Default Sewing Machine Recommendations Needed

I was in the midst of a DIY curtain project and I mentioned to my husband that it would be nice to have a sewing machine. Mind you, I've not sewn since sophomore year in high school, so any sewing would be the basic stuff if I purchased one. I'm always doing some odd and end home project and wish from time to time that I had a sewing machine instead of asking a friend to do it for me or using heat and bond to make quick seams.

Any suggestions on where to start for purchasing one? Is there an online site where I can compare machines/models? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks
Kelli

I also recommend Janome. My first machine was a Janome and I bought a new one a few years ago - got another Janome. I purchased my second one from a store online but I cannot remember who. I would suggest going to a sewing machine store and looking at the different machines, then shop on line for the best price. I just noticed that Overstock.com has Janome both refurbished and new.
