Default Rubicoil system ?s

Ok Beate, Cambria and Starlitstudios - I'm gonna probably cave soon and end up buying a rubicoil. SCS just blows any budget that I might have

Here's some ?s for those who have them?

Do you like them?
Are they easy to use?
Any tips/suggestions for users?
Where did you get yours?
What size coils did you get? Are they a good size?
With one length of coils you can get a few projects out of it?
Do you use matboard for the covers or something else?
Any other tools needed besides the machine and coils?
Any website recommendations?
Anything else we should know about them?

That's all the questions I can think of for now

I want one of these! www.laminatorwarehouse.com has them for $139, but I have seen them as high as $218 online. Any pointers/tips from you experts out there?

Ooh you *need* one, right Catie?

Beate made Cami & I *both* order on the same day! I thought I could just get away with checking hers out first, then ordering.

No such luck.

SO easy, and *so* much better (IMO) than the other ones out there!

Do you like them?
See previous post ;)
Are they easy to use?
My kids have made spiraled books already! Chan is 7, Adri is 5. Nuff said!
Any tips/suggestions for users?
You won't be able to stop unless you hit the wall of exhaustion from spiraling everything! ;)
Where did you get yours?
Laminator Warehouse for the Rubicoil
www.coilconnection.com for the coils - such pretty colors! Such great prices!
What size coils did you get? Are they a good size?
With one length of coils you can get a few projects out of it?
It all depends on what you are doing with the binder. I got a bit of everything from Beate. She spoiled me on her birthday (but then. . she got like 100 of *every size* in black!
Do you use matboard for the covers or something else?
Sure! Matboard! Cardstock! Acetate! If you can punch it, you can use it!
Any other tools needed besides the machine and coils?
Some scissors & pliers to cut & bend the coils.
Any website recommendations?
see above
Anything else we should know about them?
They are fun! Not very heavy, store well on a shelf. The only thing is finding storage for the coils you will *have* to have!

Question

I've looked at something similar at office supply stores, but haven't purchased anything yet. I thought I could use it for my calalogs but it was too expensive to save myself from driving to a Kinko's 30 miles from me. What kinds of things do you use it on, hostess gifts, specials for purchases etc?

Oh, man, I had absolutely NOOOOO intentions of getting something like this, and then I go and read how much fun it is.....stepping away from my computer. Staying away until the notion passes!

Thanks for the info!

I have been going back and forth about getting this. I think I'm going to have to finally cave in and get one. I just love getting new toys to play with. Do you think I could use it to do my catalogs or would it be easier to just go to kinko's? Does it take a long time to come in? I just want to thank everyone at SCS for helping me spend my money hee hee!

I like the idea of being able to make your own coil binded books, however, I can't justify spending that much right now. Is there a supplier that sell just plain journals, address books and such that can be embellished and stamped?

If you aren't ready to spend the money, you can make your own covers, choose the paper, and then take it to Kinko's to have it assembled.

Think about all the benies of owning one-

Teacher Appreciaition gifts
Your own personilized phone book
" " " journal
Kiddie gifts
Sweet and simple scrapbook
cool cards that fold up and are coiled (like trifold)
Your SU! catty can be spiraled for easier lookability (is that a word? heehee)

the possibilities are endless and yes it is definitely worth the money!!

But the #1 benefit is that u can have a totally SU! look!!!!

But can you really spiral your own? I got the same rubi that beate got, and there's *no way* I can get my catalog in there.

Would you really take the time to cut off the spine and remove adhesive and punch for yourself?

:: ducking to avoid catalogs thrown my way ::
I take 9 to Kinkos the day Brown delivers them, and pick them up later. They do a fab job adding clear covers, and pockets and such, and I don't have to rip my hair out.

Just sayin'. . . Catie, 2004-2005

Needmore....

I just bought mine from filmsourceinc too! I am lucky in that i live just down the road from them and don't have to pay shipping. i am anxiously waiting by the phone to hear it's ready for me to pick up! You can't beat their deal: $169 plus free crimper and $24 worth of coils free too!

I'm like a kid at Christmas..... I can't hardly wait!

I had just about talked myself into buying a comb binding system when I found this thread. Any thoughts on how the spiral binding compares to comb binding? Thickness, price, ease of use, etc.?

Yep... what Jenn said.... the only thing I don't like is.....

I can't stop binding stuff!! Everywhere I look, everything I see... I just want to run my beautiful coils through!! I've gone over the edge!! It is SO easy!!

Don't waste your money on ANY other binding system. I have the Rollabind, Beate got some kind of other thingy, then hated it. GET THE RUBI!!!

Check out www.coilconnection.com for all the pretty coils!

I LOVE my Rubi.... wish I had bought one a long time ago!!!

Boy am I glad I read this thread! I had been eyeing the comb bind systems. Who knew what a Rubicoil was? Now I am a bad, bad girl, I was trying to save some of that money especially with taxes due Friday!

I have the roll-a-bind but don't use it that much because the finished product isn't as sturdy! Although I made a cute anniversary coupon book for DH.

I got my rubi from www.laminatorwarehouse.com and I got my coils from www.coilconnection.com you can get all of the pretty color coils at this place and you don't have to get 100 of one color you can get 25 of 4 colors.
It costs a little bit more than getting 100 of one color but like you said, it would take forever to use 100 of one color.

Can you explain why this is better than a comb binding system? I know I'm going to buy something and spend a lot of money so I'd like to make an informed decision. Thanks.

Tina, I just went to coilconnection and she's got some cool sounding colors. Unless I missed it I didn't see any pictures of the colors? You are right it is more to get mixed lots of coils but much better than buying 100 of the colors.

Mine will be here on Monday You are lucky if you didn't have to pay shipping!

I like it better than the Rollabind because it is more sturdy and WAY easier. You just slide your paper/cardstock in, pull the handle down, and it cuts like buttah.... then the coils just twirl right on..... it's AMAZING!! Just clip the ends and bend the last bit over.... PERFECT everytime!

I don't know about the comb binding first hand, but I think that is what Beate got and then ordered the Rubi and LOVES it!! We are all just a tad gah gah over it! Plus... the coils are so much fun in all the colors they come in.

Maybee Beate can tell you more about the comb binding and why she loves the Rubi. BEATE? BEATE??..... I'll yell for her

You can't flip pages & have the book stay flat with comb binding.
Coils let you do that.

Cami - rub Rubi! I need to go play with mine. She's lonely!

Thank you so much for all the info! I think I'm starting to understand your excitement. ;) Opening flat is important but even more telling to me was the item on the fact site about the coil working for tinier books while the comb wouldn't. I hadn't thought of that but I had thought of making tiny books!

Mine will be here on Monday You are lucky if you didn't have to pay shipping!
No shipping? On which thing, the rubi or the coils? I thought I paid shipping on the rubi, no tax but I'm not sure about the coils. Betty the coil lady was supposed to email me the total for my coils since I used my debit card but I still have not heard from her. Also, she said that she would mail me some samples of the colors of the coils since she didn't have pictures of them on the site. She said that she had them on it but the colors were not true colors because of how it looked on different peoples computers. That would be great if the the coils had free shipping. I ordered 10 mm chocolate brown, spring green, navy & fuchsia. I can't wait, it's killing me!!!

OK, Rubicoil experts, could you please explain what the crimper tool is and if it's necessary? I see it priced for $38.00....I can't believe I'm even investigating this...please, somebody, tell me why I think I can afford it, lol??? There must be some experienced rationalizers out there that have thought up EXCELLENT reasons why we NEED this??? Besides the "cool new toy" aspect, I mean?

Tina, oops, I was replying to two people in the same post. Another gal actually got to go and pick her rubi up since she lives so close to the website headquarters where she bought it from.

You'll have to let us know what you think of the colors
