I'd like to know what everyone's favorite paper trimmer is. Right now I have a Fiskars one that won't cut even CLOSE to straight so I need to return it and get a new one.
The Making Memories trimmer is very nice and they sell it at Michaels so you can use a coupon for it. I bought one for my friend for her b-day and she loves it. I have the Carl paper trimmer and as much as I love it (it's lasted me for years and has a lot of different blades you can use with it) I think if I were to buy another I'd get the MM one since it has a larger flat area to work with. I do 12x12 scrapbook pages, if all you are doing is smaller like cards then the Carl is very nice. Neither of these 2 have had problems not cutting straight. I know the Fiskars is pretty well renowned for that.
SU! Tabletop or Tonic! Self sharpening blade (never need to replace!), lightweight and portable, cuts straight, can cut multiple pieces at a time - it is great!!!
got rid of that blimpin....fiskars....you got that right "can't cut straight" I currently have been in love with my pink and green provo craft cutter with a blade to score with.
Speaking of tonic ....love the scissors and currently trying out the new tonic punches........fun!
I have many trimmers, and right now my favorite is the Marvy Trimming Buddy, strangely enough. You can get different decorative blades for it and I haven't had any trouble getting it to cut straight at all. I also like the Fiskars Ultimate Craft Trimmer. What I like about that one is that it has a ruler on the right side as well so you can cut smaller pieces easily. They are both rotary trimmers.
I recently bought the 12" tonic. IT works great. I got it at Joannes with a 50% coupon- I was going to get the SU one but I liked have the big 12" base.
It cuts straight the measurements are easy to read and it is self sharpening.
I personally like the Cutterpede by EKSuccess. I know I'll need to upgrade soon, but it's good for me for now. I also have the BAsic Grey magnetic mat and Xacto knife, which I also like. From my research, the Genesis trimmer seems to be the end all and be all of trimmers. Only Bonnie's Best manufactures them and there is a waiting list to have one made. Unfortunately, right now, they're not taking orders.
I have also liked the Carl's but still prefer my Cutterpede over it.

Exact same for me. I found myself "enabled" by another thread about a month ago and ordered the 12" Tonic from Joann.com. I think it came to around $24 with the 50% coupon.
I really like the way it cuts. I seem to be a trimmer junkie and also have the Purple Cows trimmer. While it cuts nicely, it is difficult to see where you're cutting the way it's designed. In all fairness, I haven't worked with it a lot.
Another Tonic 12 x 12 table-top model lover, here! I got mine at Archiver's with a 25% off coupon. After going through three different Fiskars, a Cutterpede, and a Provo Craft (not necessarily in that order), I am IN LOVE with my Tonic! I will NEVER buy another trimmer (or replacement blades ;) ) ever again. Well worth it!
By Fiskars, I'm guessing you're using the one where you pop the blades in-and-out at the middle of the guide...
If so, these will distort over time and stop cutting straight. You can prolong the life for awhile by squeezing the center of the guide before making each cut -- but what a drag!
The Fiskars that SU sells now (with the aluminum bed and slot to drop-in the blades) is much better - no comparison. I need another, because I've worn off the numbers!
I also own the Cutterpede rotary trimmer, but only use it with the speciality blades.
I would like another alternative - I see where others like their Tonic and Carl cutters, but what do you like ABOUT them? In addition to cards, I scrapbook in several formats including 12 x 15 inches.

Buy a Tonic...I just did and I love it. I went with the same one that is in the Stampin Up catalog. That way I can take it with me when I travel. You will love it. And buy it from Joanns...there is a 50% off coupon right now!
I have had the SU Tabletop Cutter for about a year now and I absolutely love it!!! It cuts straight, no ragged or frayed edges and no replacement blades!!
I cannot imagine the amount of money I have saved in blades this year.
I have a DAHLE and it's way like the Making Memories one with the self sharpening blade and all. I love it, I've had it over a year now and I just totally love it, still cuts straight and perfect.
It can only cut like 3 sheets at a time. That's ok with me though.

I had the same question when I first got into SU. My teacher, Maddie Soler suggested that I use a "guillotine" chopper for cutting the card stock and purchase a rotary cutter for smaller items, photos and also for scoring. I got a fiskars and had to return it. Then a person from splitcoast suggested a Carl Cutter. I got a 12" one from Staples. Excellent! It also has blades you can purchase for different decorate edges.
I think the main point is to buy the best you can afford and the one that works for you. However, make sure you get one that scores. Also, buy from a store with easy return policy!

I have the MM and i love it. However, I think it is too heavy to drag to crops with me so I recently bought the Cutterpede. I am excited to use it because it has gotten rave reviews from so many. It is good to know I am not the only one having problems with my Fiskars. Good luck deciding!
I must have every 12" paper trimmer Fiskars makes and had no idea of the bad rep! I got the newest one a several months ago, with the sorta metal base that the paper sorta sticks to. I thought that it was me, not pushing the top of the paper against the guide when my cuts were not straight. Then I decided it must be the paper mfg.! I knew the previous versions of the Fiskars cutters were not the best, but do think the latest version is an improvement in their line. Now after reading all of these other posts I had no idea how bad Fiskars actually is and will check out the Tonic. Ah...the things you learn on this site! Thank goodness we are all helping each other to be better crafters!
Thanks for posting this question, SamanthaMaree! I have been wondering the same thing! Some additional questions for the pros: Do the MM trimmer or the Tonic have a scorer? Also, I don't do scrapbooks, mostly cards, tags, and other projects. Would you recommend a 6" or 12" trimmer? Thanks!

A friend of mine just cut the tip of her finger off with the tonic. She still insists it's great though. She's all like a girl in an abusive relationship, "It was my fault, Tonic would never hurt me if I just followed the rules" wahh wahhh wahhh. (I'm totally teasing, I don't want to offend tonics (as they apparently pack a nice bite, or women who are in abusive relationships)
My point is that apparently they are quite nice, if you will still love them after they bite your finger off.

the MM doesn't. I think the tonic is a guilliotine (I think I have a few extra letters in there) so I'd think no. I think that next someone is going to come on and tell you you will have to get a score-pal for that. ;)

Oh woodysgirl, I missed your other question. Even if you don't scrapbook still get the 12 inch trimmer, otherwise you will have a pain of a time cutting down 12x12 sheets of pretty patern paper to use on your cards.
man I talk a lot

Just did a quick search of Tonic on goggle. By trimmer do you only mean guillotine? and not a "slide" type of blade vs a rotary blade? Tonics come in guillotine and slide blades. I don't have room for table top anything, only room for a slide blade paper cutter, are Tonics still the best?
I would be that "friend"!
Yep, just yesterday my tonic took a nice bite out of me left index finger. It was 100% my fault because i did not use the finger safety guide. It is my favorite trimmer EVER. It is the Tonic guillatine (sp?). Be very careful and use the safety guard. I am lucky to still have a finger. It was BAD!
It was hard for me to use it again last night cuz I was scared to death, but we bonded again and I forgave it for trying to kill me.

 Wow. I have a Fiskars Trimmer, and I like it. Well, I haven't really used anything else, but space and $$ are factors. I just put a piece of printer paper under my cs or dsp (only trim off a small strip each cut, I use only one sheet per cutting session), and I don't have to give the edge of the paper a haircut with my snips. ...Okay, maybe it is time to move up.
I have the SU tabletop and LOVE It. What do I love you might ask? I kinda like that it isn't a full 12x12 because it is easier to carry places and takes up less room. I've been told it won't need to be sharpened and cuts straight.
I have kept my "it won't cut straight" fiskars, only because I need a scoring tool, but now I'm thinking I NEED a scor-pal.

It's going to buy her flowers and promise never to do it again
until next time

I have a Carl RT-200 and now that I've figured out to use the top edge as a guide instead of the bottom edge I love using it. Mine came with like 12 other decorative blades and a perforating one and a scoring one.
I also have a score-pal. I'm liking it so far, it is nice to not have to change out the blade on my cutter mid-project.
