Default Eyelet Problems

This is going to seem like a silly question....but I am having trouble figuring out how to set my eyelets!! Can anyone help with this?

I punched a hole in the paper, put the eyelet through and used the setter and a small hammer, but they just -refuse- to set!

Help!

What brand are they? SU's eyelets are very soft and easy to set. Some other brands aren't and you need to hammer *really* hard to set them. I always mangle them!

I use these all the time, not quite as easy to set as SU but MUCH less expensive... if you are going to use them a bit i recommend the MM instant setter, makes it a BREEZE! otherwise get a setter that looks sort of like a reverse philips head screwdriver (does that make sense??) and it will split and set the eyelets easily! Make sure you are hammering on a solid/hard surface like your kitchen countertop (protect the surface!)
If you're working on a card table or folding table, it doesn't work very well.
HTH!

Also make sure you have the right size setter--I was using a setter for 1/4 inch eyelets with my 1/8 inch eyelets and it didn't work well at all!!! LOL! After reading this thread I've decided that I am going to get the MM instant setter...save a lot of hassles

From experience, I would recommend you go with a different brand than MM. Try SU! or www.eyeletoutlet.com. I think you'll be happier with them.

There is a great sale at Queen and Co on brads and eyelets. I found it about an hour ago on the Stamping 101 forum. Here's a link: (I hope I did this right)

Aluminum eyelets are softer and will be easier to set. Personally, I hate the MM eyelets. Too hard. I have the Provo Craft Silent Setter and love it. Works best on aluminum eyelets (SU included) but with a little extra oomph, I was able to set my sisters MM eyelets. Probably because I'm stubborn and was going to MAKE them work!! LOL HTH

Everybody's right. I've been using MM eyelets and they are harder to set. I recently purchased some Bazzill and they are much easier...softer. But I was having problems setting myself, no matter how hard I pounded they wouldn't flatten. Problem was I didn't have a hard enough surface. I didn't realize it but I was on top of my stamping pad. Once I started hammering on the desk it worked. Of course I had the eyelet pad.

The MM eyelets were just so pretty! (And not to mention, on clearance at Joannes for .99!!!!!!)) Oh well...back to the drawing board there. I am going to head up to Hobby Lobby after work to fetch something pretty (hopefully) and try and drive my downstairs neighbor insane tonight!!!

I was going to mention as I was reading down the posts... that I have the SU eyelet setter and I could never get it to work. I have many of the MM eyelets and never had a problem getting them to set once I got the MM eyelet setter itself, a couple whacks of the hammer is all it takes. I got a Silent Setter and use it now... much quieter. I am glad that you found a setter that works.. my SU one went in the trash, I just couldn't get it to work for me. Pam

I have been using the SU setter since they came out with it and have no issues. I don't have great luck with the MM eyelets and if I do get them to set they split all over the place. That doesn't happen with my SU ones. So now I'm an SU snob. I love to smack them with a hammer and once you get the hang of it, it only takes a few hits. Then I tap the actual eyelet with the hammer to flatten it. I use a real hammer though not the little craft one. Whatever works for you!

Talking

I am also a believer in the SU eyelets. I had a cardmaking class at my work and think to to save money, I brought the MM eyelets. We had such a hard time trying to set them. One of the ladies, who is usually very timid was so frustrated, took a regually carpenters hammer and "whacked it so hard, that the eyet setter went though the cardstock, the protective mat and left a HUGE dent on our expensive conference room table! NO MORE PENNY PINCHING FOR ME!

Default Cutting board

I have a small wooden cutting board in my scrap room. It's vey handy for setting eyelets so I don't do damage to my desk or table and I only have to hit the eyelet one time.

I have the MM metal box set of eyelet setters (includes the hammer, three hole puches, the flower backing, two needles, a pair of tweezer looking things). I've never needed anything else.

I used MM eyelets for years and just recently bought some SU!. I find that when I set the SU! the front of the eyelet flattens out...I think they're too soft! I think I'll stick with the MM eyelets.

Yeah...I'm ok with the MM eyelets once I got them figured out and got the right setter. That and they are all on clearance at Michaels craft store for $1-$2 per container...can't beat that!!!!
