Shading with these colors does not work well for me.
BG11 is so much lighter than BG13. I have tried Tip to Tip with marginal success to blend the color tones.
BG 13 & BG 15 are nearly identical . Side by side there doesn't seem to be any graduation of color.
And BG 18 is such a leap from BG 15 that it doesn't even seem to be the same color family.
I have tried Tip to Tip to soften the BG 18 , but it still doesn't look like the same color tone. It appears to have much more gray than the other colors .
I really like this aqua but shading is a struggle.
Any suggestions of other markers to use as a blending family for BG 11 & BG 13?

Hi Barbara,
I've used BG10, & BG11, with BG32. I've also used the combo of BG11, BG72, BG75, BG78. I'm still experimenting with my markers, but have found just because two colors are next to each other in number, doesn't always mean they blend the best. I use the color wheel too to help out.
My personal preference is always having a very light color in the mixture, and not everyone goes for that.........
Thanks , I always use 3 colors a light , medium and dark. Sometimes I use 4 colors to add either a very light or a very dark.
The Copic numbering system is supposed to be as follows:
If all three blending colors have the same "1st" number after the letter they should work together and usually they do.
The second number is how dark they are in that group.
B21-24-26 blend well. R22-24-27-29 blend well. Each color is a shade darker than the number before it
I just finished a card where I use R81-R83-R85 & R89 they all worked great together. R89 is a leap but it is the same color family just a lot darker.
This is not the case with the BG 11-13-15-18.
BG 13 & 15 look alike and BG 18 looks like a different color family .
This is why I am so befuddled

I know, I usually don't have an issue with with the numbering and the colors blending, but every so often, something just doesn't mesh as well, and that's when I have to step outside the "normal" lines and look for another shade that will work. I'm fortunate that I have all the colors and can do that.......
Like you, I've found most of the time the ones work together, the twos, and so on.

What "dark" color would you or anyone use with BG 11 & BG 13 ? I have a sizable collection of colors , but if I don't have the one suggested I will buy it. I really like that aqua, but I also want to do shading .
I tried BG 23 and it is a no go .

Did you try BG23 or BG32 as I suggested? I tried BG23, and I'm not wild about that one either, however, I do get a nice shading with the BG32, with BG11. You can have the BG 10 as an even lighter shade. Hope this helps.......

I want to do folds in a dress so I need a stark contrast for the dark color.
I just tried BG 11-BG 13 & BG 49. It is not too bad and I will probably go with that.
BG 49 is a lot closer to BG 11 & BG 13 than BG 18 .
Copic needs to offer a BG 17 . BG 18 is out there all by itself .

If you're looking for a stark contrast, that should work for you. If you have trouble blending the two color lines, you might try applying it with the Colorless Blender, or the Tip to Tip application.

I tried the tip to tip to get BG 18 to a color more like the BG 11 & BG 13 or 15, but it did not work. BG 18 looks like it has a lot of gray in it.
I am not having a probem blending the color lines . BG 11 works fine for that . My problem is finding a dark color that will work with BG 11-13-15.
Plus BG 13 & 15 look almost alike .
If you have BG 18 try it with the BG 11-13-15 and you will see what I mean
Here is an example that I colored when I didn't need a dark contrast. I only used BG 11 BG 13 & BG 23 and they blended just fine
Thanks. Now if I could find a dark color that would blend with BG11 & BG13 & BG15 the way the dark blue B26 blended with B21-B23-B24 on Santa's pajamas then i would be a happy camper
So far BG 49 seems to be my best option . Maybe Copic will offer a BG17 in the future to solve this problem

Barbara, I actually like the BG13/BG15/BG18 combo, but it does take a lot of back and forth to get it to blend well. Another color that I pull in sometimes for shading with BG11/BG13/BG15 is BG67. It's less saturated, but in real life, shadows are less saturated as well as darker, so this actually is a more "natural" look.
