YOu know, the base piece of paper, the one you may (or may not) layer on? The one you will be writing on the inside of, and maybe (or maybe not) signing your name to the back of as the artist?
I'm such a paper snob, and am not sure where or what to get to get the 'feel' I'm looking for ...
suggestions from the SCSers would be greatly appreciated!!

I get the packs of neutral cardstock at Michaels. The neutrals and the black and the black and white packs seem to be heavier than the colored packs that they sell. I just picked up 4 more packages today in fact. ;)
I buy the 80 lb. cover weight cardstock from Office Max. You have to ask for it at the copy center because they don't sell it on the shelf. They usually will sell me a pkg of 250 for $14.99. Make sure it is cover weight, not just 80 lb. I find that it is weightier than the cardstock you can buy at the craft stores. Of course I love SU's whisper white, it is so buttery smooth but I find it kind of pricey to use as a base.

I use SU cardstock for all of my cards. When the colors are light enough to write on, I make the whole card from that base color and then layer and embellish from there.
I usually buy a pack of white card stock in the copy paper aisle at WalMart. I think it is weightier than the craft store card stock. It's about $4.00 for 250sheets. I think I might try the Office Max kind, though.
I like to use DCWV Matchmakers textured cardstock for my card bases. I love the paper that Hero Arts uses for their card bases on their website, but I have never seen anywhere that I can buy it. The DCWV is the closest to that look I can get.

Great idea.....thanks for the tip!! I'm going to try this.
I use all SU CS for all my cards. If the color is too dark to write on I just mount a piece of WW CS as an inside layer.
Ditto the above! I do hav a few pieces of CS from my LSS that I still use occasionally when the color suits the card, but otherwise everything is overwhelmingly SU!
My LSS carries some cool CS that is colored and/or patterned on one side and then white on the other - super handy for writing in the card when using dark colors! Only problem is that the white sometimes comes through in the folds...
SU! 99% of the time for the cardfronts and the base. Dark base cards get a Whisper White or Very Vanilla liner to write on the inside. Light base I just write on the inside as is, no liner. I will use the occassional Bazzill, never anything chincey or lightweight just to save a few cents. If I am going to spend the time creating a high quality card wiith better papers, why do the base with something flimsy or not of the same quality.
I use SU for all my cards. When it is dark cardstock, then I mount white or vanilla inside to write on. I buy the white and vanilla pre-cut cards w/envelopes at Michaels when they are on sale, then I also have the envelopes to mail the cards. I cut the cards in half so then I have 2 pieces of the size I need for the inside of cards.
I use SU for my card fronts but often will save my "good" paper and use a different brand for the body of the card, especially if I am mass producing like at Christmas. But, I can't stand the stuff from Michaels, even just to write on.
I found a wonderful cardstock at Office Depot. It looks and feels EXACTLY like SU's confetti white. It has a great heavy feel and the same random speckle. They also had evelopes to match! And, it was 6.99 or so for the reem! Unfortunately that was over a year ago and I have thrown out the packaging, and I don't see it online right now. Perhaps someone else here has seen it too.
I use all SU CS for all my cards. If the color is too dark to write on I just mount a piece of WW CS as an inside layer.
Me too! I figure, I went through all the trouble of making the card, it needs to be on a nice, thick CS...It makes the card feel more substantial to me.

Patti-
Hero Arts sells their own note cards and envelopes, most of what they use in their samples are what they sell. They are really nice, I've used them a few times.
Personally I'll use whatever is a good weight and the right color for what I'm doing. I do like Marco's paper alot, they have some cream card stock that has a smooth finish that works *really* well w/ the glamsol technique!
Being that I am "branching out" so to speak by teaching in local stamp stores I have had to go in search of new mediums. It would be highly frowned upon if I showed up with SU cardstock in hand - LOL. I "heart" Stampin' Up! cardstock the weight is fantastic, but I am finding some wonderful alternatives.
I have fallen in love with Memory Box Notecards and Paper (see review on my blog). The colors and white inside are fantastic. The weight on these is more like SU WW though and so I usually have layers to my cardfronts to make it more sturdy. The addiction is also being fed by the fact that they offer fantastic 6x6 patterned cardstock - LOVE that stuff!!!
I have also discovered Classic Crest Solar White. The "tooth" on this cardstock is perfect for the Prismacolor pencil technique I am using - it is absolutely perfect for coloring on without using gamsol or any other type of blending device. I have learned to "just" color and it is oh so addictive!
Waste Not Paper by Paper-Source is also becoming a favorite of mine - the colors are absolutely amazing! Really different!!! I can't understand why exactly it is that I NEED (LOL) over a 100 different colors of cardstock - but well... I am a paper lover you might say
Goodness gracious - how could I forget one of my new fave's - Fabriano Mediovalis!!! Turned on to by our very own queen of rubber - Miss Julie! Available now at http://stores.ebay.com/StarLitStudio LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the simple elegance of these cards!!!! You MUST all give them a try!
Thanks to all for their replies... I am loving all of the options. While SU WW is still my fave, sometimes I am looking for something with a little more weight, you know?
Thanks AGAIN to ALL!

I never use wisper white as a base- It is just too flimsey- I use it fo r a layer- but I really do not like the weight of it!
- You cannot beat Stampinup's colored csrdstock. I will buy reams of other cardstock at at Kelly Paper-but only if the weight is 80 lb coverstock or greater. d

I'm with Ellen on the Classic Crest -- on all of the Neenah 80# cover stocks I've tried, in fact! Their stock is wonderful, and the last time I checked you could get stamping or scrapping packs on their web-site -- you can also order reams, if you're so inclined, and envelopes. They make some gorgeous textured stuff, too -- linen, columns and laid are all great, IMHO. I also use their Classic Crest Natural White as a sturdier substitute for SU!'s Very Vanilla. Virtual match on the color, no flimsies! I also love their Earthstone as a base card -- white with a gray speckly effect. Can be either very formal or casual, depending on the stamps and colors used with it. The Classic Columns white is incredibly elegant as a base card, too. Nice people, ship fast -- have been ordering from them for years and never had a problem. ==> www.neenahpaper.com >

HTH's anyone out there looking for good answers.[/QUOTE]
You're right, Denise -- 80# cover is definitely the weight you need for a good base card! I love Kelly Paper, and try to limit my buying trips (luckily the nearest one is several hours away, so it isn't too hard to do). If you have the space (or friends to split with), reams are *the* way to go, price-wise. Did you know that equivalents for SU!'s Naturals and Confettis can be gotten by the ream there? Both are made by Fox River Paper Co. -- the Naturals are called Quest (white and cream), and the Confettis are called Confetti. What SU! calls Confetti 'Cream', Fox River calls 'Ninja' for some reason -- but the stock is the same. (There are other colors of Quest, too, that are also speckled and very nice.) I've also found a great color-match for WW in a *true* 80# cover weight is Beckett's 'Iceberg', BTW.
I love the VV and WW for stamping on and layering -- I just don't like it for cards themselves if I'm going to be doing any layering or embellishing. I also love the SU! colored stocks, and use them the most. Have to admit I find myself fondling the textured Bazzills and DCWVs more and more, though...
Don't get me started talking about paper!!
Happy trails....

These are starting to appear in more than just Paper-Source, some other stores like Impress and Paper Zone have picked them up as well. The shapes, colors and large wrapping sheets are to die for! It is their paper I used to cover the little gift/pin box in my gallery. LOVE their paper!!!
They didn't have a retail outlet when I lived in WI, Karen -- but that doesn't mean that they don't now! Definitely worth checking into -- let us know if you find one, OK?
Happy trails....

Either way, this is most interesting news to me, about this paper!!

What Geneal said. :-) Craft store cardstock is too flimsy IMO, and office store cardstock is limited to only white or cream, which I find can be distracting with a dark or rich-colored card fronts. I just like the design look of carrying the dominant card color through to the inside and back.

I use Neenah paper and envelopes and just love them! I love a heavy weight envelope for my cards, because I don't want the embellishments to tear the envelope. These are the best ever! I also purchase my confetti cardstock and paper from Fox River paper. The quality is terrific from these companies (equal to SU in my opinion) and the price is great too.
This past weekend I saw how Julie loves Fabriano Mediovalis Folded Reply Cards, and did a search online for their paper. I found a great deal at Jerry's Artarama....the folded cards (100 each) was on sale for $13.50 and their envelopes (100 each) on sale for $17.65. Shipping was $11.95, so the total was $43.10, but that seemed like a great deal for 100 cards and envelopes. I can't wait to get them!
