Default Matchbox die

How much is the die? Also does thicker cardstock work or should it be fairly thin?

It's $42.95.

It's a steel rule die, so you can cut just about anything with it. I cut the base out of Bazzill cardstock and the "wrapper" out of the clear plastic material that things like the Cricut cartridges come blister wrapped in, KWIM? It's SUPER thick acetate and it cut just fine. The score lines were very faint so I used a Scorpal to help with those, but it cut just fine.

I *LOVE* this die!

It's $42.95 (It's one of the XL ones) and it will cut any of the approved materials for steel rule dies, which can be pretty thick!

Oops! Same time, Deb!

I was wondering if this is a Stampin Up exclusive or if it could be found on sale somewhere else. Anyone know?

I am pretty sure it is SU exclusive.

I love mine too- I ordered the "window pane" acetate from the mini since it seems that was what they used in the sample in the catalog, but the big shot only cut the outside shape, it didn't make any score lines in the pattern, which you really need to make folding it go smoothly. Maybe next time I should put some regular cardstock underneath when I am trying to cut acetate for the top.

MSBetsyZ I really haven't been around a whole ton but I still lurk when I can. I'm in my senior year of veterinary school and often put in between 50-70 hours per week depending on what the clinical rotation is. I also haven't had any vacation time in my schedule. This term I will temporarily have a lull so hopefully I can get some more crafting in. I have a rather ambitious project at the moment as a thank you for those who have had a hand in my veterinary career that I want to get done for graduation and the matchbox die would hold the gift which is a phone lanyard with a handmade torchwork bead that is in the school colors with a pawprint. It's hard to describe and I am going to have to make a zillion of them cause there are so many people that have helped with my education.

Aimee hmmm that sounds like a good idea. Did it work? I'm super curious because I do have a score-pal but it would be nicer if the measurements were already at least visible. I'm so lazy when it comes to measuring things for myself. >.>

Anyone know if it will work in the cuttlebug? I'm a new demo and don't have the big shot yet but I'd like the have this die to at least make hostess gifts and for my personal use. So just wondering if it will work in the CB and what extras I would need to make it work and what the sammy would be...thanks ladies!

The matchbox holds 4 nugget candies. I love mine but was disappointed in the score lines. it was very hard for me to see them and I just used designer paper. And I got no score lines on the acetate top that I made. I made little treat boxes for my daughter's cheer team as they go to state. I'll try to get some pics up. I will be using these for favor boxes for her graduation party. I tend to be pretty slow so Im going to start soon.
thanks, Maria

I think the score lines will be better with a shim(s) underneath and the Extended crease pad on top (which hopefully will be available soon!!!)

Here's a link to the Occassion Mini where you view the matchbox die

In addition, here are a few things I've done with the new die.

It should...you'll just need to use either 2 B plates end-to-end on the top and bottom, or cut a little bit (like 1/8") off the edges of the Big Shot Extended plates, as the plates are just a bit too wide.

Hey sorry it took me so long to make my way back to this thread

I have a score pal too, but in this circumstance, I am not sure it would do any good. The score lines on the acetate were just plain non existent after being run through the big shot, so there isn't even a faint line to use for reference. I guess you could figure out the exact measurements of the matchbox top and do all the score lines manually, but that kind of defeats the purpose of using the die in the first place.

I hope you find the solution you're looking for. If you do, post it here so I can figure it out too. Thanks!

Oh my gosh Colleen you aren't helping my "need" for this die. I love the swirly acetate one! So the question is how hard was it to see the folds on the acetate or what did you do to make it easy to see them?

Do you need the longer plate in order to get this die to work? And is it just the thinner one that they put out or is it SU exclusive?

You do need the longer plates. The die is SU exclusive, but not the plates. The acetate you really need a shim under the die and the extended crease pad on top. SU also sells that, but I believe you can get the extended crease pad elsewhere.

Kelly has a great matchbox tutorial on this site http://flutterbyatomicbutterfly.blog...-tutorial.html

I don't know if I did this link right - my first time to insert a link. If not its flutterbyatomicbutterfly.blogspot.com/2009/02/matchbook-box-tutorial.html

This doesn't use the die but it is a wonderful little box and a great tutorial and it doesn't cost $42.95

Ladies, you do NOT need to spend $42.95 for a one size matchbox die plus $19.95 for the extended premium crease pad. (Maybe you can find the crease pad elsewhere and get it with a coupon.)

There are tons of templates on the web that you can adjust to the size you need:

http://www.ruthannzaroff.com/mirkwoo...s/matchbox.htm

http://www.cara4webshopping.com/free...n/matchbox.htm

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ahyingmui/2297058848/ (drawer)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ahyingm...n/photostream/ (cover)

http://blog.swap-bot.com/rachels-matchbox-template/

http://dearlydee.blogspot.com/2008/0...-template.html

Ideas for using them:
http://www.marthastewart.com/article...dvent-calendar
even has directions

Who has that kind of money to blow these days? Use that money for more versatile things like the Stampin' Up designer paper and cardstock (to make your matchboxes), stamps and tons of other great stuff.

No, you definitely don't "need" to...but when you are doing 300 wedding favors, it sure is nice to not have to cut and score by hand! As with any purchase, each individual can decide for his/herself the value of the item for their needs.

I could be wrong on the exclusivity of this die to SU, so if I am jump in.

the mini catalogue does not list this with the words "stampin up" in front of the name, like all the other exclusive SU sizzix dies. So I did some internet browsing and saw that someone said that SU has been given an "advance" on this die. So at present the only place you can get it from is SU, but I got the impression that Sizzix will make it available eventually.

I don't have the link but I know it was not Sizzix and not SU who described it this way, so take it for what it is worth.

Love the die. I would not try and use it in a cuttlebug, however if you go to the tools section of this site and look up the big shot FAQs, folks describe how to use the BixZ XL dies in a cuttlebug. That FAQ rocks!

I have heard this as well. I think someone said late summer/fall before it's available other than through SU. And since I wanted it now, I bought it from SU. LOL~

And if I remember correctly, this die is black. I believe that SU exclusive dies are gray. My Top Note die is gray.

I ran it through my Big Shot with the suggested sandwich and did not need a scor-pal. (I don't have a Scor-pal but may take advantage of their free shipping this month)

In the mini, this die has a little heart symbol next to it meaning that it's a "Shelli's Signature" item -- I doubt she'd put her personal stamp on something that wasn't a Stampin' Up! exclusive product! Not having SU! in the name could just be a typo.

stricklandpm I appreciate your concern but I'm making phone charms for everyone that has helped me learn in vet school and that's going to be well over 100 individuals. Hand making the boxes might be a bit much after doing the torchwork for the beads.

It is an SU! exclusive die. The die has the SU! logo on it, not the Sizzix logo. All of the dies that are not exclusive to SU! have the Sizzix logo on them.

The dies that are only available from SU! for a short time before being sold esle where are the pop-up dies.
