For anyone who has been wanting one of these, I just got one from Blitsy for $90.96. That's with shipping included. Their normal discounted price is $112, but with the Sunday Brunch Discount you get an additional 30% off until 3pm CST.: Very happy with my score since I can now cross this item off my future want list.
From what I can tell, It's basically the same thing except this can foil an entire 12x12 sheet edge to edge. I've been wanting a laminator with foil setting for quite a few years, but it's been low on my priority list. No other machine I've looked at over the years can handle this size. They may be out there, but I imagine they would be larger (and more expensive) professional type machines. If I already had a laminator, I don't think it would be worth replacing it with this. But....since I don't, and I was able to get this one for similar to what the others cost, why not? The larger size capability gives me more options. I do love my options!
Do I need to look for anything special when I am looking at laminators for the foil technique? I saw a Scotch brand on Walmart online for under $20 but don't want to spend until I find out if it will work.
I found a heat free one for $1700!!! What??? I tried to put a link but it wouldn't work. It was on Walmart online. I'm trying to figure out what makes it so special!

You need a laminator with sufficient heat to foil and thicker paper needs more heat than thinner paper. In case you did not see it, I put a link above on Amazon for the laminator that Jennifer McGuire uses and the 9" model is $20. The 12" model is $30. I have not used the laminator yet only because I have not set up my laser printer yet, but if Jennifer McGuire is happy with that laminator, I'm sure I'll be pleased.
HTH.

Ok..watched video. Then HAD to order laminator and loads of foils. I already have a new laser printer! I cant wait to try this!
You all are such enablers!
Oh my. My Michaels had the Deco Foil on clearance for $1.99 and I bought a couple of tubes of it (because OOH SHINY!) and I was planning to use it with scor-tape for stripes. I read in the instructions that you could use it with a laser printer and laminator, but actually seeing it done - WOW.
Check the quantity of the ones at Michaels. Some of the cheaper ones have only 1 sheet.
Yep, mine have only one sheet. I'm ok with that, though - if I decide I don't like them as much as I think I'm going to, it's a small enough quantity that I'm not going to be too upset about getting rid of them (instead of my normal practice of keeping them for "someday" when I have more time to figure them out".
There are lots of places to get the foil, but here are the two places that I've bought from so far and both shipped fast. I haven't used the foil yet, but this weekend I'm gonna get all set up and try it - WOOHOO!!!!!!!

My Michaels has quite a bit of this on sale for $2.49 regular $4.99. I almost jumped on it, but then I remembered two things:
1. I don't have a laser printer
2. I don't have a laminator
Just took a deep breath and let it go! LOL I just can't afford to buy those two items just for this process, no matter how much fun it looks!;)
She linked on her blog what printer and laminator she used. The brother laser printer was only $99.00 and the toner cartridges run from $17.00 to $28.00 depending on where you buy them. The laminator was only 19.99 on Amazon. So even though I got a new color laser in the office two weeks ago it doesn't have a straight path for the paper and wasn't working. So I gave up and ordered her printer. It will be nice to have a printer in the stamp room too. Everything will be delivered by next Wednesday. I cant wait to start doing this cool technique. Oh did anyone else see the video on just using a laser printer to make the foil adhere to the toner. It was genius.
You don't have to have a laser printer or laminator to use foils. Just about any adhesive can work. Clearsnap makes a line of Design Adhesives that are great with foils. You could also stamp and emboss with sticky embossing powder. Lots of other options.

I just want to add that Jennifer McGuire did a video on 5 ways to use foil. 4 of them are without a laminator.
Yep....fell right into the "ENABLERS TRAP". Ordered the Royal Sovereign 12-Inch Laminator (CS-1223) 13" opening and a Brother 3 in 1 laser printer. Wish me luck! I wanted a scanner, copier so I could maybe use my rubber stamps and digi images. Not expensive....$140.00 at Best Buy

My printer will be here Wed. My laminator Monday! I am beyond excited to start playing with the foils and new techniques!
Did you check out the Clearsnap Design Adhesives? They aren't just adhesive sheets, they're designs made out of adhesive. When you rub the foil on them after adhering them to paper you have a pretty foil design. My LSS carries them. I'd give you a link to their website if I knew how with my phone. :(

I asked for the cheap brother laser printer for Christmas so that I could do image transfers in my art journal, but was overjoyed with the shiny foil techniques. Yayy! 2 techniques with one tool. (Already had a laminator from a cookbook project with my mother...again, 2 techniques, 1 tool...now I am afraid to ever throw ANYTHING away. It might come back around!
Pictures of final results please! I tried a scotch laminator and heidi swapps foils last night but got lots of black spots! Hoping it's just my laminator
I have a brother printer and have been able to foil with my foil master and Royal Sovereign. When I get black spots using my foil master, it's usually because the print quality was not good (could be the paper or printer settings) or my heat setting was not high enough.
With the Royal Sovereign I almost always have some black spots, but as long as my print is good it's not too bad. I haven't used heidi's foil yet, but will this afternoon to see how it compares to my other foils.
I have Laminator Scott for 20 at Walmart. don't work that well for me. I am buy the Heidi Swapp Minc Foil machine the mini one at Joann for 59.00 dollar. Is it worth it? even tho. I did have a leaser printer? what are pors and cons over big one vs the mini Heidi Swapp Minc Foil machine? How did kit is there? I am try make listed of kits to look for? But, I sure out there? Dose anyone have any subguesset. I am try to if worth or not?

Here is an aritcle that givs excellent advice on foiling, machines, printers and foil. Hope it is helpful:
I was lucky to have had experience with laser black toner applications requiring heavy toner coverage, and was printing two to three transparent overlays and layering them to get enough coverage to efficiently block out light for photo transfers. A monochrome Canon solved the problem. When foiling became popular again I was sure there wouldn't be a problem and immediately purchased foil. To my disappointment the results were poor spotted results. I purchased the Minc, on sale at my local craft store, and the combination of my Canon and the Minc completely solved the problem. The samples included with the mini Minc were of poor quality, and they all ended up in my trash bucket. I purchased the mini after the original Minc for its convenient size, love it, and every free sample included were all substandard. I'd suggest just tossing them unless their quality control is better now. Bottom line get the Minc and a Canon monochrome laser as the article recommends, you won't be disappointed.
I love the Minc! :-) At first I bought just the film and tried with my $30 no name laminator that I already had. It kind of works if the paper is not too thick, but I experienced some difficulties with black spots where the film did not really stick to the paper.
However, with the Minc machine you may get film sticking to non-printed areas (the surface gets kind of shimmery) if you increase the temperature too much. But since there are 6 regulator steps, there is usually one step that is close enough to the ideal foiling temperature, and in that case you get great, consistent results.
I found that the type of foil doesn't seem to matter that much though, or maybe I was just lucky. I just bought a bunch of rolls on eBay and they work great.
