad, too! Takes up way less space and is very effective.

I guess I'm cheap in this area. I just use a piece of craft foam. I buy it by the pack and when it starts getting messy I toss it and use a new sheet. I actually cut the sheets in hakf gecause i neverstamp anything biggertgem A2 size. I stamp on a marble countertop with the basic grey ruled magnetic mat and just keep the foam nest to my work area.

I also use the Darice. They are very inexpensive, especially considering how large they are (about 17 x 11 inches). I've actually bought four of them over time and cut them all in half, so they end up around 8.5 X 11. Now I always have one to pull out for stamping, but I also find that if I am working on a project and have a number of pieces made for it but want to set it aside, these 1/2 mats are great for that. I just put everything that belongs to the project on the mat and I can stack the mats with different projects on top of each other.

Another fun foam user here. I have two pieces that I use. One white and one dark depending on color of cardstock I'm stamping on for contrast.
