A HUGE Thank you for this idea. I didn't want to buy a Cuttelbug, but was going to wait and get a Big Shot. The lady (Kim) that I buy my Cricut cartridges from sells the folders for $4.00 each... I am going to order some. Thanks again for the moneysaving idea. All I wanted the CB for was the embossing anyways.. yeah. Pam

I may have to give this a try. I haven't been bitten by the Cuttelbug, because I simply cannot justify the price tag. On the other hand, I'm willing to give this a try for $5.

BTW if anyone tries this successfully with the pasta machine let me know. Since I'd don't do clay anymore, it's just gathering dust in my stamp room.

FYI.....I tried this with both my wooden and my marble rolling pins and the marble really worked a whole lot better. I think because of the weight and the very smooth surface, it was easier and gave a much cleaner, even impression. So if anyone has a marble rolling pin, try it and let me know what you found.

Boy do I love this place. What a great tip this was. Thanks!

I have tried both of these & its awesome...I know everyone is on the CB bandwagon...I've had several problems...even the handle breaking...I was already gonna take mine back & get the BS...this is just another reason...all of my folders and dies came out fine!!!!I bought mine w/a coupon...but I'm still saving 40.00!!!! I even did it without wetting them!!!!!!!!!!!1

I like the embossing, but can't justify the expense, nor do I have a place to store it. However! I do have a marble rolling pin that I can put to use! Thanks for this tip!

Me too! I just didn't want to invest in the machine. I know it also makes die cuts, but I don't need those. I just wanted to emboss, and I'll pick up a few folders to give this a try! Thanks so much for this tip!

What an awesome idea!!! I was looking at the Cuttlebug the other day and I didnt want to buy it because it was $80. I had a 40% coupon but i still didnt want to spend the money. I only wanted to use it for the embossing folders, not die cuts. This is great. Now I can buy a couple of the embossing folders and save so much money. Thanks for sharing!!!!

THANKS. I don't do die cuts, just punches, so I was dreading having to purchase a die cut machine so I can try the cuddlebug stuff. Way cool. I used to make homemade tortillas so this will get me rolling again and maybe I will make tortillas again!!!!

I got my first CuttleBug embossing folder just yesterday, do have a Sizzix machine and works well with the convertor, but did think about using the pasta machine. So I have just tried it and it works well.

The only problem, which may just be because of the size of my pasta machine, was that I had to guide the embossing stencil as it came out and curve it slighlty, otherwise it just hits the base of the pasta machine. Was ok, but may be a little more difficult if thicker card was used.

Ok I went to Michaels yesterday after reading this and got a folder. It works like a pro!! I thought that I would even have to use more muscle than I did. I really like the results!

No, it won't leave a watermark if you just lightly mist each side a couple of times and then immediately roll it. The heavier the rolliing pin the better. Both my marble one and my heavy metal ones work well.

I just tried it (without spraying) and it worked pretty well. I will try it again with spraying. This is a good option if you don't want to buy the Cuttlebug. I still want it, and now I know what it can do as far as the folders.

Tryed this today with a marble rolling pin and a Fiskars texture plate and found out it works better if you use a brayer with the rubber attachment, just make sure the paper is really wet!

I tried this yesterday and it worked great! Instead of spraying my paper I held it over a steaming tea pot to lightly moisten it.

OMG! I really didn't want to purchase a Cuttlebug, as I've already got the big sizzix machine--and think it's kind of a pain. DH would have a stroke if I purchased another machine that gathers dust! I do, however have a rolling pin (I have one exclusively for "other" projects--linoleum flooring, etc., so I will have to go out and buy a couple embossing folders! I'm sure my DH can' t complain about a "few" embossing folders...at least he'll think it's only a "few"!!

This tip is great. It really works. I was agonizing about buying the machine, too. Now I don't have to.

I dashed off to Michaels and got two embossing folders yesterday. One is the D'Vine Swirl, a card-size folder, and the other one is called Cats, with 4 cute kitties in it. I used a coupon on one of them, so got 2 folders for $10!

I tried it on DCWV textured cs, and ivory cardstock from Office Depot, which is a little thinner.

I think it worked a little better on the thinner cardstock, but both turned out very well. I'm posting a sample in the gallery.

Thanks for 'dis-enabling' me.. I, too, can't justify the cost of a Big Shot, but mercy, my mouth has been really waterin' (thanks to ya'll and JulieHHR) .

Now I can buy a folder and get my DD excited too.

I have a rollin' pin but I wanna keep it for pastries. I'm gonna try a piece of PVC pipe instead. We have a stash from some remodelin'. Doncha think DH will be impressed at my frugalness?

After lookin' back at that tutorial, I'm gonna try a thick dowel inside the PVC. The tutorial said to use the 'edges' (which the picture shows her hands on the 'handles') to get deeper impressions. So.. makes sense.. pushing down on the handles while rolling would make more pressure and more EVEN pressure. I originally was thinkin' of just pressure on the PVC itself.. but pressure out to the sides would be much more productive!

I am wondering if you do this repeatedly without the acrylic plate over the embossing folder, will the rolling pin start breaking the folder? I think maybe the uneven pressure, or the repeated rolling motion might cause cracks or something? The acrylic plate keeps pressure evenly distributed...
What do you all think? This seems too good to be true!

It works!! This is so cool! I just bought the flower swirl embossing folder with a 40% off coupon at Joann's. I used my wood rolling pin (don't have a marble one!) and it worked great. I used several different kinds of paper, plain white CS, textured CS and white core CS, and they all worked great! I'm so excited! I wanted a Cuddlebug mainly because of the embossing folders but didn't want to spend $40 -- now I don't have to. Plus....as an added bonus...I'm using my rolling pin which was never being used! Thanks SO MUCH for posting this tip!

I bought 3 folders - and no cuttlebug. I tried with a stick kind of like a rolling pin. I think it will work great with a heavier rolling pin.

I also tried them with the pasta machine I have for clay. It works great on the widest setting, but I wonder if it puts too much pressure on them? And like a previous poster said, you have to ease the folder out a bit as it hits the bottom of the pasta maker. I suppose it's possible that they will crack earlier than with other methods, but for $5 each and with infrequent use, it's a great option for me.

I started a thread to ask this question, but no one responded...hope I'm not hijacking this thread.

I don't own a die cut/embossing system, but I love the idea of being able to emboss with the CB folders. Can other systems' templates work with a rolling pin as well?

TIA
