I have decided to start buying some SU ribbon, because although I have tons of ribbon, nothing ever matches my cards. I am also trying to stick with SU paper (both CS and DP) for my cards because of the quality and because everything matches (I'm a garanimals kinda gal!).
So my first question is, do you use the 1/4" more or the 5/8" more? Since I mail 90% of my cards, I'm afraid the 5/8" ribbon will make my knots too big to mail. But if I don't knot it and just run it across the card, will the 1/4" look too small?
Also, do they change the color of ribbon they offer very often? They have lots of greens, but no yellows.
Last question, how closely do they match? Some of the paper is hard to tell apart, can I mix and match the ribbon and the paper for some of them?
Maybe these are hard questions to answer. I'm just getting ready to put in a order next week and I just don't want to wind up with more ribbon in my stash that I won't use.
In my limited experience (since I only have about 10 SU ribbons) they match really well and I prefer the 1/4 inch for both the size and the quality.....I don't know if the helps at all, but thought I would put my 2 cents in!!

I love the SU Ribbon. IMO it matches the cardstock perfectly. I prefer the 5/8" size more than the 1/4", but that's just me and my design issues. With the thicker ribbon you could always do this type of bow instead of a knot. It's kind of flatter for mailing purposes.
I dont like the thicker ribbons as a rule because I always tie a knot and it makes the cards to bulky. I have ALL the 3/8" ribbons and I love them.
blessings.
I have most every SU! ribbon and the ones I love best right now are the taffetas. They're a bit wider than 1/4" but they are so pliable and soft. They tie beautifully.
I have most of the SU ribbons, and as far as the grosgrain goes, I use the 1/4" more than the 5/8". I love the wider ribbon look, but like other said, the knots get to be awful bulky. I do use a lot of the striped ribbons and gingham...ok I use them all...but if I had to choose between Chocolate Chip 1/4" or 5/8" I would pick the 1/4" first.
I do a lot of multiple knots on the smaller ribbons like this card. You can do a lot with the smaller ribbons, but if you really like the look of the larger ones...go for what you love!

I prefer ribbon that's 1/2" wide myself (though that doesn't answer your question). I think the 5/8" is a bit too bulky and wide for cards, but the 1/4 can be too small.
For other color options, check out Reasonable Ribbon. They have great prices and fast shipping. I've ordered the SU matched colors they sell before and they are good matches: http://www.reasonableribbon.com/cate...ategory_id=281
Also as far as yellow ribbon goes....I use the very vanilla in place of barely banana and so saffron.....as long as you don't have the ribbon directly on top of that cardstock it looks really close.
I love big ribbons.
This is the smallest I'd go right now:
It's just a prettier look when you tie it in a bow. The same if it's just a single knot. Not good looking.
I have the 1/4" ones but rarely use them and when I do it's on paper that are busy like this one.
I'm a ribbon person and can't do a card without one usually but to me the bigger ones are just a lot prettier and the extra $.17 is not too expensive considering that's the only present I'm giving the person.
I don't have a lot but everything matches great. I prefer the 1/4" because I mail a lot of my cards and the knot isn't to big. I do have some of the satin because it is so pretty being 2-sided but I mostly use that for cards I am giving away.

I have to agree that I use the 1/4 more, but I am a ribbon junkie as well and have to have it all(don't have it all yet, but I am working on it) I love how the colors all match and I also have used the vanilla for yellows, but I also dye it with the reinkers and that works really well. Start with one size and get a few of the colors you use alot and then try a different size to see what works the best. SU does add colors once in awhile and we can hope for some more thin yellows. There is a cool one 5/8 one coming out in the SAB catty--it is poly twill which I find easier to tye. HTH
Wow! Thanks for all the great replies! I'm not sure I'm any closer to picking what I want, but the extra information does help. Maybe I should just have one of you make up my shopping list! :p There are just too many awesome items to chose between!
I love layers on my cards but don't want a lot of 'bulk' so I find in my classes we are using more of the 1/4" ribbon. And the colors match the cardstock beautifully. You can't go wrong!
If you're just starting to get the SU ribbons, the ones I use all the time are the vanilla, saffron, and chocolate chip. I have the saffron and choc. in both the smaller and the wider widths. Between these three colors, I can pretty much use them on any card. When any of my customers wants to get some ribbon but has no idea where to start, I steer them to these neutrals cause you can't go wrong with them.
If you have any of the in-colors from the current catalog, the matching ribbons with two white stripes down the middle are really fun and of course match the paper wonderfully.
Oh, I forgot to add, if you don't want bulk, you can take a couple of inches of ribbon, fold it in half, and staple that to your card. (looks kinda like the bottom tails of a blue ribbon)
Oh, also when you buy ribbons, buy them in yards, just like SU. You go through them quickly. I don't like wired ribbons but I love ribbons with a body... gives the bows a nice fluff
