The lighting in my new stamp room is horrible. I have heard wonderful things about the OTT lights. Do you have one? Do you love it? Do I need it? Is yours a table mount or a floor one?
Please overload me with any and all info before I go blind in this room! ;)
Thanks girlies......Shani:mrgreen:
Yes, OTT light or any daylight spectrum lights help immensely when you're working with colors. We have day-spectrum lights mounted on top of the cabinets in computer/stamp room that bounce light off the white ceiling for inderect lighting. Then, on my stamping desk, I have a table OTT light with a gooseneck for task lighting.
If I look at the colors in regular lamp light, you can see the difference it makes. There is a display of the different light effects at Lowes or Home Depot for comparison of light spectrums. You can buy daylight spectrum bulbs/tubes to put in your regular fixtures.
In conclusion, YES, you need it!

You definitely NEED one! This is indeed a hard thing to admit too - but being over 40 - well the eyes go! LOL I ordered one and have it set on my computer/secondary stamp area table and the difference it makes is astounding!!! The color's really look more "brilliant" or "true" and I can actually see the fine details (with my reading glasses in place as well of course). I have the one that you can clamp or set on your table - I just set it in the corner and use the little "gizmo" that allows you to rotate and "crank" on it to get it into the position I need. If you need more flexibility as to positioning the floor lamp may come in handy. Fortunately over my main work area I installed a halogen light system and it has done wonders for my ability to see the details at night! So YES - I highly recommend it!!
QVC sells some true spectrum lamps, too. The difference between true spectrum & regular incandescent lights is truly amazing! Especially for "older" eyes!
I have 3 different true light lamps (all desktop), one is an OTT. They are all very good, and once you use one, you can't be without it. My favorite one is the 'touch' one - no switch or anything.
I am 44 and all of sudden I needed an OTT light too!!! It is invaluable when coloring images! I have the clamp onto the table type model. If I was rich I would get a couple more of the floor models just to have in my stamp room. I got mine at Joann's when the were half off....the table model is not too expensive.....I think it is a must buy...really makes life easier!
I asked for an OTT light for my bday in May. However, when DH and I went to make the purchase as Joann Etc. (they had some on sale), I was disappointed in the limited styles and their extremely high prices. Additionally, for the price, we didn't like the plastic manufacturing of the fixtures themselves. I wanted a full spectrum light desperately and so I set out and did quite a bit of research on the internet. I ended up purchasing mine via the internet from here: http://www.fullspectrumsolutions.com/
They show a number of comparisons on their site including the OTT. (Of course) theirs seemed to be the best choice. I ended up with the blue max tabletop with dimmer in nickel. It was less expensive than the OTT would have been even on sale and it seems very well made. And, believe it or not, I love that dimmer switch even though I thought I had no use for it whatsoever. Bottom line, I love my full spectrum light. I'd definitely recommend one. I would also recommend this brand and web site. HTH!
Shanon, the difference is the wattage. 36 (ultralux) versus 70 (blue max). And to be honest, now that I take a better look at the site, I am now a little confused about what I actually bought. I think it might HAVE been the ultralux at 36 watts, because I don't recall paying the higher price. I also vaguely remember that the 36 watts was still more than the OTT lamp I was considering. I still have the box and will double check at home tonight for you.
If I am correct and did get the Ultralux, $99 is a GREAT price! Like I said, I'll double check for you.
Thanks so much Kim. I look forward to hearing back from you!

hmmmmmmm....never thought of Costco. I have one about a mile away!
Go see if they have one - it was a great price!! (The replacement bulbs are *expensive* for them I think - but I've been told they last a loooonnnggg time - I've had my OTT Light well over a year and use it every day - I'm thinking it's gonna last a long time before I need to even think about getting a new bulb!)
Does anyone know If I can get one in 220v. I am going back overseas in a year and I don't want to pay that much money for something I won't ba able to use.

You should be able to just buy a transformer to use it overseas I would think. The transformers work on basically any electrical equipment including my husbands C-pap machine he uses for sleep apnea when we traveled to Thailand.
Shannon, I've had my desk model for about 8 years now and have yet to need to change the bulb. I LOVE mine because it takes up almost no room on the desk, and I can move it around to anywhere I want. It's lightweight enough to lift with one finger, lol! I would love to get a floor model for my living room since I do a lot of reading there, and more table lamps for my craft room. For now, though, the desk one I have is great!
I have one of these little treasures and I must agree with Ellen, for "over 40" eyes" the OTT light is just the thing. Mine is a small desktop model, kind of utilitarian looking, but it really works great. I got mine at Lowe's and I think I spent $19.99.
The other thing I like about it, is it stays cool. I had a humongous 100 watt light bulb I was using before and after a few minutes I was roasting!
I purchased a Son Lite from Sams . Mine is a desk top model with a head and arm that you can swival. For the money I think it is great. I think it was around $25.00 or so. Also at our Big Lot they had some floor models that they called close outs for $29.00
I am not a professional artist and I feel that to spend all the money that they want for the Ott is too much . My room is a deep tan and all my cards looked yellow or brown. The desk lamp made the difference.

I could put it on a transformer but over time a transformer could kill it. I had a few appliances that worked fine when we were there the first time but when we brought them back to the states and plugged them in they didn't work. With regular lamps all you need to do is the change the bulb and put an adapter on it. However, with a lamp this expensive I would rather just have a 220v, it lessens the chance of really regretting spending that kind of money.

I have to admit, I truly LOVE my OTT Light. I have the portable desk lamp - the only where the top folds up and down. It's wonderful. Cuts down on eye strain and allows me to work effeciently with color. Have you ever done a card or scrapbook page at night, only to get up the in morning and find the colors don't REALLY work? Because your lighting skewed the color. Doesn't happen with the ott light.
I also have a full spectrum light by Bell& Howell. My mother gave it to me. She ordered it out of the Sunday newspaper - the magazine section (can't remember what it's called). It works every bit as well as the ott light, at half the cost.
Shanon ~ thanks for asking this question I was just wondering the same thing. I did find a couple at Lowe's that I liked......Now I think I will check Sam's and Big Lots first!

Joann's carries the Ott lite...I got mine w/ a 50% off coupon online and you can also get the bulbs w/ coupon if you ever need a replacement. I love the floor model I purchased.
Yes, I have an Ott light and I love it! I use it for stamping, but also for cross stitching and sewing. Anything where there is any kind of detail. Mine is a table lamp and you can usually get them at 1/2 off at JoAnn's. Although, a friend of mine told me that she got a regular floor lamp and bought her own daylight/true light light bulbs. I think that they were expensive, but an Ott light can get that way, too.

Shanon, I checked for you and I did buy the UltraLux, 36 watt.
I got the desktop Ott lite with the gooseneck and love it. It is small enough to take with on stamping retreats or to a friend's house. A floor lamp would be nice if you didn't want to give up space on your desk.
I chose the Ott lite, because the replacement bulbs seem relatively easy to find without having to pay for shipping on mail order.
My OTT light was one of the best purchases I've ever made. I can't believe what a huge difference it made. I've had mine for 6 years now and I can't live without it!
Just so y'all know, I was looking at the new Joann's ad (I think it starts Aug 5?) and they're going to have a bunch of their lighting on sale for 50% off, including the OTT and other sprectrum lights. The ad is not up on their website yet, unfortunately, but I thought I'd give y'all the heads up.
