McGill Craft punch
Hi all,
I was given a mcgill craft punch for christmas, specifically, this one the problem I am having is, it refuses to cut through anything with ease... it even struggles a bit with copy paper... I noticed on their website it says (the punch is) "easy and fun to use." I haven't been able to have a lot of fun with it, because, to get it to punch anything, I have to put it on the floor and put most of my (considerable) weight on it.... I believe it was bought through a catalogue company here in australia. Does anyone have any suggestions on ways to get it to punch easier? or have i got a faulty one and should return it?
thanks in advance

I had the same problem with McGill punches. I was so frustrated I was ready to toss them out. Then I bought a Punch aid and now they work like a dream. They will easily punch through SU card stock. There are several brands of punch aids . Some are quite expensive and others are very reasonably priced. If you have several button style punches it is worth the investment to buy a punch aid.
There was a thread on them a while back, I just don't know how to find it. Hopefully someone can provide a link to the thread discussing punch aids

Mine wasn't a McGill punch. I bought the large edge punch 2 days ago at Michael's. When I went to use it, it didn't work. You couldn't slide the punch to continue cutting the edge and it was hard to punch it through the paper. I used thin cardstock so it wasn't the paper. When I returned it the next day the sales girl said alot of people have been returning these particular EK Success punches. So, just a heads up. My other EK punches work fine but apparently there's a problem with the large edge punches.

Just looked at the punch you received. Too bad it doesn't work. The butterfly is really nice. I think Michael's carries that brand. If you have one in your area check them out to see if they have that punch and maybe they will give you a store credit.

unfortunately, I live in Australia, so we don't have Michaels anywhere. It was a gift from my nan for christmas. I believe she bought it from a craft catalogue. I have contacted her to see if she can get a refund on it....

You could also call McGill and they might exchange it for you or give you a fix for it.

I've looked into it, its not actually viable, as the only office they seem to have is in the US

I have 1 McGill punch--the one with 3 different "word windows". It has never worked correctly--I have to stand on it to get it to punch card stock. I've heard that letting it sit in the freezer will help. Never tried that.

Is yours a button punch one or a lever???
We have recently switched all of our button punches over to lever. We are still waiting on a few to get into stock but I will check on this one.
The reason we switched over to lever is because we were having some issues with the button punch punches. Plus the levers are so much easier to use.
Anyway I will get back with you on this punch tomorrow.

I have the retro word tag punch and the petite petals flowers punch and they are too hard to use. The only way I can get them to work is by using thin paper and stepping on the punch to get them to punch out. I like the new flowers ones - I hope they work better than the ones I have.

I received my replacement punch today, only a little over a week after McGill found this thread. I have used the punch, it is MUCH easier to use, and I hope to continue using it for a while to come. I'd like to say Kudos to McGill for super customer service, and a big thanks to Elisa K for her help

love them
I love most of the new style punches I got from McGill. The old style, I had to return some since I could not even punch printer paper with them. If the second punch did not work, I went to a different Michaels and replaced it. So far that has worked.
The one draw back with going to a different Michaels is the punches were priced differently and which made the line back up until the CLERKS figured out how to override the price differents. I had the paperwork from the first Michaels and it was 5 hours later. The nonpunching punch was brought about 10 am and return about 3 pm. I got a new punch that worked. The new 3 1/2 teal circle punch is great.

Wow you got that fast... Not bad for shipping to Australia from the States. I am so glad that this punch is much easier to use. I would love to see your projects that you create with them. Be sure to link them to our blog by leaving a comment with a link.

Sue Eldred is one of the McGill designers and does fabulous videos etc. You can get to her blog from the McGill Blog.. McGill Blog
She just had to redo her blog as it got hacked or something so she is in the process of getting things back to normal on it.
