Default Scotch ATG gun

I finally gave in and ordered an ATG gun since I've been using up tape runners quickly with this season's card production.
It comes with two rolls of 1/4" tape, but I would like 1/2" rolls.

Can you recommend where to purchase the 1/2" tape?
Who has the best price on refill?

Is there a learning curve using the ATG? When I apply the tape and lift the gun I get a glob of sticky tape at the end which I pick off to prevent a bump on the front side of my mat...??? It that normal? Could it be the tape?

Do you have the ATG gun that takes 1/2" rolls? The pink ATG gun only takes 1/4".

I've had the same problem...but with the shim and practice it's better...not as many lumps.

One thing that I've noticed that makes a difference (for me, at least), is to release the trigger just a titch (technical term) before I get to the end of where I'm laying down the tape, then pull the gun slightly towards me as I lift it up. That seems to tell the tape to stop dispensing or something and breaks it off more cleanly. It may help...

Then you shouldn't buy 1/2" tape. My daughter uses 1/2" and that fits in her yellow ATG gun. Maybe some can confirm this for me. My pink ATG gun is probably 8 years old. So maybe it has changed.

There is a different type dispenser that takes 1/2 " tape. It's made by Scotch. Mine is gray and I got it at Joann or Micheal's with coupon. It takes normal Scotch tape rolls (double sided). It's hand-full size...like a big fat tape runner, no handle like ATG.

Do you have a photo or a product number or anything? I can't seem to find one anywhere online... Thanks in advance for any info!

Thanks for all the feedback. It is what it is.
I'm working with it, in fact I almost through the first roll of tape.

Some things are just not worth the aggravation they cause. I have a couple of friends who feel the same way about their ATG guns. You will find something that works best for you. Before buying the ATG Gun, I purchased refills for my Tombow snails at Penwa.com. They were a much better price than at craft stores.

I felt the same way about Zig Clean Color markers. They were just too aggravating for me, so I sold them. Time is precious. Now, my ATGs and I are very good friends.

I just realized that at the semi-regular classes/get togethers I’ve gone to at my LSS, not one person uses an ATG.

I tried several at an LSS (closed) when learning to stamp, and while usable, couldn’t get past the size or the feel, especially with a minor and injury and then arthritis. Since my tape runner is a most-used tool, it better be one I love!

Sue, it's called Scotch Tape Applicator. Scotch® Double-Sided Tape Applicator.
I don't know if that link will work. Also at Amazon, but higher price

Thanks for sharing. When I return the ATG refills at Michaels, I will seek this out.
Scotch double sided tape is a bit pricey but a roll has 25yds. There may be other double sided tapes on the market that will fit the applicator.
Scotch 665 Permanent Double Sided Tape 12 x 900 Clear Pack Of 2 Rolls - Office Depot

For the time being I'll use Adtech tape runners, good price for a 4 pack but they only have 8 yds per roll.
Amazon.com: Adtech 05603 Glue Runner Permanent 35Yds Total (4 pack Each), 0.31 x 315

And there is also good ole' Elmer's Craft glue as a back up.

Thank you! I couldn't even find it on the Scotch website - go figure! They are in stock at my local Michael's, so I can probably use a coupon and get one fairly cheap! I don't often need 1/2", but this will make it easier/more efficient when I do...

I can’t imagine my card- making without my yellow ATG gun. I use only the 1/2” adhesive. ( I keep a roll of 1/8” double stick tape handy for narrow ribbons and the like.). Scotch double sided tape is nothing like the adhesive that the ATG uses. There is a slight learning curve to getting used to rolling the adhesive and replacing the roll, but it is so worth it. The adhesive can be rolled out of the way if you go off the page, and it is far more flexible and forgiving than the double sided. It is also handy for making tiny adhesive balls that are great for adhering that ribbon end that wants to unspool a whole roll. I order the adhesive through Amazon, most recently a dozen rolls (36 yds. each) for $41.

I've always bought my refills at ScrapbookPal. As for operating it, I had the same problems as mentioned, and still will on occasion, but I have found as Sue said, let go of the trigger a hair before where you want to end. It will tug slightly and no glob. Also what has also helped ME is to hold the gun straight down like a vertical line from your hand to the rolling point. It glides better for me. The biggest problem I have with the gun is that the tape migrates off the roller. I have to open it up and re-guide the tape across where the roll of tape is. I always find it has moved off of it and that causes it to migrate off the dispensing roller.

I use the Ad-Tech tape runners too. I buy them from Amazon by the case. Not much cheaper to buy in bulk, but I otherwise have to buy so often. The $58 case lasts 6 months for me which is probably about 350 cards.

Bohodiva and Annifran, please tell us more about AdTech. I just read several terrible reviews that reported it was weak and cards fell apart and things fell off!! This was for the tape runners (I don't know what else they make)

Try using a shim (see post #5 on THIS THREAD) - it made all the difference for me!

I used to use (and love) AdTech for lots of things - up to and including instead of Tack It Over and Over on my unmounted rubber stamps - but they changed the formula and now I don't use it for ANYTHING! It seems to either absorb into whatever you put it on or solidify into a non-sticky substance or something, but it's not the adhesive I used to know and love, by any stretch! Others may have a different experience but that's mine, for what it's worth...

Default ATG hints

Be sure you have released the trigger so the tape does not advance while you use a quick flicking motion to break the strand of the tape off. After a few tries you should have the knack of it.

Just recently bought myself an ATG, and can confirm the PINK gun will ONLY take the 1/4" tape. The YELLOW gun will take a variety of sizes, as it comes with the necessary adapters for them.

Yes!!! That's exactly what I do with mine and I never get a sticky blob of glue. Sometimes, I get in a hurry and don't take the time to do it right and then, yes, big blobs.
