Are the Stampin' Write Markers a 'must-have' item?
I keep reading how other stampers say they couldn't live without these markers - I'm looking for lots of ideas that they can be used for before I take the plunge of spending $120. Thanks in advance for your help.
the biggest benefit to me for the markers is selective coloring. I am able to use as many colors as I want on one stamp without masking or restamping anything..just color..huff...stamp!!
I can't stamp without these markers. Best money I've spent with SU! You can selectively ink up a stamp with different markers, color with them, do techniques with acetate paper that is totally cool (see resource page), use them with the spritzer for a blast of speckled color, write with them, touch up spots you missed with a stamp, the list is endless!
I just wish they made them for the In Colors. Hopefully that happens with next years' catty.
I have also heard that you can refill empty blender pens with the in color reinkers to create your own stamp and write marker. I have never tried this myself but I had heard about it.
As a newbie, I got these up front with stampin spots for the 4 color families. I LOVE my markers! I would say buy them first before all the color spots.
This way you can color a stamp with any color ink a sample calls for without owning the actual ink pads. Love them, love them, love them!

Yep, done this. Carefully pull out the big end of the marker, drop in about 25 drops of reinker, then put the tip back in. Add about 3 drops of reinker to each marker tip to get the ink flowing. I did this about 4 months ago, right after the new colors came out, and they still are great, very juicy. I love using my in color markers, although I only had two empty blender pens. Wish I had had 6. I did cranberry crisp and cool caribbean.

BTW, back to the OP's comment, I will be buying these for Christmas, finally after 3 years of stamping! I do have the retired markers that my mom gave me and use them ALL the time..I love having them, and can't wait to get all the colors, although I wish they made the case bigger, to hold all the neutral colors too!

I love mine, and use them more than I thought I would, there are tons of things you can find on this site. Wait till January, add $30 and you will get 3 SABs, and hostess bennies - well worth it!

Thanks for letting us know how you go about it. I can't wait to try it!
Remember too, that you can buy the color families separately. That way you can get your favorite family first, then add the others later. That's my plan, anyway!

Yes, this is an option too. The only reason I decided to buy them together is to get the case to hold all of them in at once. You can buy a seperate case for the markers from here: Zig Marker Case, Fits SU Markers
But I figured for the extra 15.99 plus shipping I could just get all of them together, since I have that option. For those that don't, getting them by color family is a great option. Buy it along with the paper you need for that season, and you would be set!

Honestly, that's what I've been doing and I wish I had jumped right in and gotten them all at once. The best thing is - if you don't have all the colors of ink, you can just use the markers. I use my markers all the time - LOVE them! They are an absolute MUST-HAVE!!

I love my markers! I got one color family to start, then a few here and there. Then as a gift, my sister bought me the full pack! I love them so much, I dont know how I went without all the colors for so long.
Its great having all the colors, and I wish I had gotten that first as a new demo. I would buy them before getting all the ink pad colors!
You could always find 3 others who want them too and do a marker club- 4 months and you all get the full set of markers, paper, hostess bennies, etc... easier to pay for it in 4 monthly payments, KWIM? They are great- love em!
OMG!!!!!! I have been looking for one of those cases for over a year!! Seriously! I have one and I wanted a second one.. I have searched stores and online and couldn't find it... .Finally!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! :O)

I bought mine on ebay for about $70 after shipping. They are the set of "old colors", but I found it was cheaper to go this route and then add whichever of the new colors I wanted (which so far has been none!).
I don't know if I would call them a must have, but I do use them quite a bit and am glad I got them!
I also bought mine on e-bay... I bought them from different people one at a time, or 10-15ish from people who had small groups of them. I ended up getting all the old colors and a bunch extra (because of duplicates in the lots) which in turn I sold on e-bay seperatly. In the end I paid about $30 for all the old colors... then I just bought the newer colors from the catalog.
I absolutely love SU's markers. To make it a little more economical (although, it will cost more $ in the long run) I buy a matching marker every time I buy a stamp pad.
When I discovered that quite a few of my LePlume markers were dried up or funky, I decided to take the plunge last year and bought the Stampin' Up marker set AND all of the spots. I've never regretted this.
I only wish that the marker set came with a black marker. It just seems so weird to have to buy that separately. (Which finally I just did.. Thanks Deb!)

I honestly didn't think that they would be worth it either-boy was I wrong! I love them. On those lazy days, I don't even get my stamp pads out- I can do it all with markers! Expensive, but well worth it!
You can buy them in the color families you use the most....then you don't have to spend the whole amount at one time.....you can get them as you want.....makes it seem a little cheaper!

I looked at the ZIG marker case .... looks like the markers are held vertically --- up and down (at least it looks like the holes are right under the handle).
If someone has one of those Zig cases, maybe she can confirm how they're held.
The SU marker case holds the markers horizontally which is the way they're supposed to be stored.

All you'd have to do is set the ZIG case on its side when not in use and the markers would then be stored horizontally. ;)

I love the markers, especially when my DH and I take trips where I am stuck in the hotel room. Taking all of my stamp pads is a bit much, so I take a Basic Black stamp pad and instead of every stamp pad in the 48 color pallet, I take my awesome little tote of MARKERS. YEY!!!

Yes, this is how it is done with this case, SU's is the same way, you turn it on it's side, when you open it, the markers are upright to pull them out. Just turn it on the side to store them.

Oh wow, I was wondering about buying the markers when I want to get the ink pads... but you've just sold me - who needs an ink pad when you have markers lol??
I've been pondering for months wondering if I should buy the markers and after all that has been shared, I think I'm buying me a Christmas gift! Thank you ladies. You've helped me a lot.
I was debating that too, then I got a set of 24 colors from AC Moores for $23 and I think that will fit my needs...
Darn, it's such a pain not being independently wealthy with unlimited space to have every craft think my heart desires AND the time to use it all....!! LOL
Well, my markers came in and I got my Christmas present early, wow oh wow, this is so worth it! The markers are so juicy, I love being able to omit part of the stamp that I don't want..wow, they are wonderful!

I waited and got the markers well after I got all the stamp pads. If I had to do it again, I would do the marker set first. I especially really love them when doing flowers.
As I'm really new to SU, I have been using my upline's Stampin' Write Markers and while I think they are fantastic (hoping to get my own sets soon), I noticed that some of her's "fan out" at the tip due to overpressure when using. This leaves the tip not very user-friendly and hard to control when using and I was wondering if there is any way of fixing this, so you don't have to buy a new marker. Will the reinking you mentioned fix this?
Also, I noticed in the AUS catalogue that you can only buy the markers in sets and not individually. Does anyone know if SU are considering bringing them out for individual sale, as if you can't replace the markers individually (due to the overuse I mentioned above) then it really makes the sets a waste of money.
I will need to allow mine to be used by others when I start doing workshops and I'm not looking forward to them being ruined easily and then having to replace the whole set.
