Default Buttons.. The New Trend?

Just wondered what my fellow card makers thought - are buttons the new trend for using as embellies on cards?? It seems to me that I am seeing more of them.

If you think that they are a trend - or not ! - let me know - what are good places to get buttons?

Thanks a lot!!!

They seem to be very popular these days. I know I've fallen for them!

I don't have any PTI buttons yet, but they're on top of my button shopping list. Nice colors, good variety of shapes & sizes in one bag and a great price! People who have them generally seem to be very happy with their purchase.

Buttons have been around in papercrafting for a long time. When I was a Stampin' Up demonstrator, well over 7 years ago, SU came out with buttons that coordinated with their ink, ribbon and card stock and everyone was going crazy! It was truly brilliant!

Basic Grey has had buttons for YEARS that match their fibers, ribbon, paper and brads and they have been selling like crazy. We have had them for almost two years and they have always done well.

I think if you purchase buttons, you don't have to worry about it being a trend. I would say if something had been selling well for over 7 years, it's probably not going away for a while. ;)

I went to AC Moore with coupons a few weeks in a row and bought Foof a La brand button assortments. Also got a HUGE bag at Oriental Trading Company. Then I separated them all by color. So much fun.

I think they are quite trendy and am hesitant to stock up too much. I don't want to be stuck with 8 million buttons when the trend fades -- also, I have 2 really cute flower buttons on my nightgown that I've been eyeing for a while! You never know where you can find them!

I, too, have been bitten by the button bug. I've gone a little nuts with them. I bought a few small packs (to see if I would like using them) from Wal-Mart. I LOVED them! Went back and bought a few more packs. I paid $1.76 for about 120+ buttons in assorted colors (primary, black and white mix, etc). I've enjoyed them on cards and scrabook pages.

LOL! Joan. You're too funny. Foof-a-La buttons are the cutest buttons I've ever seen! I see them everywhere. some of the girls on my design team wouldn't be caught dead without a Foof-a-La button on their cards! (I would stock up on those. Hee-hee.)

But really, my post is just an opinion. Others may vary!

I was giggling because I thought, watch, I'll say they are here to stay and then nobody will ever purchase another button again.

Total opinion here people, total opinion.

Too funny, Gina. It's more like all the stores are going to sell out of Foof-a-La buttons because you've mentioned them.

I love buttons. I've been buying them for a couple of years. Unfortunately, I rarely use them. :( I saw a super cute card that stamped stems and used buttons for the flowers. I keep thinking I'm going to try that and use up a few of my buttons. I can never seem to find the perfect use for them, but I'm working on it.

As a sewer for the last 25+ years, I have drawers full of buttons....I have so many, I'd have to live for about 348 years to use them all! I love buttons and use them as often as I can--on cards, fabric, crafts, you name it. They've never been "trendy" for me--I just love them and use them whenever I can
I'd attach buttons to anything that doesn't move (and even the dog is tempting!!!)....

I will always use buttons on my cards and LO's, trend or not. I don't think I've ever bought buttons since another hobby of mine is button hunting at yard sales & thrift stores, and I've found some amazing buttons on thrift store/yard sale clothing.

trend or no...

i LOVE buttons so i use them!

i say if you like them, use them. but then again i am not a demo, i don't blog, i'm not on a design team... i don't GO with the trends. i may buy what is trendy but not just because it is trendy.

i buy and use what i like.

OK, so i probably was no help AT ALL! LOL

I would have thought that buttons had been round for quite a while, but possibly they're moving more into cardmaking from scrapbooking. Even in cards I wouldn't have thought they were a new trend, though. I get mine anywhere and everywhere - off old clothes before throwing them out, in button shops. I tend not to buy the craft ones as they seem to me to be quite pricey. Well, I know they're not cheap in a haberdashery outlet either, mind you. Grab bags can be quite good value, I've had a couple from Buttons Galore.

They've been "around" for ages but I think they are definitely becoming more popular again.

Buttons have been around for years. I rarely remember to use them.

However, I wonder if their resurgence in popularity is because people are wanting to use their stashes more.

Or maybe because they go so well with the newest "fabric" craze.

I've been using buttons for years on cards and scrapbook LOs. And on lots of sewing projects also. I love buttons. Glad to know they are finally catching on! Although, I tend to like things way before they become trends. Its probably just coincidence. Things like palm trees, chocolate brown, & cupcakes, I was loving them for years before they got popular. To decorate my room/bathroom palm tree theme I used to have to wait until I went on a tropical vacation to find stuff, now its in every home dec store. Funny how things go like that.

Yes that's what I think too & i usually put on groups of three - well of lots of embellies really - not just buttons but bling & stuff as well, does anyone else think groups of three are.....pleasing? We have a surplus store and they have end of line and 'one off' buttons, usually cheap & I've got some lovely special ones for about 10c each which I thought was pretty good, I think garage sales & op shops are good too. (op shops are opportunity or good-will).

Buttons have been popular in scrapbooking since it became an "commercialized" hobby. Also, during the Victorian Age, handmade cards, especially Valentines, were often embellished with buttons.

They aren't new, they have just been commercialized......... Check your local thrift store, or garage sales, people used to remove the buttons from all clothing once it was no longer wearable, much in the way people used their old clothing for quilts. Everyone's grandma had a button box. I have found some beautiful vintage buttons at Goodwill and Estate Sales. They add a very original touch to your work you wont get with the plastic buttons available today. Its not unusual to find a sack of buttons at a thrift shop for a dollar, and if you like shabby chic or vintage, they are just perfect; plus these classy buttons keep your cards from looking like everyone else's.

Have fun with your buttons, Deborah!

I agree, Dawn. I know they've been around for a long time and are here to stay, but I think it's just become very popular right now. I bought the Foof a La ones from AC Moore (love the different assortment in there) and I also buy from PTI. I buy whatever appeals to me actually!!

Raise your hand if you have a junk drawer full of those extra buttons that come with your clothes! I don't know about y'all, but I rarely will replace a "lost" button . . . . it's almost painful to dig through and find the one that matches!

Why not use those, too?

*raises hand*

I always keep the extra buttons that come with a sweater for my crafting needs.

Thanks for the link! I have been on the hunt for a good source for buttons. This was perfect! I have several jars of assorted colors coming!

Why not use those, too?

I have a pile of those on my ironing board! I have it set up permanently in a spare room, and whenever I buy something new, I cut off the tags and leave the buttons on the board! Eventually they will make it into my button box! So both my hands are raised! LOL!

I love using buttons too. I have all of Papertrey's buttons and they're great because they coordinate with their cardstock, ribbon, and ink but also pretty much everything else I have. For $5 a bag I think they're a great deal and they look so nice on your shelf too! Check them out here: http://www.papertreyink.com/pm_buttons.html.

Papertrey also just came out with an awesome stamp set to use those buttons. Check it out here: http://www.papertreyink.com/stamps_e...uttonbits.html. I can't wait to get it!
