Default embossing folders

I only know two brands for embossing. Cricut makes an embossing folder for the Cutttlebug, but it will work in your machine. It is a piece of plastic folded in half. One side has a positive image and one a negative (highs and lows) so that when you put your paper to be embossed inside, it gets squished into the shape of the image. They provide very deeply embossed images. They used to only come in an A2 size, but they are making larger sizes now as well.

The second one I have is made by Sizzix and is called a texture plate and they are much larger. There is a different pattern on each side. Because only one side of your cardstock is getting the pattern embossed into it, it is not a very deep impression. I add a piece of fun foam to the recommended sandwich (on top of the black rubber piece) to get it a little deeper.

I'm sure there are other brands, Impressabilities by Spellbinders?, for example, but these are the only two I have.

Hope this helped. Enjoy your machine. In no time flat you'll be asking yourself why you were so nervous about it.

I mean to just emboss the die - not cut it out

PREMIUM & EXTENDED PREMIUM CREASE PADS

We recommend the Premium Crease Pads and Extended Premium Crease Pads when using rule-based dies with score lines. The crease pads provide a flexible cutting surface that produces clean cuts and well-defined score lines. When using the crease pads, you should layer your sandwich to pass through the Big Shot in the following way (starting from the bottom):

Standard or Extended Cutting Pad
Shim (optional)
Die, blade up
Material to be cut
Premium or Extended Premium Crease Pad*

Shims are used to add thickness to the sandwich passing through the Big Shot machine, applying more pressure to the die and resulting in deeper score lines and embossed images. Plastic shims are included with each crease pad, but you can also use text-weight paper or card stock as a shim.

The necessity of shims will vary among users. Due to the tolerable variances in the measurements of all products associated with cutting, results can slightly differ depending on the material being cut, the die being used, or even from one Big Shot machine to another. You should experiment to identify what works best (shim, no shim, extra shim, etc.) for the material you are cutting and the die you are using.

*Use the Premium Crease Pad with Originals or Bigz dies. Use the Extended Premium Crease Pad with Bigz XL dies.

Here is a link to a video demonstration of the Big Shot.

* You can use this pad when you want to create a more defined crease on the material being cut and scored. It's especially useful when you are cutting through materials other than card stock. It works great with dies that have a score line, and we recommend it if you use the Scallop Envelope, Pillow Box, Circle 3-D Ornament, Pointed 3-D Star, and Petal Card dies.

You so Rock! Thanks for your patience with all of us who are trying to figure this out! Never got to the machine yesterday, but am heading to J's today to get a crease pad...will the regular one be suffiecient or do I have to have the premium to cut and emboss in one pass?
TIA

The Premium Crease Pad is most commonly found in Black.
Sizzix had a Red Premium Crease Pad and a Blue Premium Crease Pad. These colors are harder to find and they are thicker than the Black version.

The Premium Crease Pad is for use with Bigz and Originals Dies with Score Lines.

The Extended Premium Crease pad is for use with Bigz XL Dies with Score lines.

Either one can be used to cut Nestabilities in One Pass.

There are 2 vinyl shims that come in the packaging. Make sure you hold on to them! Label them with a permanent marker so you know what they are.

You'll use them to "shim" your sandwich if it's not cutting properly. Add a little thickness KWIM?

Hugs and Blessings

If you find they are not cutting cleanly. I flip my cutting pad after each use then store it under something heavy to keep it from bowing to much.

If you are having transfer from your pads (cut marks on your paper or die) try putting a sheet of copy paper between the paper and the cutting pad.

It really depends on how often you use them and if you are constantly shifting the placement of the die on the pad to get maximum use.

1000 cuts seems to be the average

Whoo-hoo! I'll be back for lots of reading here! Dh just told me to order the big shot for my B'day! He knew I wanted one but have a cuttlebug and wasn't going to spend the money. I'm so excited.
Quick question.....Can I get by for now with just the extended crease pad or should I get the standard too? I can't tell by the picture if one is thicker than the other or just longer?

You can use the extended cutting pads they are the same thickness as the standard. However you wil wear them out quicker that way. I went through my standard cutting pads in less than 6 months and they were so scratched they left marks on my cardstock so I had to buy another set.

Has anyone used Spellbinders Impressabilities in the Big Shot/Kick? If so, what are the sandwiches you have used for the various effects, and how do you like them relative to similar products?
Here is more information about them, including a video demonstration on the Wizard: http://www.creativeplaystamps.com/sp...ies-c-406.html

Default Spellbinder Impressibilities

There is a list on this forum somewhere and it is also on the impressibilities folders. I find I need to add a shim of cardstock occasionally to get the effect I want. It sometimes is dicey to get the right cut and right combination . There is lots of info on here though. Look at the beginning of the thread.

I've used my Big Shot with the impressabilities and started with the multipurpose platform on tab 1 and added a standard cutting plate followed by the impressability, cardstock, silicone rubber mat, and topped it with my texturz impression pad. It seems to work ok. I here a little spray of alchohol can intensify the impression. I just add a piece of paper or cardstock to adjust my intensity as needed.

Since the Impressabilities are similar to metal stencils you should the sandwich for metal stencils. It's on your MPP.

I would add cardstock shim between the silicone rubber mat and the impressions pad for more intensity.

Joann's.com has them on sale for $59.99 and if you do a search on Joann coupons you can get free shipping too.

I ordered mine on Sat. It's been shipped and I too probably will have it before the weekend. WEEEEE HAAAAA!

What dies/embossing folders do you love the most.

YAY!! So exciting! Did you get a Big Kick, Big Shot, Big Shot Express or Big Shot Pro? (I'm so excited about the Pro. I am ordering one next year!)

Tough question on the favorite dies and embossing folders!

For dies, my "go to" dies are my Spellbinders Nestabilities because they are SO versatile. I highly recommend them. Mine get used a lot. I love the scallop/plain classic circle set, scallop/plain classic oval set, scallop/plain scallop rectangle set and scallop/plain classic square set, along with Labels 1, Labels 4, Labels 8. They just released a whole bunch and my wish list grew by a mile!

As for Sizzix dies, the ones I use most are the Balloons (retired but this one might work instead), the Large Gift Bigz die (also seems to be retired), the Christmas Tree and a bunch of others.

My *favorite* embossing folders are the ones with general patterns that can be used many different ways, but I have some specific ones (like the Sizzix Sweet Baby folder) that I just adore using.

Have fun!!

Favorite CB Folders - D vine Swirl, Texile, Swiss Dot, Argyle, and Diamond Plate. These are the ones I use most, but have lots of others that are great as well.
