I just used my regular sewing machine needle. But I did use one that was older, since paper can dull scissors so much, I figured it would do the same for the needle. When I was done, and ready to sew on fabrics again, I put in a new needle.

I read a thread somewhere from Jennifer Ellefson (sp?) that she uses a denim needle. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to buy one as I'm seeing all kinds of ideas using sewing on cards!
I've just used an ordinary one, but a medium size rather than a fine one. Sort of the weight I'd use for sewing corduroy, I wouldn't even have one suitable for jeans. And an older one, as Jenny24 said, works fine. You'll need to adjust the tension somewhat too - or at least I do !
In my experience, it's not the size of the needle that determines success while sewing on paper.
Just try not to sew through any areas where you've used adhesive!! If your needle punches multiple times through adhesive, it may begin to "...gum up..." It can deposit some adhesive into your bobbin cage. That will really cause a problem down the road. ~ kbc

I use my "used" embroidery needles (Schmetz). They are super sharp & slim (so they don't leave as large of a hole in your paper). You can get them on sale or with a coupon at Joann's.
I just use my regular needles. I have a Pfaff Quilters machine. Works great but I find using a stitch length of 4.5 works best for me too. A longer stitch is better than a smaller one.

If I ever had a Bernina, I would never use it on paper. Needle or not. It is a quilter's dream machine. Get a Janome Mini and be happy. Do not ruin a fine machine like that.
I think the tread matters more than the needle. You really need to use a quality polyester blend thread. I've also noticed that the tension needs to be just right.
