I know that this isn't SU but can anyone tell me if an ATG gun is worth the price? If you order the guns, do they come with any adhesive in it? Between the red (1/4") or the gold (1/2") one, which would be more useful?

I have the Red one I had to order tape with it. Well worth the price. My favorite with gold tape for my personal projects. Along with glue dots and dimensionals.

From what I've read, it sounds like 3M recently altered the design of the red 714 a little so it is harder to load and a little tricker to see where you are applying adhesive compared to the original design. I had a 714 on my wishlist until I heard about this, and now the yellow 700 has replaced its spot on my list.
I have the yellow 700. Love it! Got it on ebay and it came with several rolls of tape.
After I read on another thread that most people only put a small piece of tape on each corner, I decided not to waste so much tape. I had been rolling it all the way down the edges.
Still need to use a glue pen for smaller stuff.
I have the red one, but I got it this summer. I am usually very thrifty with my craft money and I have to say this is the best thing I ever bought. I use only the 1/4". I did not want to deal with an adaptor. I stamp and scrapbook. I figure I can add a second strip of 1/4" if I need to, but I can't use the 1/2" and take away.

I have the red one. It didn't come with adhesive in it, since there are various styles to choose from - you choose what you like. I always use the Gold Acid Free variety. Sticks great for my purposes and I'm always ready in case I want to scrapbook.
I just purchased the red one last week after reading about it on SCS. At first I didn't like it. I couldn't get the knack of using it w/out balls of adhesive ending up on my project or none at all. My 10 yo daughter was using it with no problems tho! I've figured out the trick and I love it! I purchased the Gold Acid Free tape to use with it. I probably won't use the SNAIL any longer after getting this.
I LOVE my yellow 700 ATG gun. I too use the Gold adhesive with mine. As for size. I use both. I definetly think it is worth the price. I don't refill all that often and get lots of projects done. In fact, my boys (8 and 5 yrs) used it for decorating Turkey's for school projects.

I consider myself pretty frugal and the initial cost of the ATG was daunting, but well worth it! I have the red one and I like it because I can roll it down my 1/4" ribbon and it fits. The tape refill is 36 YARDS of tape - compared to about 45 INCHES on a Tombo or SNAIL. They last much, much longer and I can't remember the exact amount, but the refills were less than $3 each. The adhesive is much stronger than Tombo and SNAIL, too. I love it!
Having just completed 50 invites (5 x 7 with 5 separate layers outside and two inside), I can safetly say if I had to rely on anything but the ATG (I've got the 714), I would be insane. I had to change the roll once during this process (by comparison, 20 regular A2 size invites with one layer outside used 6 Tombo adhesive runners last year). This adhesive holds paper. The mechanics are slightly different than a tape runner (e.g. learning when to release the trigger, pulling straight instead of up when you are finished, loading it). My DH, who was helping me with the 50 invites commented on what a great tool this was (although he also said he couldn't understand why this would be a relaxing hobbly).
I have had mine for several years - the 714 (red one) - and I don't know what I did before. It is easy to use and the tape is alot less than the Tombow runners, plus it sticks way better! I got mine from Framing Supplies online and they also have the tape - it takes the 1/4" and I use the Gold.
I have the red #714 it holds 1/4" tape. I get the gold tape as it is acid free. I ordered three rolls when I ordered my gun I don't believe they come with any tape. I really like mine and I think it is well worth the money.
I have the 714. I got mine just a couple months ago and I am hooked. I do not know why someone said that they are tricky to load. They are not like the snail where you just pop in a new cartridge but I would not say hard or tricky to load. As with any new toy you have a small learning curve and then you will be hooked just like the rest of us. The rolls of tape are so inexpensive you will wonder why you waited so long..................
