Pan Pastels -which set to choose

Can anyone suggest which set of 20 Pan Pastels would be the best to get?
I first thought the landscape set would be best
21934-2209 - PanPastel Artists' Painting Pastels Sets - BLICK art materials

then I thought there were too many light colors and went looking again, found the Shades set
21934-2049 - PanPastel Artists' Painting Pastels Sets - BLICK art materials which seems to be having less of the light colors. But maybe I would use the lighter colors more?

Now I am just going back and forth and can't decide. I have never
used these before so I have no idea how vivid the colors are when applied, do they actually turn out just the way they look or are they more subtle? I would be using them mostly for creating scenery cards...

Or should I get them as singles? If so, which colors would you suggest I get?

Hi Ellie, I have all of the sets, and definitely use the brights pure painting pigment set (your 1st link) most frequently. All colors aside from the metallics can be achieved with this set. Hope this helps.

So do you mean you can mix these to get more colors? Is that what the white is for? I was wondering how you would use a white pastel. Sorry if my questions sound ignorant, I have never used any pastels besides the SU chalk pastels, and I know those are something completely different (at least I think they are different).

I had the same questions when I purchased mine, and didn't research! They blend very easily, because of their fineness, making it very easy to blend colors by simply picking up colors you want to blend on their special sponges, I even use a fine paintbrush or makeup sponges. The other sets I purchased are basically varying blends achieved from blending white, black, or paynes gray. I could have saved a lot of money if I had done the research, happy I am able to help.
