Yep...absolutely adorable elephants!

I went to the Rocky Mountain Stamp Show yesterday and visited one of my fave vendors. Bought some stamps (of course!) and after looking at some samples, I asked about the coloring on some of them. I expected the Copic/Spectrum Noir answers, but what I didn't expect was that a few of them were Prismas...and they were WITHOUT any solvents. And they looked like Copics!!!

I will come back and post pics later today. They're on my phone and I'm on worship team this morning, so I have to be out the door really early. You'll be as flabbergasted as I was. I need to work with my Prismas a LOT more!

Not sure why, but I can't see the pic. Can any one tell me what I might be doing wrong?

I'm not sure. It could be something with your browser settings. Here's the direct link:

It should work.

I just have a few minutes before I have to make dinner for an early class tonight, but I wanted to put this up for you to see. I did adjust my prisma techniques a bit to achieve this...but just technique. NO solvents!

I have never had a problem but I did read somewhere that if you put one pencil at a time in the microwave for 10 seconds on high that will repair the "lead".

I have tried this and all it did was blister the paint on the outside of the pencil. I have on occasion, if a large enough length of the lead comes out just glue it back in with a good white scrapping/paper glue. Once it dries thoroughly, it sharpens just fine.

I found a unused box of 24 Prismacolor pencils in my collection today so now I have to run to get some OMS or "Gamsol".

I started reading this thread from most recent back, so here are my questions:

1) I found ONE video on YT that addresses how to do African-American skin tones. Are there any other tutorials?

2) Shadowing for beginners - that should be a course if it isn't already one.

3) Is there anyone who uses digital stamps along with pencils/OMS? Would love to see more tutorials for that.

This isn't a tutorial but you can slow her down and maybe (a big maybe) catch her pencil colors - she does photorealistic drawing, so remember us mere mortals aren't going to be doing photorealistic but we can take from her color palette. Also remember she draws maybe 500% + larger (guesstimation) than a stamp would be so we just can't get all those color nuances in our space. Hope it helps anyway even if for inspiration of what skin colors we can do.

So I had an idea but not the skill set to do it. Lol

I want to do most of the picture in pencil, but want to also add a pearlized portion for shine but I'm at a loss as to my options. Any suggestions?

I don't own one, but I have seen samples where a Wink of Stella pen was used over Copics. I would think it would work over pencils also.

Thanks for the Wink of Stella tip. Definitely in my cart to purchase.

For those that use OMS, what type of paper do you use. I bought Core'donations Premium cardstock, 110#. It's peeling with Tombow water color pens so I doubt it will work with pencils and OMS.

Sakura has a clear stardust gellyroll pen too.

Or if you have any pearlized powders that can be mixed with water and brushed on.

Try it first with the OMS before you give up on it - the OMS won't have the same effect as water.

I really did not like the "tooth" of Core'dinations cardstock for use with Prismacolor pencils and OMS. It was hard for me to get the easy shading I am used to. After many trials of different papers, I settled on Paper Trey white. I have always gotten good results with it. It takes repeated layering of colors and OMS well. I use Palette ink and I have never had a problem with smearing when I color with Prismas. I don't know how it would hold up with the darker Copics. I only have 2 Copics - the lightest blue and lightest grey ones to use for "haloing" images I have colored with my Prismacolors and those colors work fine on the Paper Trey paper.

I've given up trying to do ethnic skin with prismas, too many combinations. I have gone to Lyra Skintone colored pencils. The colors are already there. Has anyone else tried them?

I have a set but haven't played with them much. I like the way they color but have a hard time getting used to how to hold them with them being so chunky.

I need to get my pencils out and do some coloring......I use the Lyra skin tones but am still more comfortable with my Prismas. I go back and forth but the Lyras sure wouldn't be a waste of money!

Marti..I have had those for a few years and never really sued them LOL. Do they blend with OMS or can you just blend them with the pencils? I admit that i have never gotten the hang of letting the pencils blend themselves..I have to use OMS.

Oh that's too funny! I have never been able to figure out OMS! I can do it some but I am definitely not good with it. Before I discovered papercrafting I did large colored pencil "paintings" and always blended with the pencils and the colorless blender. Sorry I can't help with that!

For anyone interested in learning more about colouring with Prismas check out the website of "Kit and Clowder" These online classes are fantastic! You can either view heaps of video tutorials online or download them for using offline. There is also a 70 page book that can be printed off. These classes are run by an Australian girl called Alyce Keegan and the Kit and Clowder Facebook site is a great community to belong to. Alyce gives you one on one feedback for all the practise colouring that you send in to her, and is very encouraging and supportive. She also covers other pencils beside Prismas. The classes are reasonable compared to what you pay to spend an hour or so in a class at a SB store. Alyce also does classes for Copics, and watercolours. I am currently doing the Copic "Skin and Hair" course and the "Clothing" course and have just signed up for the Prismacolour pencil course! LOL. Check them out.

In case anyone is looking for a good deal, I just ordered a set of 48 from Amazon for only $33. Dick Blick sells them for $50, Mike's and HL for $90, and JoAnn for $100! I think it's a steal! They are direct from Amazon too, not a third party seller. Added a small pack of stumps and got free shipping too. Just thought I'd pass it along. Happy Coloring!

For anyone interested in online Prismacolour classes check out "Kit and Clowder". Really great online classes! You can download all the videos, get one on one feedback and be part of a great colouring community. I have done the Copic skin and hair and Copic clothing classes with this lady, Alyce Keegan and have now signed up for the Prisma classes! Great tutorials with a great teacher!

My stumps were from Taiwan, so I am not sure why it wouldn't move. After working on these for a few hours, I think I am going to stick with mineral oil. The smell of the baby oil is getting to me and I don't notice any difference.

Welcome to Splitcoast and our little pencil corner! Are you using mineral oil or mineral spirits? Baby oil is mineral oil with added scent.
