Default MISTI Magnets in BAR Form

When you need to replace your MISTI Magnets, buy the neodymium bars instead of the discs. I have the 3" X 1/2" X 1/8" (be sure your replacement is 1/8" thickness); I got them from A & J Magnetics. Because of the larger area, you'll probably only need to use one, but take care because they're much stronger than the discs.

Frankly, I got tired of stopping at every Home Depot I ran across only to find an empty spot where the magnets were supposed to be. And tired of customer service looking at me like I had 3 heads when I asked for neodymium magnets.

Such a smart idea!!!! I have been frustrated by the way round magnets allow the paper to twist underneath them. The bar would totally elimate that annoying problem! Thanks for sharing the idea.

Would you be so kind as to provide a link? I did a search for A & J Magnets and all I could find was K & J Magnets.

Amazon had some bar magnets that were 1/8" thick that were 15.99....sounded pricey to me.

I definitely want to get some of these. I'm hoping to find them at a good price so I can justify ditching all those circle magnets I have.

Linda, have you used yours yet? Being so large that would be one strong magnet. : )

Is it this one? https://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=BZ082

I might get a couple a little smaller, maybe 2" x 3/8" x 1/8":
https://www.kjmagnetics.com/products.asp?cat=11&pg=13
But given that I often don't use magnets, or use one, maybe not.

The safety aka let's-be-careful-out-there page is impressive: https://www.kjmagnetics.com/safety.asp

I found a pack of three magnets on Amazon for $14.57 (free shipping if you have Prime). I did a search using the following:

3’’ x 1/2’’ x 1/8'' Grade N45 Rare Earth Magnets Strong Neodymium Block Magnet

It is K & J Magnetics, and I ordered the 2" long; the item # is BY082. I must have been half asleep when I posted this, and since the time shows I posted at 2:24 this morning, I'll use that as my excuse!

Suzy, these are only $4.21 each, so much cheaper than what you found at Amazon. And I'm keeping my disc magnets to use in conjunction with the bars, if needed.

I have an oblong metal container; I added 3 of the disc magnets to the bottom. Then I just drop my dies in the container if I will be using them again soon. Easy to keep them all corralled!

Thank You So Much! Your tip is the top #1 tip of the year, IMHO. I received my magnets, ordered the 3 pack 3"x1/2"x1/8". One magnet is all that is needed now! It's terrific not having to worry about magnets sticking together, and it does hold my paper securely as you said it would. Thanks again for sharing!

Linda, thanks for the info. I'll order later tonight. K&J won't know what hit them when all these orders start to come in!

I think you should let Iliana know what you found. Maybe she can switch over for all new MISTI's.

we hardly ever buy anything local unless it is in a locally owned store so we have amazon prime and the 2 day shipping is free. well, there is a yearly fee of $90? but we buy everything from an exhaust system for the car to literally an eraser, so it more than pays for itself. hmmm. i think they should pay me for advertising.

Right under shipping with UPS, there's an option to compare shipping. Check the USPS option. Mine was $5.

The shipping to CA is more than the 3 magnets. Exploitation, unless they weigh alot. I canceled my order because $26 plus doesn't make them that much better than the ones that came with Misti, unless you have more income than I. Maybe the packaging is different because of them being magnets, so I just need to know if the shipping price is fair.

Free shipping of the same magnets on Amazon Prime, if you have Prime, that is. And you can buy just 1 or 2 magnets, like on the website. If you don't have Prime, you still might want to see what shipping is on Amazon.

Since Amazon recognizes me as Prime I couldn't check shipping or would have.

Sorry, I just saw the option to pay $5 shipping, so I ordered, thanks to all who responded on this thread. I hope to end the pinching of my fingers since I could not seem to keep those disc magnets separated.

I saw a tip to put a piece of washi tape around the disc and leave a little tag on the end for you to grab on to.....works like a dream to separate them and pick them up!!!

OK kids when they say they may pinch fingers they mean it. I was being so careful. Wow! What do think their intended use was before crafters got the idea?

Yes they do! I love the bar because only one is needed, so once you get them out of the box pinching is virtually eliminated I've found. You've hit the nail on the head, these magnets are much stronger than the round ones!

I've found I really don't have to pick them up to insert my paper, I just kind of slide or wiggle it off the cardstock and onto the new cardstock. If I want to move the paper around, I slide and wiggle the cardstock without removing the magnet that's already on the cardstock.

I keep a laminated grid sheet under the black foam, making it easy to change to soft mount stamps. I've found I can pick up the laminated sheet by the corner to help get hold of the magnet to replace the black foam. In hindsight just a plain acrylic sheet or an empty laminated sheet would probably serve the same purpose. I use the laminated sheet against the base so I don't discolor the built in grid, it's worked well for me for quiet a few years now. I continue to use the regular grid sheets for on top of the foam, because I like them.

Hope this is helpful and makes sense

It's only $5.00 shipping if you click the drop down menu and choose USPS instead of UPS.

Ditto. I like how it was protected in the bubble wrap envelope - in a tiny, hard cardboard tube. I had wondered about that. Occasionally Ammy packaging leaves something to be desired.

Just how difficult are these to move around? I love the idea, but I don't have a lot of hand strength and the thought of trying to 'fight' the magnet is not appealing.

I went with Amazon and ordered 2--- agree with bjean about the packaging-- very cool that they came in hard cardboard rolls;I guess it helps to separate the magnets! Can you imagine working in the magnet factory- ouch my poor fingers!!! They are super strong! Thanks everyone for the info and the tip about the lower shipping ( I almost fainted when I originally saw $12!- spoiled by Prime!)

I one of Jennifer McGuire's recent tutorials, she recommended the bar magnet.

If you only need to use 1, I might order some. I (have a regular and a mini) I DID pinch my finger once and got a blood blister.

Thanks for the link.

I purchased these bar magnets on Amazon. Boy! Let me tell you... they are some STRONG suckers! Even with the plastic bar that comes in between them when they ship, it was HARD to get them apart! Got out the washi tape, made my little tags and voila' .... Boom! Done!

it does help if you slide them apart and not try to pull them apart.

If you only need to use 1, I might order some. I (have a regular and a mini) I DID pinch my finger once and got a blood blister.

Thanks for the link.
Even with two round magnets my cardstock moved, but with only one bar magnet even 140# watercolor paper is solidly held in place. I don't think you'll be disappointed, and will love not having to worry about two jumping together.

Default DIY Bar magnet

I want one of the bar magnets but made a DIY version first: I took three round magnets, placed them carefully side by side then put washi tape on the top and bottom of them, with a tail on each side. I'm attaching a picture. It seems to work pretty well. Just another option for folks. (I also made a smaller version with two magnets)

If anyone finds the bars in a brick and mortar store, please post where. Thanks!

Amazon sells the CMS Magnetics magnets. I went to the CMS website, and the prices were significantly lower. There are three 2" ones, N42, N45, and N52. They're all under $2 each. The 3" N45 one, like in the Amazon link, is $2.79. I put 4 of the 2" in my cart, and the shipping was $4.12. This seems like a good deal.
