I've dyed felt with SU reinkers and a little vinegar (think Easter eggs - the vinegar helps to set the dye). It worked really well - but I used deep colors. How did the banana turn out?

I've tried that with craft felt (all synthetic fiber) with Adirondack reinkers, and it didn't take the dye very well, but when I tried it on wool felt, it dyed beautifully!

Wool felt is very easy to die. My friend, Vickie, does it with Kool Aid! However, she stocks wool felt squares in just about every color known to (wo)man on her website: annieskeepsakes.com.

Yes, synthetic felt won't take the dye. Wool felt definitely will, and it will be more permanent if you add a bit of acid (like vinegar) to the dyebath.

How can you tell the difference between wool or synthetic felt? Is it labeled or does it feel/look different?

Most of the stuff you see in chain stores is acrylic felt. It should say so on the end of the bolt, or if it's already cut in squares it should say so on the box or label. Wool felt is more expensive than acrylic, too. Quilt shops, knitting shops, are good sources of wool felt, or like I posted earlier, annieskeepsakes.com sells squares.

If you want to felt your own wool, you can go to Goodwill or Salvation Army & look for wool clothing. Wash it in the washer with a little soap & hot water, cold rinse & the most agitation (heavy duty or jeans setting). Dry in the dryer on hot. You might have to steam it a little if there are a lot of wrinkles. The only downfall to this is that it might turn out too thick for embellishments. I've made wool "penny rugs" and other applique projects by cutting wool felt and felted wool with my Sizzix Originals dies. Hope this helps!

Wool felt is thicker and very "scratchy" feeling. I just found some yesterday at Joanns. It's on bolts. I could only find cream color that was light enough to dye so I'm going to try that. They also had some wool blends so I'm going to try one of those too.

Now Ladies get some white ribbon and dye away. It is habit forming.
Hope you have as much fun as I did. Gold pens are fun to use too.

I just sprayed Memories Mists and Glimmer Mist on 100% wool felt (PTI Vintage Cream), hit it with the heat gun..will continue to let it dry overnight .. Both took to the wool nicely..do I really need to use vinegar?

I would say yes. I recently dyed some white ribbon with reinker. Waited til it was completely dry then used it on a card. I went to use the card two days ago (after sitting for about 3 weeks) and some of the ink had leeched out onto the paper. I was super bummed because it was a cute card. So, I would say yes, use the vinegar...better safe than sorry.
