Default Favorite Black Ink?

I've always used Marvy black because it cleans up so easy of my stamps. I rarely do watercolor and if I do I have staz-on that I use.

But my Marvy has gone MIA so I'm needing a new black ink pad. Anyone have any suggestions? It needs to clean up easily and it'd be nice if I could watercolor with it...but it's not a necessity.

TIA.

Pallette Noir is the BEST black ever! I won't use anything but that! It is a true black unlike SU which is more of a purple!

i agree with shanon, hate that purple-y black of the SU pad. I love my Palette Noir, but I also use StazOn Black too.

What do you have to use to clean up the Palette ink from a stamp?

I like the palette noir, too, but I also use the VersaFine black a lot -- it cleans up easier, I think.

I always thought the SU black was just mine because I have the old style pad-- nice to know others think it's purple-y, too!

Ranger Archival Jet Black is the blackest black I have ever used and is great for watercoloring.

I just bought and used a Versafine black, and it's awesome! I haven't watercolored with it yet, but I used my Blush Blossom marker and it didn't smear and stayed a true black. It came off my stamp easily too!

I love the Versafine Black. When you have a detailed stamp, it is awesome! You can also put clear embossing powder on it and emboss it. I love it.

Palette Noir here....better than Staz-On black for paper items, IMHO.

Brilliance Graphite Black!!!!!! Doesn't stain stamps, perfect for coloring with Copics, watercoloring, colored pencil work even when using gamsol and gives a clean, crisp impression!!!! LOVE IT!

I have been using the Versafine Black and like it very much. I just got the new Pallette Noir and haven't used it yet. I like all the Brilliance pads, including the black. I used Versafine blue on my Fourth of July cards using the Papertrey acrylic stamps. Beautiful coverage, and cleaned right off using the Ultraclean.

I guess I'm in the old days, but the only dye black ink I've ever used, and I do some watercoloring, is Memories Black. No fancy name, just Black. Good impressions and it's dark enough for my purposes.

Versafine black is what I have been using for few years. This reminds me I need to get a new pad, and my lid broke on mine

Versafine Black, think it is called onyx. I like the ink a lot, and especially like that I can find it at Michaels and Hobby Lobby and don't have to order it online and pay shipping.

I have Staz-On Black, Archival India Ink Black, Palette Noir, and Versafine Onyx. I really like the Palette for everyday use, and the India for watercoloring. Like everyone else, I've found the SU Black to be too purpley and not really waterproof. That's why I have so many blacks. Still playing with them all and deciding which works best with different techniques and stamps. Here's a link to a thread that compared the black inks for use with markers:

After watercoloring with my black the cover is actually stained purple. I've been using Memories black and I really like it. Its seems more moist than the SU black too.

I use and love the Black India Ink also from Superior Stewart, makers of the Palette Noir ink! Both pads are great and defintely superior to the SU purple. I own the SU black but never use it because of how bad the ink's color is!

My two favorite blacks for coloring in are Versafine Black Onyx and Brilliance Graphite Black. I also like Versamgic Midnight Black as well-it dries really quickly. I haven't tried it for watercoloring but I've used it for coloring images in.

So many of you voted for Versamagic or Versafine inks. What is the difference between the two? Also, what is a good source for these inks (I'm interested in buying a variety of Versamagic/Versafine colors ... not just the black inks).

Thanks!

Versamagic is a chalk pigment ink that dries with a chalk look. Versafine is an oil-based pigment ink that you can color over with your markers or watercolors without bleeding and is also good to use for detailed stamps.

Most LSS would carry these pads.

Another vote for Onyx VersaFine. I just got the Noir Palette, but I'm not sold yet.

I do love Graphite Black Brilliance and use it when I'm embossing.

However, I still use my Black StazOn and finally found a refill! Yahoo!

I love stazon black!!!! Works great for water colouring and gamsol stuff. I found that unless I clear embossed versafine black - it was not waterproof. Stazon does stay on the stamp though - stains it - even with stazon cleaner, but I love it. That said - I have ordered the noir pallette that people mention here - I understand it's very good. I hope it cleans up easier than stazon.

Versafine Onyx Black! It was so highly praised here on SCS that I had to try it. It's wonderful!! I do the Prismacolor Pencil / OMS technique on the VF black image and it does not smear/feather. I clean my stamp with solution of 1 1/2 Tblsp. Simple Green to 2 Cups Distilled Water. (This ratio was recommended via email from Simple Green. She also stated there is no chemical in SG that will hurt our rubber!) Rinse, then I squirt on the SCS posters homemade cleaner to condition them: 2 Tblsp. Glycerin, 1 squirt Baby Wash (w/o alcohol), and 8 oz. Distilled Water. I use a 10.2 oz. empied/washed out Pantene hairspray bottle for this. My stamp scrubber for SG is the painters wall edger which is the same thing as the high priced scrubber pads. I cut one to fit the smaller, clear, reclosable, SU! stamp set storage box.

I love my Marvy black ink pad. It works great with the Copic markers and doesn't bleed. When watercoloring, though, I use the Staz On black. Just got the Palette Noir pad and I think that's going to become a favorite as well. However, I always tend to go back to my Marvy.

Thanks, Faye349, for the great information! I live out in the country and don't have a LSS so I am looking for a good online source for the Versafine pads. Can anyone suggest some sites I could order from? Thanks.
