I use a ruler and draw a faint line on the back of the paper with a pencil. Hope this helps.

I know this doesnt really answer your question, but I've never had any luck with any of the shaped scissors. It's just very difficult to get a clean looking line.

Your best bet if you want a scalloped edge is to use something like the SU! Corner Rounder punch (take the guard off) or I think Fiskars just came out with a new scalloped edge punch.

HTH!

I have the Fiskars Scalloped edge scissors and I just cut my paper with about a little extra and just cut along the edge. It usually comes out really straight every time.

Fiskars new six inch punch is called Threading Water. A scalloped edge.

I cut my paper just slightly wider than what I want the final size to be, then I slowly cut near the edge with my scalloped (or other deco-edge) scissors. Just take your time.

subscribing... I have a lot of trouble with a straight cut with my scalloped scissors... have order the treading water punch -and the SU corner has it's limitations as far as I can see ( say if you are backing a panelled sketch and have a white background - full size piece of paper - then the corner rounder punch doesn't work so well!!!

Thanks for any and all ideas..one day... when I feel richer - nesties..............

I either draw a faint line or use the edge as a guide. Never really had a problem with them coming out crooked. Make sure after you make one cut to line up the crests and troughs with the next one. I really love my scissors and find them easier to use than border punches. They're easier on my hands, too.

Is the new border punch for cardstock though? I know some of their other border punches do work very well at all on cardstock only designer paper or something really thin.

Oh I have never tried that before. I'm going to go take it apart right now! You do mean the Corner rounder, not the slit punch right?

Lightbulb Draw a line

I too draw a line and cut along that. Two things that never help me:
  1. Trying to cut without a line - never gives me a straight line.
  2. Trying to hurry up the process - I always end up regretting.

Have to say I go along with cutting the paper a bit longer, then taking extra care and just cutting along the edge. 99% of the time I get a straight line.

I can't seem to ever get a straight line, so I just ended up buying a paper cutter from Marvy and I ordered all the different blades...so now no prob! I paid about $70.00 for the cutter and about 7 or 8 different blades and that also included the shipping!

yep! I just uploaded a card to my gallery using the corner rounder punch to do just this. Here is the card:

Also, here is a tutorial that shows you how. There are also some video tutorials out there as well.

Good Luck!

Here's a few other tips:

Don't cut with the scissor to the end of the edge of the scissors, like you do with a straight edge scissors. In other words, on the first cut, cut into the paper halfway through (to the end of the 2nd scallop shape, for instance). Then open your scissors and carefully realign the design and repeat. Clear as mud?

Also, give yourself some room on the right handed side of the paper you are cutting or the scissors don't seem to have enough resistance to make a good clean cut. Don't cut right on the edge of the paper - it's a sure recipe for frayed edges and frustration... trust me!

Good luck and keep practicing! I LOVE using my decorative scissors!

I've heard that the Fiskars scalloped scissors are the best- but, I use my Carl Cutters scalloped blade. it's a bit smaller of a scallop, but works extemely well through all weight of papers.

I don't have a lot of luck with the scissors either, except for the deckle edge ones, those are hard to screw up. I can't find any Fiskars decorative scissors that aren't sold in a package of 6 for $25! I just want the scalloped ones, not all of them. The Provocraft ones don't work very well at all, in my opinion.
