Im thinking about getting the ATG gun. I was at The Frame House in Fells Point, MD on Saturday to get something framed. The owner, Nadine, was surprised that I even knew what an ATG was. I explained that scrappers and card makers are using it because Mono Adhesive doesnt hold. I asked if I could try it and it was easier and lighter that I thought.
However, I have a question about the tape. For the most part, Nadine doesnt use acid free tape. She said it is too stringy. I tried what she had and it was stringy. Has anyone found that problem? Is there regular acid free tape and gold acid free?
She also said most of the framing shops in the area are not using the gun. Most framers lay the tape down on the project and lift off the backing. Has anyone tried using just the tape?
I have the gun, don't have any problems with strings. But just using the tape would drive me insane! Kinda would defeat the purpose of applying it and being done, rather than applying it and then peeling off the backing on the tape. KWIM??
I sometimes have little "stringies" when I lift the gun off the paper. I just try to stop a little bit short of the paper edge and really don't have any problems. Just using the tape alone would drive me nuts, too
3M does make the tape in a red non-acid-free type and a gold acid-free type. I've only used the red, but there are others on this site that swear by the gold. When I need to reorder, I'll probably try the gold since I can use it in scrapbooking, too.
I don't have the answer to the question but would like to know more too! Are the stringies like the ones you get when using a hot glue gun? Oh and has anyone ever order from www.armelcompany.com? It looks like the gun and tape is cheaper there.
I absolutely love my ATG. Never had any trouble with either the gold or the red. I buy gold now but couldn't give you a real reason why I like that better. I love that I can use it on ribbon, paper, pictures, just about anything.
Not EXACTLY sure I am understanding your question, but when I contacted 3M about the regular tape being acid free this is the response that I got:
Quote:
Thank you for contacting 3M. The "Gold" version is the only ATG tape that
is acid free. However, 924 contains only trace amounts of acid. Tape 924
has been tested by outside testing labs to see if it's suitable for use
with photos. It has been determined that it is safe for photos. However,
some people were still a bit unconfortable with it, so we came out with the
"Gold" version which is truly acid-free.
I LOVE my ATG. Won't use anything else. There is a small learning curve to using it, but it isn't any different than a tape runner. I have 1 gun with the GOLD, and 1 gun with the regular. I haven't had any issues with stringiness. The tape was starting slip off until I realized I wasn't holding it quite straight enough.
I have used the tape without the gun....I actually bought a roll of the Gold on Sale at my LSS first knowing that they would be having a 50% off coupon in a few days & I would use it to buy the gun then. Using the tape only works, but it is just slow going. I had no problems with it.
I have not mastered my gun yet, but have found it can be a bit sticky because I do not stop before the end of my paper.

I love this company! They are great, the prices are right and they ship so fast! The woman who fills the order is a scrapbooker too!

My ATG is the best tool I own. I always use "gold" tape and make sure that I release the trigger and pull back a bit before I lift it off the paper. Kind of like flicking your wrist. If I follow that I have not problems. I use the 700 because I mainly use the 1/2 inch size tape. I also bought the adapter to use 1/4" if I need too but in a years time I have not needed to use the 1/4"

I just bought this, because I was so tired of doing swaps and always having to replace monoadhesive. When I first tried it, I had strings and not consistent application. I tried applying it much slower and that seemed to help, but have to learn the knack of lifting when done to have smooth flat
edge; but I think I will love it, so much tape on a $4. roll

I have not had any problems with mine... I simply stop depressing the trigger a tiny bit before I'm ready to stop the tape application and THEN lift up the gun... Much less hassle than running out of glue all the time with the tiny snail adhesives.......

I just went through the order process to see where would be cheaper...and after shipping is added in even though the per roll price is cheaper at armel the overall order is cheaper at framing supplies.
just wanted to put that out there...I know each place charges different shipping....

I've been using ATG tape for years (lots of them!) and have never used a gun...one more gadget I don't need! Burnish the release paper prior to removing the paper from the tape. After adjoining the surfaces, burnish the aeas over the tape to secure the bond.
I don't use acid-free tape; I use either Permanent or Repositionable.
have the gun and love it! cannot be without it... but that is just me! My fave tool and it feels weird to me to use the small tape thingys... i do not use the acid free and have not had a problem

I have the yellow 700 ATG gun with the 1/2 tape.

The stringies are NOTHING like what you get from a hot glue gun! I don't think anyone would use the ATG gun if it was like the hot glue gun!

No, the stringies are more of a balling/sticking of the tape. I don't have much of a problem but, I do not use the acid free. I'm mostly a card maker, so I don't need my cards to be preserved for eternity. I love, love, love,my ATG gun. It is easy to use and sticks great. Refills are very economical too. I have been using it for over a year, and I have never regretted my investment.
Thanks for answering my questions. Glad to hear that the stringies are not an issue. I will definitely be getting one as soon as my budget allows. Now I just have to use up my other adhesives.
LOVE my ATG!!! I mean LOOOOOOVE it! I have the 714 and use the 924 and trust that it is safe for my photos. This stuff sticks BETTER than Sticky Strip so I don't have to use much at all when I am scrapbooking. Plus, my page protector will pick up any slack from my adhesive.
Did you know that the 924 will RUB OFF just like Dotto if you put it in the wrong place? LOOOOOOOOVE that!!! I can't tell you how many times I have applied adhesive to the "wrong side" of double sided paper not remembering which side I was using until about to put it together.
Also, I bought my gun back in Jan 07 from Framing Supplies ( www.framingsupplies.com ) and only paid about $80 (can't remember exact amount) for the gun along with 12 rolls of tape. I figured and refigured the cost because I wanted to be sure it was worth the investment. Ended up with the tape costing me about .79 per roll when compared to mono(considering I will have the gun forever.)

Well, I 'have' my ATG and tape--I just can't play with it yet! :( Hubby got it for me for Christmas, so it's still all bubble-wrapped, darn it! Can't wait to try it out! I did get a dozen rolls of tape with it--the acid free, since I am a scrapper, too.

I tried an ATG in the framing dept where I work...I wonder if they manager will notice if I just bring my cards in there to finish them, lol. ;) I wish they sold them so I could get one with a coupon and my discount....
I'm going to ask for a ATG gun for Christmas and want opinions as to which one I would need more. Mostly I do cards but once in a while do a scrapbook. Would you red one for 1/4" be better for me or the yellow one for wider tape? Thanks for your help. If I get my husband to order it for me I have to be very detailed in telling him what I want.
I bought one a couple of months ago and I love it! You will save so much money on the refills. I bought mine here: http://www.framingsupplies.com/3M/TapeDispenserGuns.htm
The 714 is what I bought at only $37 and the refills are wonderful and cheap. Every once in a while I will not pull back at the right angle and get a little bit of stringy, but I have never messed up a project. So much less problems than with a regular mono and like I said for less $$$.
Here is where I first heard about the ATG: Forums at Splitcoaststampers
Good Luck!
I jumped on the ATG bandwagon! I'd been thinking about it since everyone was talking about it. The initial cost was the drawback, but when I realized that I was probably spending at LEAST $10-$15/month on various adhesives that the ATG would save me money in the long run.
I decided to order from http://www.armelcompany.com. I called the order in and the very nice lady told me they would probably get it out in the mail today. Yippee!!!!! Merry Christmas to me. ;)
