Default So how do you organize your ribbon?

My first poll!!! Anyway ~ I am trying to organize my ribbon. I want it in one spot so I do not have to search for what I am looking for.

DO you sort (organize) your ribbon and if so do you do so by type (organdy, grosgrain, satin etc) or by color? AND do you keep your SU ribbon seperate from your other ribbon?

I do not have a way to really post a pic of my system right now but I have all my smaller ribbon in the cropper hopper mini boxes and those are inside of a small tackle box anything that does not fit in those mini boxes is going on a piece of 5x7 foam board and being put in a rubbermaid container

You didn't have a category for....by size of spool! I sort by color without SU included. I am having my brother make me a ribbon holder so I can be more organized with it. He is a whiz with wood working stuff.

LOL! Geez I knew there were more options!!! I was trying to make it easy for myself but you just threw in another kink!!!
I do not have room for a ribbon organizer to be out in the open so I am going to have to go for hidden ribbon

I have the ribbon boxes from Target, and although I thougt they would hold more per box, they work for now...My ribbons are sorted according to their order in the catalog, if I have them (I don't have them ALL yet)grosgrain are in the top row (although some turn a little hard becasue they are a little squished in there) then organdy, and cording, and my non-SU! ribbons are in another box alltogether...

Me too! I have some lengthes of assorted robbon too short for spools, I keep them in jars sorted loosely by color. They look so pretty on the shelf. I'm using the short scraps of ribbon much more because I can see them.

Wouldn't it be nice if SU came up with this fabulous ribbon holder in July. I for one still have them in a couple of shoe boxes that I have punched holes in with the ribbon sticking out. I do have them separated by SU and none SU and type also. This has worked for me ok so far, BUT I would be happy to find a really good one, if SU came up with a grand and exceptional one. I was so tempted to grab the Target one everyone was talking about this week. Just trying hard to stay away from spending money in those stores and buying from myself. . It seems like I go into Target or Walmart to get a few items and come out spending a few hundred.

Sort??!! I'm supposed to sort!!?? LOL

I really want the Good to Go ribbon organizer, but my Mike's didn't have it when I went today Until then its in plastic bins in no order since my lovable kitty jumped on the table and knocked them off. I had just sorted by type and color the day before, so it got stuffed where it would fit!

I have too much to fit in one of those little containers from Walmart! Someone in another post said how nicely they fit--well, mine had to go in shoeboxes!
I sort by type: grosgrain organized in color families and SU ones in rows beside the others.
Organdy, organized in color families, SU mixed in.
Gingham fits in the Walmart container right now!
This post caught my eye, because I just organized them today

I store mine on trouser hangers, sorted by type -- gross grain on one rod, wide organdy on one rod, narrow organdy on another.

Great responses! Thanks so much! I am thinking I will mix them all up and hope for the best!!! I do have some that will stay on rolls - mostly SU but I hope they will fit in the back of the container I purchased. Gosh I wish I had a camera to show you a picture!
Keep the responses coming!!!

SunnyStamper, I had mine on a trouser hanger, but got tired of having to pull all of them off to get to the one I wanted to use.
Do you like yours this way?

I have mine by kind and in clear ribbon holders from Target (when they had them). Now...I need more holders.

I have gingham in one, sheer/organdy in another, small satin in another, etc. The new ribbons I just bought last week, are still in the bag since I'm out of space in my holders. I think I'm going to take some of the ones I don't use a lot and put them in the drawer. That will clear up space for the new ones.

For traveling, I take my Cropper Hopper and I have about 1 yard of ribbon wrapped around embroidery (sp) spool cards.

I have 5 or 6 bins of ribbon...so I finally had to go by color. It was working for a while when I put the grosgrain in one, organza in another, then I started buying alot of gingham and it got too crazy.

That is a SERIOUS ribbon collection! But absolutely no laughing here--just envy! Is there a smiley for that? maybe But since I know you sell awesome ribbon, I'm tempering my jealousy and thinking, "Hmmm, which new ribbons should I buy from Sweet Miss Daisy?"

Well I do not have a camera right now to take pics but I do have a scanner so I scanned in how I am storing my ribbons.

The little boxes are Cropper Hopper Mini Boxes and you can find them at HL or Mikes 12 for 3 bucks or something. I put ribbon that is narrow enough and under 5 yards in these and they go inside a Tackle Box from Walmart which is around $3 now and hold about 40 or so Mini Boxes. (I have 3 of these).

Then I decided all the rolls or ribbon were taking up a bit too much room so I have purchased Foam Board and cut it into 5x7 pieces and wrapped any other ribbon that will not fit in the boxes and is less than 5-10 yards (more than that and it would just be too thick on the board I think). I have done those kinda by color and I don't think there is any SU on them. These will go into a Photo/Media Storage box that you can also find at Walmart or Lowes and they are $5.44 at walmart. They are large enough to fit DVD's so it works perfect.

So for the rest that are more than what will fit in the miniboxes or the board I am leaving on the roll and they will go in the back of the media box.
My whole reason for this question is that all my SU ribbon is seperated from my "other" ribbon and I am trying to decide if I should mix it in or not. I am not a demo so that is not an issue for me.
Thanks for you help!!! I will be so happy when I get this project done!!!!
So here are the pics for you.

I only have one ribbon spool on my rack that is not SU. It is the one third down on my third pic. I have three other ribbons just set on a book case that are not SU.

Good for you not getting all tied up in the ribbon obsessions!!! LOL! Some times I wish I did not have so much because then my choices would be easier

I have mine organized by spool size and then color in the new Good to Go system I got at M's. I love that it has room for all those little bobbin ribbons I bought just to sample the colors. I have one on my desk and the other one is under the desktop. But almost all of my ribbon is still on the spool, so this holder works really well for me. I had made my own rack which actually held more ribbon, but then they were on dowels and I had to use straight pins to keep them from unrolling. I prefer the no-dowel systems. HTH

I do like my ribbon this way. I cut a slit on the cardboard side of the spool and slide the ribbon end through it so the ribbon doesn't unroll while it's hanging. I just pull off the length I want, cut it, and slide it back thruough the slit. If I do need to take a spool off the rod, it doesn't take me too long to slide them all on and off.

WOW...some of you have way m ore ribbon than I do. I have one of those cheap Oriental Trading boxes with the holes on the side. It holds most of my ribbon for now, but the larger spools of SU ribbon don't fit in the box. I would love to have my DH make a nice rack for me....maybe later on down the road. I used to just dump them in a drawer and fish for them. But, got that cheapo box and that's really helped for the small amount that I ahve now....When I cleaned out the drawers...I had 4 spools of the same blue....I'd say a better organizing system would help and be cheaper since I wouldn't be buying the same color all the time. Love you guys' ideas!

Default Welllllllllllll

I'm in the "other" category too.

Actually I'm just greatful that they are in a box of any kind (bought 2 of the long plastic ribbon organizers at M's this weekend, need a couple more). At least I can see them now, instead of in the photo box so I couldn't see the pretty colors..... Mine are in the boxes, but not organized yet. I'm trying to get them organized by color family. That seems the best way for me.

I have all kinds of ribbon from before my SU days. I don't have a lot of SU colors yet because I'm trying to use some before getting more. My DMC floss (matching SU colors is in a plastic fruit tray with cover which has 4 compartments for each color family and the small middle one for dip has my neutrals. I add ribbon and fibers to that when I find ones that match). Other ribbon is organized by length. I have a few that only have a small piece left. They are more accessible so I will use them first if I can. As I get rid of the non matching ribbons I want to sort by color family.

I am a newbie demo to SU! And I have to say....I am EXTREMELY jealous of all the ribbon I see you ladies have! I am trying to build up my supply from SU! and Non SU! I am kinda embarressed to say that I don't have much of a collection, and most of ya'll have WAY more experience than I do. But for now I keep mine in these clear plastic Ribbon Caddies the kind you get from Garden Ridge. They are $4.99. I really don't like it. I mean it is perfect for NON SU ribbon, but since there is a lid attached to it, the lid will not close if you have SU ribbon in there. I have the grosgrain ribbon from SU and they are too tall for this container. I am really trying to organize my ribbon as I buy them from SU and from other retail stores. I have been into some demonstrator's homes and have seen others use the wire racks to organize theirs. They just screw the racks to the walls and place the ribbons up on thier sides and feed the ribbon through the slots of the wires. I like this idea, I really do. However, one demo told me that the bigger spools from SU don't fit in the wire system. They are to wide. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I learn from the best!!

Thanks,
Stacy

Mine are sorted by color and type (grosgrain, sheer, gingham) and I have them on a curtain rod between two cup hooks. My craft room is also my basement utility room with sink, etc. so it doesn't matter if it looks real attractive. It's all about accessibility. I find I only use the stuff I can get at easily.

Well I now have all my "other" ribbon on the foam board by color and put in the rubbermaid container. I then put the other ribbon that was more than 10 yards (mainly su) in the drawer of my rolling cart (did not fit in the back of the rubbermaid like I had hoped) but now all my ribbon is in 4 containers and I am happy that it is a bit more organized. when I have a chance I will post more pics!

Thanks for your comments and ideas!

Default ribbon storage...halved tubes

I had my ribbon on dowels but that was a pain if I wanted to remove a roll-seemed to always need the roll in the middle so had to remove too many...
so...
my hubby helped me cut in half lengthwise the tubes from fabric in the store...
then I covered them with contact paper so they looked nice, could spray paint them also
I then attached them one under another on two boards which were then mounted on the wall of my craft room

each row of ribbon is 42 inches long and I have 6 rows of them
now all my ribbon is in one place and visible to me.

if anyone would like pic let me know and i can try to take a digital of it
any questions just ask me at

I built a ribbon holder with 2 dow rods the same size diameter as the center hole of the ribbon roll, then cut it in half. Another larger dow rod cut to extend about 10 inches above the shorter smaller dows. Drilled small holes, glued and mounted the 4 smaller dow rods at the 4 corners of a square cut large enough for 4 rolls of ribbon to turn w/o touching each other. The larger dow rod was mounted in the center (used for a handle or pick up). For security purposes I screwed the 5 dows from the bottom side of the square to ensure stability.
I sort my ribbons by Solids, Prints, Seasonal, etc -
You can place the square on a turntable (lazy susan) but mine just sits on my table top. When I need ribbon I remove the tape holding it on the roll, roll off how much I need and tape it back.
This works for me. Maybe it will for someone else

I have a stampin up cardboard box from an order with two thin wooden dowels running through holes in the sides and then 2 thicker dowels positioned on top for the wider spools. I have them grouped by color and just put my cardstock up to the spool for comparison.
