I am wondering if anyone has advice on what is the best paper trimmer? Right now I'm using the Fiskars one. I've been looking at those beauties in Michaels and AC Moore that cost a pretty penny (40-60 dollars). With a coupon I could get it for half price. Is it worth it? Anyone out there found one paper trimmer that's better than the others?
I am using a CARL cutter (12") and love it. It has a rotating blade, which is exchangeable, also the cuttting mat. And I find it great for measuring, it's very accurate! I got mine from Staples 3.5 years ago and I paid about $ 30 for it.
But I'm sure there are more great ones around... The ladies here will let you know!

I haven't had any problems with my Fiskars (I have 4 of the purple ones), but I do like the Tonic guillotine-type trimmers. I have the small one, and it's wonderful.
I recently got a Tonic from JoAnn's with a coupon. I made the mistake of taking it to school to use - the kids love it...I haven't had too much of a chance to use it. They give it high marks. I got to matboard on it for someone and it was great.
I have to say I LOVE it and I will never go back to a cutter that needs blade refills. I can't say enough about this cutter. SU sells it, in a different color, but for any of you in Canada the price is $20 cheaper at http://www.scrappingreatdeals.com/To...llery%20TS.htm She gives free shipping on orders over $100 so 3 of us went in together on an order. Even at SU prices I would still say I love this thing.
Well, after reading the blog..I think I'm going to pick up the Tonic. I hope my Joanne's has it here. I LOVE using those 50% off coupons! Thanks for the advice!
Does anyone have the Tonic Rotary trimmer? I really don't want a guillotine trimmer.
I recently bought the Fiskars rotary cutter with the metal track(it's $39.99---I used a 50% off coupon) and I really like it. It seems to cut straight so far. HTH!

You will not be sorry you bought the Tonic! I have several other brands/kinds collecting dust and NEVER used them again after I got the tonic. I should actually throw them away cause I'll never use them again. For scoring I have a Scor-IT board. You can use coupons on-line at Joanns.com They have them there. I haven't found them in the stores. I have the one like SU sells plus I got the mini 6" one. The mini is perfect for smaller stuff and for toting around to places. Also, the big 12" one is great if you have the space for it. I would have got the 12" one if I had the space for sure!! My daughter has it and it's great!!! You will love them all
So Excited! Thanks versamom for the advice of ordering online. I was able to use a $10.00 off coupon PLUS it was on sale. I was so excited I ordered one for my sister also. Online really helped me out - I recently broke my leg and sprained the other one - so I'm stuck at home. I hate to ask for others to run errands for me. Otherwise, I am loving that I'm able to stamp all day long! Not much else I can do!
Right now my favorite trimmer is the Making Memories trimmer that has a magnetic ruler. I bought it a couple of months ago at Michael's with a 40% off coupon. I still use my Cutterpede trimmers for quick things, but the MM one works SO nice! I've tried all of the Fiskars trimmers and have been disappointed by them. I've never tried the Carl, Tonic or Purple Cow trimmers.

YAY!! That's awesome that you got it. If I lived in the US and got in on sale with a coupon I would have bought 2 too!!! LOL. My SU demo was here last night to drop of my order and she tried it. I think she will be getting one. Mind you BE CAREFUL she did nick herself and bled. I didn't think that was possible the way it was made! It sounds like you don't need any more injury so be careful when you first try it.
Don't you wish someone told us all of this stuff before we bought and tried a million other things. Just think of the money we would have saved if we bought the right product first instead of my trial and error. Enjoy. Happy Saturday.
I have the making memories trimmer...I like the fact that the blade is self sharpening, a magnetic ruler to hold paper so that it doesn't shift. So far, so good. I have had Fiskars but have found that they dull quickly and sometimes cut crooked. Maybe that is just me.
I have the Fiskars rotary cutter, that I got at Costco for $25. I absolutely love it. Very accurate, I have had it for months and months and months (maybe even a year) and have yet to have to change out the blade. It is great--I highly recommend this one.
Please help! I know that SU sells two paper cutters. Which one is the tonic? Thanks for enlightening me!
Go to Page 184. It's the Table Top Cutter. It is black and grey whereas Tonic sells it in orange and gray. Unless you are a demo and want SU you can certainly find it for less on-line. HTH.
Which cutters are great for cutting little things? I frequently see testimonials for cutters that people say cut the CS for their workshops quickly, in large quantities.
Well, I don't need that. But I like to cut CS small for things, a lot, and have had my eye out for a new cutter for awhile.
I got a Fiskars from Costco several years ago, and it's just never cut quite square. I can usually deal with it, but it's a minor annoyance.

Just wanted to update... I picked up the making memories cutter with a 50% coupon at Mike's yesterday. It's great -- nice clean edges and easy to use. I'm so glad I got it!!!

Glad to hear you like it. I'm still waiting for my tonic trimmer to come UPS. But, if I don't like it, I'll try the Making Memories one. I have the Fiskars right now and it is hard to get a straight, clean edge!

You will love it, I just got mine after trying out a bunch of other cutters and its by far the best out of the bunch I tried.. I did try out the making memories one a while ago and it cut nicely it not straight for me. Maybe something wrong with that particular cutter, or maybe me but I LOVE my tonic!
don't waste your time or money...go straight to the Tonic guilltine cutter. I have the six inch base, and am doing fine. But I think if I were rebuying it, I would buy the 12 inch base....I would like the grid lines when cutting the bigger pieces.
I have owned my Tonic guilltine cutter for 3 years, done thousands of cuts, and the blade (original) is still as sharp as the day I bought it. When I bought it, the store lady told me that it takes the top and bottom blade together to make the cut....so a child isn't going to cut their finger off in this guilltine cutter. Also when the two blades cut, they actually sharpen each other with each cut.
SU is now selling the Tonic small base cutter. I've ordered one for a friend, and had to have them ship me three replacements before I got one that had good blades. Don't know what the problem was. If you get yours from SU, expect a clean, crisp cut EVERY time.
Also, you can cut 2-3 pieces of SU cardstock at a time on that cutter.
It has a plastic guard by the blade. Be sure to push down on the guard, so that your paper is held securely in place while you bring down the cutting arm. It's really a pleasure to work with...and great results...and not expensive. I went through more Fiskars blades in a month, than the cost of this cutter.
I second everything the last 2 ladies said. I have only had mine for a couple of weeks but I will never go back to using any other kind. Tonic is the BEST BEST BEST!!! I can't wait for you, kjpp, to get yours and find out whatcha think!!!

Thanks so much Charlene for linking my blog entry! I love my Tonic guillotine cutter and just found this thread.

She bled?! Ouch! I wonder how she did it! I actually tried putting my hand in there to see what would happen...i didn't even get a scratch. I must qualify this...I have small boys and wanted to make sure it would be safe for me to have in the house. (the tonic guillotine that is)
I use the Fiskars cause is just so light and handy having the score right on it too....I hate how it tends to cut slightly off but....Finally Fiskars has just came out with a new one and has right on the front of the package it cuts a straight line everytime....so I will be getting it next....
Woohhhoooo! I just checked by tracking number. The tonic is due to get to my house on the 7th! I really can't wait to try it. I'll let you know how it does. Thanks for all the information.

I LOVE my Tonic cutter. I have the Carl's and have used the Fiskars and this one really cuts straight. I ordered mine online for $37.00 - didn't know that they were available at JoAnn's. I have the 12 x 12 bed guillotine and it works great. Another wonderful thing about this company is I was having a problem with the blade hitting something on its way down, so I called the company I purchased it from and she directed me to the company which is located in Middleton, Wisconsin. What a wonderful company. The gentleman heard my complaint and sent me a new one, no questions asked, AND he told me to keep the old one and take it apart for extra parts. I thought that this company was located both in England and here, but it appears that they have totally relocated to America. I cut paper for 110 CHRISTmas cards and they were straight and wonderful. Coupled together with my Scor-It I'm in business and happy as a clam!

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I just can't get my rotary trimmer to cut through. I've tried "everything" including a new blade and adjusting the rubber thingy but no luck. My favorite is the Fiskars double hold (not sure what you call that style of blade). It holds the ruler together as you slide the blade so you don't get an uneven cut. Sometimes old fashion is best. Might try the Tonic next though, sounds interesting.
I have tried 4-5 different kinds and I love my Fiskars Rotary Cutter. It cuts straight and accurate. I got a small Carl and sometimes it is as wonky as the regular Fiskars. Have not tried the Tonic but am happy with what I have.
I absolutely LOVE my Purple Cow!! I have the guillotine / rotary cutter combo and use the guillotine a LOT! VERY stable!
Have an Elmers / Exacto cutter too - never could get perfectly straight cuts with it and the circle cutter was a total waste of time! Also don't much care for the free hand rotary blade. I use an Olfa rotary cutting tool when I need a free hand cutter for paper (labeled as "paper only" to keep from accidentally using it to cut fabric).
Also have a small Creative Memories guillotine cutter that I use for small (1" or less) cuts as the Purple Cow doesn't manage those well. sab

I have a Purple Cow too and love the way it cuts, but I'm having trouble locating replacement blades. I've emailed the company directly and get NO response. Where do you get your replacement blades?
I own many Fiskars trimmers and whenever I have had a problem I contact their customer service department. They are awesome. Why do I choose Fiskars over Tonic or Carl? The customer service. They did not stop helping me until I was satisfied and had a trimmer that worked for me. I only know of a few companies that still put customers first and Fiskars happens to be my favorite one.
I had a problem with a dull blade and it was replaced without any questions.
OK off of my soapbox. The number you can call if you have any problems with a Fiskars product at all is 1-866-348-5661.
