So I am relocating my very nice, but far away stamp room from the finished basement to the main floor of my house. The basement room room was very nice because it was very large and had a large built in wall unit. But, I don't like being in the basement, removed from the rest of the house - even though it is a finished basement. There are no windows in my room and it gets lonely.
I had those long industrial fluorescent lights in my basement room and really want something a little more aesthetic since the new room will be on the main floor of the house.
For those of you who have remodeled or built new spaces, what kinds of lights do you like? What don't you like? I was thinking about possibly track lighting so I could focus it but I'm afraid of shadows being cast for areas that aren't directly under the bulbs. I'm also concerned with emitting too much heat from them. I LOVE the look of pendant lights but same issues I think with the shadows/heat.
I never got any shadows with the fluorescents but I think they're awfully ugly.
I can't really recommend anything for permanent lighting, but in regards to task lighting, the OTT-LITE can't be beat. I have a true color lamp by OTT and it is awesome for making cards - I never realized how I couldn't see the colors as well with a regular light before!
If you're lucky, sometimes you can find them at Joann's when they are on sale and when you can use a free shipping code too.
I would prefer to have hanging lights in my stamp room, but it's not an option. I have two Ott lights, and really like them. Mine arent' attractive, but really do a great job. They have other models that look nicer. I got the most recent light when Joann's had them on for 50 % plus free shipping.

My big Lots has natural light bulbs very cheap. I have used some regualr lamps, and put these bulbs in. Just like the one OTT I have. As others say, they are absolutely wonderful for seeing the colors as true, and for whatever reason they cast no shadows. I have 3 around my table and 3 from behind me (that's because I am in a dark attic), so maybe volume of light is waht prevents the shadow?
I am in a room with one small window which is pretty much blocked because of the shelf that holds my mags and cards. I don't have flourescents at all. Which does make me happy because flourescent bulbs do leach out the Vitamin A out of your eyes so I try to avoid them. They never did make me feel that good! I have several overhead light fixtures which I use Reveal bulbs in for good color. They are great for working on paper cutting and such. BUT for my desk I have two lights. One clamp style light with a Reveal bulb in it and also a flip up Ott Light which I love to the natural color. I can position it anywhere so shadows don't bother me. I usually have it to my upper left since I'm right handed.

I'm in the garage & my DH just put up my 8 foot flourescent light last night. It's WONDERFUL. Plus there's a window next to the tables. If it's nice out I open the big doors too so I have lots of natural light & can watch the birds, etc.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I had in my basement but seeing as how my new room is really a converted bedroom on the main floor I don't want to have 8 foot lights installed for resale issues...
Don't know if you are going to be able to avoid the shadow issue without the flouescent lights and/or having a small desk lamp, that you can move to avoid the shadow. I have 3 of the 4 ft. flourescent lights in my workshop and they really are attractive and there are no shadows in the room. I also have several of the Ott lights and they are great for extra lighting and the true color...but the flourescents are great for reducing the shadows. JMO.

3-4 foot fluorescents? Still the long bulbs though, right? Are they out in the open, like directly on the ceiling or are they in those little boxes with the "covers"?
