Default How many Copics do I need to be happy??

Ok...just jumped on the Copic-wagon and bought 30 last week.

Played a little and just ordered 20 more. Now I am looking at my charts and coloring some more...and I have a list of a dozen I think I still need.

Will this never end until I have them ALL?? Or is there a number you hit when you don't feel like you *need* another color??

Please tell me I don't have to have 322 of these things before I am happy!!

I'd be wondering the same thing. I decided to ask my mother in law for the complete set of prismacolor markers for Christmas and she's going to get them. I am hoping to love them and avoid the Copic bandwagon, that is so so tempting!

I'm feeling the same way. I was looking at what it would cost me to buy all of the Copic's and the total I came up with is over $1200 and that is before shiping and duty. I know that I would really like to have more, I have 30 now, but I am not sure what colors I really need, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, I think you will need them all! I don't have them all but I am doing just what you are doing-buying and then buying more! The cool thing is if you have some grey colors they allow you to change the color without needing another marker!
Good luck, Jodi

Hmmmmmmmmmmm well, as in all stamping/crafting areas... is there ever enough? Having said that.... I started with a few grays, reds, pinks, yellows, greens, blues, violets... and then I added to them. I have several and I am sure there are colors I "need".... but they blend so well, I am ok with what I have.
I'm on a budget, so it is what it is...
I get the CIAO's for $2.99 each. It's a great price.

Perception is a person's reality. I believe I need all 322, so therefore I do. LOL.

Have fun collecting them!

Of course the difference in dollars brings us to the difference in the markers.

I'm so confused between getting the ciao's or the sketches.

I'm not sure which one's to get. I've read comments about both. I guess the best thing to do would be to buy a few of each type and try them.

I can share with you that the sketch markers hold much more ink that the ciaos. Also, the sketch markers have 322 colors available, whereas the ciaos have less colors available.

All of them! Just kidding .... but really, you just have to see what kinds of things you color most. I feel pretty satisfied right now, and I probably have 65 or so, accumulated over time. I don't use dark colors much, so I have only a few of those. What really will get you is that if you use them a lot, you will end up needing refills for them. While the refills go a long way, it's like $5 or $6 for each one, so add that up, too! I have stopped buying the markers so I can work on my refill collections.

Well this is not looking good....the answer I was hoping for was maybe 50 was perfect? LOL

As to the one question up there on Sketch vs Ciao...I just started and chose the Sketch for two reasons: #1 - Labels on the ends work for my storage and #2 - I color less than many people and the Sketch hold more ink...backwards? No...because I am not buying refills for these. I hope...

Anyone know how much Sketch are at Hobby Lobby?? There is one in a city where my hubby has to work once a month...I could tell him I prefer a boquet of Copics on his way home instead of flowers. Then it looks like HE is spending...haha.

I have about 110 and am very happy with what I have. I studied for a long time before I started getting them. I would recommend getting a chart to keep tabs on your purchases and bookmark Marianne Walker's wonderful blog Her advice is worth so much and she shows you how to make do with a small amount of markers. This is the best blog out there, IMHO for Copics

Good Luck in whatever you decide is best for you. I know for me, I was always afraid to color until Copics.

Well, guess I'm missing something but there's no source to my knowledge in my 'neck of the woods' that sells Copics and I'm proud to say I'm happy and own ZERO Copics! Life does go on without them.

I have 93 Sketch right now and I'm working very hard to stay away from the oozak site. They sell them for $3.80 each. I haven't priced the refills there yet. Guess that's what I need to get next since I just bought the airbrush system and I've heard it uses up the markers pretty quickly. I absolutely love my Sketch markers and have pretty much retired my SU markers to a shelf.

I have around 130 and I'm getting quite close to being able to do what I want with my colors. I'm thinking around 25 more and I'll be done. I've been buying around 25 at a time from MerriArtist. I'm just in love with my Copics.

I have between 90 and 100 (lost count) and have a list of AT LEAST 30 or 40 more that I want. I generally buy ~$50 worth at a time from oozak.com when they restock some of the colors that I want. So about 1/2 the order is fill-ins for what I currently have and then the other half is 2 new color shades of 3 markers each to blend, KWIM?

But I haven't ordered in quite a while since I'm saving my pennies for my first SU demo order. Once that's done, I'll be back to my Copic addiction, full steam ahead.

But I must say that my Copics are used ALL THE TIME which I can't say for most of my craft purchases.

Make a sample chart on the paper you will be using. It does make a difference. The color indicated on the marker is not exact. These are artist markers, so there are many colors that are extremely close. You may not see the difference. The only way to know for sure is make a test on your paper....or go with someone who has done the research and put the sets together.

The charts are very helpful...I printed all of the following before I started buying:

This first one is awesome because I cross off what I have, and you can see on the wheel which ones are nearly identical. I don't think I would ever need the ones that are right next to each other.

http://copicmarker.com/updated%20col...%20VERSION.pdf

This one I color in as I buy them so I have a TRUE color record as well as a one-page record of what I have (Printed on the PTI paper I color on):

http://copicmarker.com/Blank%20Hand%20Color%20Chart.pdf

And this one is great to tell which colors I might need to go with the colors I have for shading:

I have around 85 and am finally getting content. There are maybe 20 ish more I want. I have started getting refills for the ones I use most and yes I have started refilling and I started this addiction in June. I am buying sketch. If that helps anyone. I do a lot of coloring. My E 31 has been refilled probably 3 times. I don't really feel like the airbrush sytem dries them any faster. It would be fun to have em all, but no you really don't need them all. For someone who wanted to know about ciaos, you can fill in with sketch for colors that aren't available. Personally I love the feel of sketch and I would go bonkers if I had different styles in my collection. I like that they are all the same. Enjoy your markers girls! These are the best things since sliced bread!

Hmmm... do "things" ever make us truly happy? That might be a bit too philosophical. But mabye I can offer some hope that you don't need all 322 sketch colors.

Given that colors in the same family are simply lighter < - > darker shades of each other (for the most part), I wouldn't think you would not need EVERY color (because you can basically create some of the in-between colors by blending a lighter and darker color together.

Some colors are very close in shade, as stampinchicago said. Here's a list of colors I've found to be very similar, out of my collection of 81 colors. I'm a little annoyed but, I figure the extras can just be considered refills. These are just my opinion, so others may see them differently:

G82 Spring Dim Green
G21 Lime Green
YG63 Pea Green

G94 Grayish Olive
BG93 Green Gray

YG06 Yellowish Green
G14 Apple Green

YG03 Yellow Green
YG23 New Leaf

YR31 Light Reddish Yellow
Y21 Buttercup Yellow

B93 Light Crockery Blue
B34 Manganese Blue

RV13 Tender Pink
RV23 Pure Pink

R02 Flesh
E02 Fruit Pink

R27 Cadmium Red
R29 Lipstick Red

B000 Pale Porcelain Blue is only slightly lighter than B00 Frost Blue. I'd pick B000.

I scanned in a picture of the colors next to each other, and you can see the differences more clearly with the scan. But in real life, they are very similar. I colored on Georgia-Pacific white from Wal-mart and saturated through to the backside. I'm sure someone could make a case for needing them all, of course!

I have a few Copics and I am very happy with the outline color for images. Otherwise, I am just as happy with using my Mark It markers from Target for $11.

I went looking for them at Hobby Lobby one day and could not find them. SO after reading this thread, I am thanking God I did not find them because I do not need another addiction to pay for! My Cricut, Cuttlebu, Sizzix, and Stampin' Up! products are enough.

So I have 0 and I am very content.

I have a bout 80 right now, and am pretty happy with the range this gives me. There are probably about 20-30 more that I would like to have to fill in my collection, but I can live without them for now.

I have a mix of Ciao and Sketch. I buy them in Ciao if they come in that style ($2.63 on Oozak.com) and buy Sketch for the colors that don't come in Ciao. I marked the ends so I can not only see the number but also the true color at a glance. See this post on my blog for photos.

Thank you for sharing these charts, I am so glad to get this before I went and bought all of the markers. Right now I have 39 plus the colorless blender and I just ordered 20 more this morning, so I will compare the ones I have with the charts and go from there as to the ones I still want to get. Thanks for helping.

I'm starting my collection as well. I've been buying locally to avoid shipping cost. But I just checked out the oozak site and see that they have free shipping for orders over $50.
NOW I'M IN TROUBLE. thanks for the info

I found that many of the ones I wanted we out of stock at oozak so I also ordered from www.creativeplaystamps.com.

They also offer free shipping over $50, but they have the Memento Ink and almost all the colors in stock that oozak didn't have. The Sketch are 56 cents more each, however if you sign up for the coupon list you immediately are sent a coupon for $5 off, so this helps!

I have the basic starter set of 12 and I am not happy at all!

I should've known earlier to buy colors that are closer together.

Default How Many Copic Markers?

I say go for ALL of them. I did and don't regret it one bit. Yes, there is a learning curve, but as with everything - practice, practice, practice. Now I just have to get refills for all the colors. There are so many uses and techniques with them. If you aren't able to attend one of the Copic Certification Classes, reading Marianne's blog (noted in post #16) is an excellent source of information about Copics. She illustrates much of the same information gleaned in the Certification Class. Marianne is absolutely AMAZING!

Cher,
Thanks for the info. Wish I had had it yesterday before I placed my order somewhere else. I could have had free shipping! I think it's great that they have all those other supplies like ink refills that we "need" too. Actually I probably would have spent more than I would have saved on the shipping!

I have 14 Copics and many Prismas. I use them together and they work fine. I got 2 to 3 of each color group but I need some pinks and 1 brown & 1 green yet. I have many Prismas and truthfully I like them both.
